Was variously an office boy, printer's devil, schoolteacher, typesetter and journalist.
He served as a hospital nurse during the Civil War [1862-1864],
which experience much affected him.
Published Leaves of Grass [1855], subsequently revised in many editions,
to unfavorable reviews.
Appreciation of his genius came slowly* — except in his own mind;
He knew he was a genius long before anyone else figured it out.

With Walt Whitman in Camden
IN 1888, HORACE L. TRAUBEL, a young political radical and aspiring writer in Camden, New Jersey, began systematically recording his daily conversations with his friend, Walt Whitman. He continued for four years, until Whitman's death in 1892, amassing a lovingly detailed record whose accuracy, fidelity, and immediacy remain unsurpassed in the history of biography. [archive]

* | It is really a myth that recognition came slowly. Early reviews were generally favorable. Walt himself perpetuated the idea of his struggle for recognition. |
