Note on Husband: Jacob ROBERTS

Jacob was an apprentice cutler (apprenticed to William Warburton) in 1709. The Master was William Warberton of Neepsend. Jacob became a Freeman of the Cutler's Company in 1718.

The Memorials book describes that "After (his marriage to Mary Hoyland in Sheffield) the place of his residence is not known, but his conduct is said to have become irregular".

"The weaving trade did not prosper away from the gloomy centres of Huddersfield and Bradford. Bit by bit and house by house, Jacob sold off the Roberts property as it came into his hands; (the Memorials book has details) until about 1723 after his elder brother's death, Jacob seems to have given up the struggle and and moved into Sheffield, taking his mother with him". It was not long before he " decided to leave his home and family behind. It is said that he looked for a new life in London. Despite the fact that his wife (Mary) tried to follow him, he was never heard of again".

In "Mesters to Masters: A History of The Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire" edited by Clive Binfield and David Hey, there is a reference on page 33 that "....... Jacob Roberts, who had become a master (cutler) in 1718".13,25,26

Note on Wife: Mary HOYLAND

Buried in the old churchyard, Sheffield, a short distance from the South west corner of the church, under a stone including the inscription "Mary, wife of Jacob Roberts, died March 19 1770 aged 70 years".

"doubtless one of the persons whose baptisms are recorded in the followong entries under that name and township in the Sheffield parish register:

1701, Maria, fil, Thomas Hoyland

1703, Maria, fil, John Hoyland"

Before marriage, a "spinster, of Lydgate, upper Hallam".

Possibly one of the Hoylands, silversmiths.27
