Note on Husband: Jacob ROBERTS

In 1781 Jacob's father died. The young Jacob was only 17 years old. In the January of that year Jacob's father had joined his brother Samuel in a new silver making firm called Roberts, Eyre, Beldon and Co. He made provision in his will for his wife and the young Jacob to take over his share of the partnership. Jacob must have joined the firm as in 1785, when he was twenty one, he travelled to Spain on their behalf. By this time his cousin Samuel had started on his own in Eyre Street, and the two exchanged correspondence. The letters are found in the Memorials book. In 1785 Jacob became a Freeman of the Cutler's Company.

When he came back from Spain, his Uncle Samuel, although noting that he was bound for six years with his then partners in Roberts, Eyre Beldon and Co, had split from them to carry on the Union Street business on his own, now with the help of Jacob. Edward Law in the Appendix to his "Sheffield Silversmiths" says "Some handles are recorded in March 1786 under the style of JACOB ROBERTS & CO, but there is no (silver) mark for such a firm.

However, in 1786, a silver mark was registered for Old Sheffield Plate under the name of "Roberts J&S".

In the Gales and Martin Directory of Sheffield - 1787, there is a reference to "Roberts, Jacob (cutlers) Residing in Union Street in 1787".

Frederick Bradbury, in his "History of Old Sheffiled Plate", records "Jacob and Samuel ... brought up, like most of the early platers, as Cutlers ..... built works at Union Street. Samuel lived in a house adjoining the shop. They made table knives, and later on expanded into merchants".

In 1793, Jacob married Mary Ann Morton. Her father was Richard Morton, a well established and successful silversmith. He is noted in business as a silversmith in 1768. He had been in partnership with Jacob's Uncle Samuel until 1780 with other partners in Richard Morton and Co who registered a mark "RM&Co".

Jacob appears on the 1794 Enrolment List of the Loyal Independent Sheffield Volunteers - "5 Jacob Roberts, Merchant, Union Street".

In 1799, Jacob's Uncle Samuel died, and Jacob continued the Union Street business until he died in 1820 at the age of 56.

Jacob had become Treasurer of the Sheffield Mercantile and Manufacturing Union - there is a note to confirm this in the first meeting of the General Committee on 28th March 1814 when Jacob was 50. There are also letters to him from his wife in 1814 and 1816.

He is buried in th family tomb in Ecclesall Churchyard "a flat top tomb at side of north path leading to side entrance". The inscription on the side of the tomb reads "Also in memory of Jacob Roberts who died June 23 1820 aged 56 years and of Mary Ann Roberts (his wife) who died 27th april 1849 aged 79 years".2,16,33,34,35,36

Note on Wife: Mary Ann MORTON

Mary's mother Elizabeth was the daughter of Isaac Nodder. There is a plaque in Sheffiled Cathedral where Isaac's other children are buried.

Mary is buried in the family tomb in the churchyard of All Saints, Ecclesall. The inscription on the side of the tomb reads " And of Mary Ann Roberts who died 27th April 1849 aged 79 years."16,37
