John G. Butler

 

NEW HOPE – Longtime Madison County Board of Education member John G. BUTLER died Friday at his Pine Street home here from an apparent heart attack.

 

He was 61.  A native of New Hope, Butler graduated from New Hope High School and attended the University of Alabama.  He served as vice president of Colonial Bank.  He was also the former manager of the New Hope Branch of Central Bank of the South.

 

Butler, a Navy veteran, was the current president of the New Hope Telephone Cooperative and had been a member of that board since it was formed in the early 1950s.  He had served on the county school board since 1966 as a member, vice president and president.  He was also serving as District 9 Director of the Alabama School Board Association.

 

Other involvements include: Elder of the Owens Cross Roads Church of Christ, member of the New Hope Medical Board and New Hope Lions Club, Director of North Alabama College of Commerce and served on the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

 

The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Owens Cross Roads Church of Christ with Stan STEVENSON officiating.

 

Burial will be in Moon Cemetery with New Hope Funeral Home in charge.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Madison Academy School.

 

Survivors include his wife, Jo Ann Tabor BUTLER; two daughters, Laura Butler CONWELL of New Hope and Henri McDANIEL of Huntsville; a son, John G. BUTLER Jr. of New Hope; two brothers, Albert H. BUTLER Jr. and Thomas E. BUTLER Sr., both of New Hope; four sisters, Dorothy Sue BELL and Laura Jane MANN, both of New Hope, Martha ADAMS of Niceville, Fla., and Lois CROSS of Columbus, Miss.; and five grandchildren.

 

Visitation will be today from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
