He drove out the Danes and styled himself
"King of the Anglo-Saxons" -- the first to do so.
Ridding the country of the scourge of the Danes,
his subsequent introduction of the shire system,
and improvements to the systems of laws and of finance,
laid the groundwork for his grandson ¤Ęthelstan to rule as the first King of a truely unified England.
He is the only English king awarded the epithet "The Great".
