Note on Husband: William BOYD

William was born in the parish district of Stichill and Hume, two villages close to each other.

He and Anne had nine children.

Brian Boyd describes how "In 1810, (when he was 30) William and his brother George moved to England and set up a Millwright business over North Bridge in Hull. Maybe because the rural economic situation in Scotland was not good at that time and Hull was becoming an expanding industrail and shipping centre. Maybe this is where William met Anne King, as she was born in this area. In 1810, the brothers would have been in their 30's so it is probable that they learnt their trade in Scotland.

The brothers also made and fixed thrashing and corn machinery "upon the latest approved plan and at moderate expense". They built many windmills in Yorkshire (and possibly Lincolnshire) area for the grinding of grain into flouretc. One such mill was half a mile S.W. of St Patrick's Church, at Patringham Haven in East Yorkshire. It was an eight storied brick mill built for the production of animal feed. It was renovated in 1928. The site of the mill was in flat low-lying, river silt country at the mouth of the Humber River. It appeared to be ideal for growing grain and also open to the coastal sea breezes needed to turn the sails on the mill."

Brian Boyd continues "My wife and I visited the mill site in June 1999. Over the years the planting of a lot more trees and hedges had changed the appearance of the surrounding countryside. The top of the Mill had been removed long ago, leaving the bottom four stories which had been roofed over for use as a storage building. There are many mill-stones on the site, and above the door of the nearby mill house is a stone plaque from the mill which says "Built by William and George Boyd etc".

Most of the mill sites in Yorkshire are identified (mainly coastal) on historical maps but I have not done any further research on these."
