Note on Husband: Sidney ROBERTS

In Frederick Bradbury's "A History of Old Sheffield Plate", there is a reference to Sidney Roberts going into a ten year partnership in 1826 with Samuel Roberts, Evan Smith and William Sissons in a firm called Roberts, Smith & Co. Samuel Roberts (of Park Grange 1763-1848) was helped by his father (Samuel Roberts of Union Street 1732-1799) to start a new business in Eyre Street in 1784. This was a partnership with George Cadman called Roberts and Cadman, then with new capital, Roberts, Cadman & Co started in 1786 in a partnership for 14 years. In 1798 Samuel Roberts and George Cadman entered into another partnership for a further 14 years and this was renewed in 1812 for a similar period, expiring in 1826. This business in Sheffield Plate flourished. Sidney Roberts, Evan Smith and William Sissons all trained at the works in Eyre Street and were taken into partnership as described above.Sidney was 22 years old. Samuel was by this time 63 years old.

Sidney's father, Jacob, was running the Union Street Business( for his Uncle Samuel) until he died in 1820 when Sidney was only 16. So there was a distinct family connection and this helped Sidney find a place to train and eventually to become a partner.

In 1834, Samuel Roberts retired. His son Samuel continued the business in Eyre Street with Smith and Sissons in a new partneship called S Roberts, Smith & Co. But there is no evidence of Sidney. By this time he was 30 years old. In 1841, at the age of 35, the Census records he is living off "Independent" means at Hanover street, Ecclesall. The family have one servant. The next we know is in 1845 when he is 40 and living at Dial House, Wadsley. He is listed as a "Gentleman", so he may well have retired very early on the proceeds of the partnership?

Sidney is buried in the family tomb at All Saints, Ecclesall. The inscription on the top reads "In memory of Sidney son of Jacob and Mary an Roberts who died February 12th 1859 aged 54 yers".16,36,37

Note on Wife: Sarah SHEARWOOD

Sarah is buried alongside her husband in the family tomb at All Saints, Ecclesall. The inscription on the top reads "Also of Sarah the wife of Sidney Roberts who died November 19th 1880 aged 80 years".16
