British colonial governor of Virginia;
great-grandson of Sir Thomas Wyatt (~1503-1542).
Named (1620) governor of Virginia by the Virginia Company at London,
he arrived (1621) at the colony and served in his post until the
Virginia Company was disolved (1624),
and subsequently served (1624-26) as the first royal governor of Virginia;
he occupied the post again from 1639-1641.
He is remembered as a defender of local priviliges and representative
government in Virginia. NCCN
