County Employee Struck Working As Signalman On Construction Gang

Tillman E. McKINNEY, 70 year old county employee from Owens Cross Roads, was killed instantly yesterday afternoon when he was struck by a passing motorist while working with a construction gang on the Whitesburg Bridge – Buggs Chapel Road.

The force of the impact hurled the old man into air, and he landed across the hood of a car driven by T. L. STEWART, steel worker from Gadsden.  At the time of the accident, Mr. McKinney was acting as a signalman, directing traffic around black-top paving now in progress on the river road.

He had no signal flag in his hand when hit and investigating highway patrolmen said the only item he carried was a pick handle.  One of the onlookers to the fatal accident was a son, Howard McKINNEY, third district road foreman.

Varying accounts of the accident were given to highway patrolmen by occupants in Stewart's car and members of the road crew.  McKinney crossed the road from behind a parked truck.  County employees stated he was in the road and waving the car off just prior to the collision.

Investigating patrolmen planned to talk to Howard McKINNEY, the traffic victim's son, today in an effort to learn further details about the fatality.  They reported Stewart's speed at the time of the accident as ranging between 40 and 50 miles per hour.  The accident occurred about 3:45 o'clock yesterday afternoon one mile east of the Whitesburg Bridge.

The county employee, who was killed instantly, suffered two broken legs, several internal injuries and other broken bones.  Stewart was taken before Solicitor James D. SMITH by highway patrolmen.  It was indicated no charges would be preferred by the state or patrol because of the fatality.

Funeral services were held at 4 o'clock this afternoon from Owens Cross Roads Methodist Church with the Rev. J. W. PEYTON officiating.  Burial will follow at the nearby Moon's Cemetery with the Laughlin-Service Funeral Home in charge.

Pallbearers were Moody ELLETT, Robert BAKER, Bill DENNIS, Allen MAPLES, Jesse WALLS and Wiley WILLIAMS.

Honorary pallbearers were A. H. ELLETT, R. W. WALLS, Dr. James L. CARPENTER, Bud MAPLES, L. A. CHANDLER and J. W. PATTERSON.

Mr. McKinney is survived by his widow, Mrs. Adelaide McKINNEY; two sons, Howard McKINNEY and William E. McKINNEY, both of Owens Cross Roads; two daughters, Mrs. Connie TABOR and Mrs. Margaret McKINNEY, Owens Cross Roads; three brothers, Newton McKINNEY of Tuscumbia, W. R. McKINNEY and T. R. McKINNEY of Gurley; and two sisters, Mrs. Mattie SMITH, Gurley and Mrs. Annie INMAN, Little Rock, Arkansas.
