Maternal Line of Robin Pyatt Bellamy

Elijah James Russell [Parents] was born on 15 Feb 1832 in Annapolis, Ann Arundel co., Maryland. He died on 4 Oct 1872 in Annapolis, Ann Arundel Co., Maryland. He was buried on 6 Oct 1872 in (Annapolis, Ann Arundel co.) Md.. He was baptized on 28 May 1996 in Seatt. He was endowed on 1 Jun 1996 in the Seattle Washington temple. He married Caroline Brown on 4 Aug 1858 in Baltimore, Baltimore Co., Maryland. They were sealed on 5 Jun 1996 in the Seattle Washington temple.

Elijah sometimes went by the name "James", which we will use below.

In the 1850 census of Baltimore, there is a 29 year old "mariner" namedJames Russell, born in Pennsylvania. This could be our Elijah James, although this James is about 10 years older than what we believe ours tobe, by our estimating his year of birth from the 1860 & 1870 census andhis Military Service Record. Remember, many mistakes were recorded inthe census. Maybe the above 29 year old was really 19, which would fitin with our James (sometimes it's hard to read the census taker'swriting).

Wm. E. Rohr also has a copy of page 54 of FHC film #013,199, which is the1850 census of the 4th. Ward of Baltimore, which has a 38 year old "SeaCaptain" George W. Russell (MD. born), his 37 year old wife, and theirchildren listed on it. This couple is old enough to be James' parents.

Wm. E. Rohr has several 1850 Pennsylvania census records with a JamesRussell listed in them also (one with a possible E.J. Russell in it), anyof which could be our James. Have followed each of these families to seeif they moved to the Baltimore or Annapolis area, with a negative results.

In 1860, Elijah James, Caroline, & their first son (John), were allliving in the 3rd. Ward of Baltimore city with Elijah's in-laws, John &Phebe Brown (John Brown was listed as a 50 year old "Mariner"). Theywere living at 2 S. Central Ave. per the 1860 Baltimore city directory.Elijah was a "mariner" at this time. Note: there was a 42 year old HenryRussell & family living 23 homes away, at the time, as well as livingnext door to Henry Furlong (the minister that married Elijah James &Caroline). They may have been related to Elijah James. Wm. E. Rohr hasa copy of each of these census records.

Per a biography on Allen T. Russell Sr., "the father of Elijah Jamesserved in the War of 1812, and members of the family were numbered amongthe heroes of the Revolution. As soon as the first call for volunteerscame for the defense of the union, Elijah James entered the service as amember of the 1st Maryland Infantry. Some of his brothers enlisted atthe same time in the First Maryland Confederate Infantry, and the tworegiments were engaged in battle at Washington."

In Wm. E. Rohr's researching for any of Elijah James Russell's brothers, from Maryland, that fought with the Confederate Army in the Civil War, aswas noted on the biography of Allen T. Russell Sr., William found onlythese two individuals. Information came from FHC film #1,292,678.
Russell, Elisha T. (2nd.) Company "H", 1st. Md. Infantry (Confederate)
Enlisted June 19, 1861 in Richmond for one year
Discharged June 18, 1862 (Private)
Russell, Thomas A. company "H", 1st. Md. Infantry (Confederate)
Enlisted June 19, 1961 in Richmond for one year
Discharged June 18, 1962

These two Russells very well could be brothers to each other, in view ofthe fact of their enlistment dates and place. But, Wm. E. Rohr has notbeen able to locate either of them in the area of either Elijah James, orCaroline, Russell, before or after the Civil War, therefore not beingable to connect them to our Elijah James. Were both of these Russells inthe Confederate Army killed? They could still be brothers to Elijah. We're still searching.

Also, in searching for any possible connection of a Russell from eitherPennsylvania or Maryland, to the Revolutionary War, Wm. E. Rohr found thefollowing on Family Tree maker CD #208, "MD. Gen. Soc. Bulletin, Vol.1-38, Vol. 6, No. 4, November 1965, Revolutionary Obituaries."
Russell, Paul: d. at Philadelphia (PA.), 8 (July), a Rev. soldier, age93. He fought under General Wayne. (SUN, 17 July 1843)
Russell, Thomas: d. at Littleton, Mass., an officer in the Revolution, aged 87.
(SUN, 6 Aug. 1841)
These last two Russells (Paul and Thomas) could be connected to ourRussell.

THE FOLLOWING CAME FROM JAMES' CIVIL WAR MILITARY PENSION AND SERVICERECORDS

*** James enlisted in Company "A", 1st. Regiment Maryland InfantryVolunteers on August 12, 1862 as a Private for 3 years. His "muster in"date was August 21, 1862 at Baltimore, MD. His service record statesthat he was 31 years old then (making his DOB about 1831).

*** James was "detached as Brigade Teamster" sometime about September orOctober of 1862 per his service record. He was still a "BrigadeTeamster" in November and December of that same year.

*** However, he was "absent without leave" from January 24 to February 4,1863, also per his service record. (Note: it is wondered by thisresearcher if this was when one of his children was born, that laterdied; or one of his children died during this time. Check the notes forhis wife for "mother of 4 children, only 3 living" in the 1900 and 1910census of Baltimore. Note that there was a 6 year 8 month gap betweenJames' first child and his second child, three years of this time withJames being in the service).

*** On James' "Company Muster Roll" for March & April 1864, he was on"detached service" (special assignment?). This may have been inconjunction with the furloughs mentioned in the military history of theunit, James being part of the replacements.

*** On May 25, 1864 Elijah James was promoted to corporal.

*** Then, on October 1, 1864, Elijah James was promoted again. This timehe was made Sargeant. He was his company's "4th. Sargeant" upon gettingthis promotion.

** * Elijah James Russell was wounded on February 6, 1865 at the battleat Dadney's Mill, VA.

*** Other Civil War battles that Elijah James Russell fought in were:
Maryland Heights (July 7, 1863) ColdHarbor, Va . (Jun 2-5, 1864)
Funkstown, MD. (July 12, 1863)Assault on Petersburg, Va.(Jun 17-18, 1864)
Haymarket, VA. (Oct. 19, 1863)Siege of Petersburg, Va. (1864-65)
Wilderness, VA. (May 5-7, 1864)Welton Railroad, Va . (Aug 18-21, 1864)
Laurel Hill, VA. (May 8, 1864)Poplar Grove Church, VA. (Sep 30, 1864)
Spottsylvania Court House, VA. (May 9-20, 1864) Chapel House,Va. ( Oct 1-3, 1864)
Harris' Farm, Va. (May 19, 1864)Peebles' Farm (Oct 7-8, 1864)
North Anna, VA. (May 30, 1864)Hatcher's Run, VA . (Oct 27, 1864)
Shady Grove, Va. (May 30, 1864)Hicksford, Va . (Dec 7-12, 1864)
Bethesda Church, Va. (May 31 & Jun 1, 1864) Dadney's Mill,VA . (Feb. 6, 1865)

*** As per the Company Muster Rolls, James was "absent sick" after hisbeing wounded on February 6, 1865. He was mustered out at ArlingtonHeights, VA. per the "Detachment Muster-out Roll dated June 3rd, 1865.This also states that he was "absent sick in hospital at Annapolis, MD. "and says he was 35 years old then. His "Company Muster-out Roll" isdated July 3, 1865 and says he was 25 years old (this is an error). His"Individual Muster-out Roll" shows his age as 31 years (this age is alsowrong) as of July 17, 1865. He was given an Honorable Discharge in1865. At his discharge he had chronic diarrhea, hemorrhoids, lungdisease (consumption). He suffered from these until his death. His son,Elijah J. Russell M.D., may have been his attending physician. James wasdischarged on July 2, 1865. His unit was in the Union Army. (Wm. Rohrhas copies of his service & pension file records.)

THIS END JAMES' CIVIL WAR MILITARYHISTORY

In the 1870 census for Annapolis, MD. there were several Russell familiesin the area of James' family (head of households were Charles & Joseph). These Russells' may be brothers to James. Wm. E. Rohr has a copy of thiscensus with the Charles Russell family on it (they were on page 721;Charles was a "grocery merchant").

Also in 1870, found a 46 year old Maryland born "sailor", Jesse Russell, lived 2 house away from the household where James lived (listed as Elijahon this 1870 census). This Jesse Russell had a worth of $1400 of realestate and $1500 of real property in 1870. This same Jesse Russell waslisted in the 1860 census of Annapolis as a 36 year old "sailor" and hadhis 30 year old wife, Mary, and two daughters, 4 year old Mary E. and 2year old ???, living with him (in dwelling #354 on page 47 of Nat. Arch.film #M653-457). It is wondered if he could be related to our ElijahJames, and be the main financial backer of some fishing venture (and orboat) that involved our Russells, and some of the connecting Browns.Twelve years before, Elijah & Caroline were living in Baltimore, wherethey were married. Caroline's parents, John & Pheobe Brown, were listedas the "head of household" in the 1860 census of Baltimore, with Elijah &Caroline living with them then. Ten years before that, in the 1850census, the entire Brown household, including 13 year. old Caroline, wereliving in Baltimore. Something drew Elijah James Russell to Annapolis, from Baltimore, as well as several of the Brown family. Could it be forthe above possible connection, or was there a longing to be with some ofhis Civil War buddies; such as those mentioned below.

Besides family members, James knew a Louis A. Brewer (a drummer in Co. B,same regiment as James, and Louis knew James at the time they servedtogether in the Civil War), a Enos Brewer (brother to Louis), and JosephD. Parkinson, all of who knew James and they all (Enos, Lewis, & Joseph)were from Annapolis, MD.

SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT THE ABOVE INDIVIDUALS: in the 1850 census ofAnnapolis, Md., found Enoch Brewer (9 years old) and Lewis A. Brewer (6years old), brothers, with their parents, on page 286, dwelling #338.Found two Joseph Parkinson's on the same film as above (FHC film#0013195); one Joseph was black, 23 years old, listed on page 285,dwelling #325; the other Joseph was a 23 year old carpenter listed onpage 290, dwelling #410.

Found both of the Brewer brothers, Enos & Lewis, in the 1870 census, still living in Annapolis (they returned to their same home area afterservice in the Civil War). They were both married and had children.Coincidentally, they were living very close to Elijah James & Caroline(Brewer brothers are on page 715 and Russells were on page 719 of FHCfilm #552,067). Enos was a "bricklayer", while his brother, Lewis, was a"fisherman", just like James. Did James and Lewis work together asfishermen? Let it be noted that in 1870, in this area of Annapolis, Md.where these families lived, it was populated with several otherhouseholds with either "sailors" or "fishermen" living in them.

In 1880, 35 year old Lewis A. Brewer, still in the crabbing business, wasstill married and living in Annapolis, MD.

In the 1880 census of Annapolis (FHC film #1,254.494; ED #27, sheet #17,line 21) found the above mentioned Joseph Parkinson (white male) as a 53year. old "carpenter" living at 34 King George Street, Annapolis,Maryland, with his wife and children. One of their younger children wasnamed "James". Could this child's name be because of the friendship hisfather had with our James, especially during their service together inthe Civil War? Could this Joseph Parkinson be the former husband to MaryBrown (mentioned below), and the father to Jemmie Parkinson? There wereseveral other Parkinson families in the area, them being in the "oyster &crabbing business".

In 1880, in Annapolis, the above mentioned Jesse Russell was in the"Oyster Business" and living next door to a 53 year old Josiah Russellfamily. Next door to them was the Joseph & Mary Brown family, Josephbeing in the "Oyster & crabbing Business". Living with Joseph Brown wasa 21 year old stepdaughter, Jemmie Parkinson.

Per his pension file, James, Caroline and their children, werechristened. It also states that there is a record of Elijah James'birth. Don't know if it would be church record (First MethodistEpiscopal Church of Baltimore maybe) or civil records.

Per a 1910 and 1920 census record involving his son, Elijah Joseph,Elijah James was born in New Jersey, instead of Pennsylvania, as othercensus indicate.

Also found mention as "Holder of Deed" to a Burial Ground Deed 1810 -1858, for the Southern Burial Grounds for the Methodist Church known asBaltimore City Station, a James Russell. Date of purchase was July 2,1832 (this may not have any connection to our Elijah James).

Family Finder says he is located on World Family Tree Volume 10.

On WFT cd #178 (Church Records: MD. &DE. 1600-1800's) found a JamesRussell married to Rebecca N. Russell on Oct 3, 1833 in that part on theM.E. Church Records of Baltimore City, Maryland (This is not our ElijahJames but it may have some connection; ie. father, brother??).

BIOGRAPHY: Per the "Maryland Republican", April 22, 1871, Elijah JamesRussell appointed Chief of police after serving many years as an officer.

MARYLAND STATE ARCHIVES: 410-260-6429 Tue - Sat. 8:00 - 5:00PM EST. Wm.E. Rohr has the MD. State Archives do a search for a death record ofElijah in the 15 year period (1865-1880) that they have on file. NAT.ARCHIVES:1-800-234-8861. They came up with the following newspaperarticle:

DEATH: Obituary from Annapolis Gazette, Tuesday Morning, October 8, 1872reads as follows:
"Death of a Police Officer": It is our painful duty to record the deathof Mr. Elijah J. Russell, Chief of Police of this city, who died onFriday night last, after a lingering illness. Mr. Russell was one of themost respected citizens, and leaves a large circle of friends andrelatives to mourn his death. He was a good officer, always faithful inthe discharge of his duties, and ever kind and considerate when leniencywould subserve peace and good order better than sternness and severity. He leaves a wife and several small children, who have lost the onlyresource upon which they relied for support and protection. His funeraltook place on Sunday afternoon, attended by the Mayor and City Council,Annapolis Division Sons of Temperance No. 10, Severn Lodge No. 22,I.O.M., and a very large concourse of citizens. (Note: Believe I.O.M.stands for "Independent Order of Mechanics", which was started in 1868 inBaltimore.)

NOTE: in this same paper there was mention of "The second quarterlyconvention of the Sabbath School of Severn circuit of the M.E. Church, will be held at Mt. Hope Chapel, ----." The M.E. Church (of Baltimore)is the church that the minster that married Elijah and Caroline togetherbelonged to. Maybe they were members of this branch in Severn (which isclose to Annapolis).

DEATH: Obituary of Elijah James Russell in Maryland Republican of October12, 1872: "Died of pneumonia after being kicked in the chest by a drunk, while attempting to arrest him for disorderly conduct. Survived by a wifeand several small children."

He was buried on October 6, 1872, probably somewhere in Annapolis,Maryland.

Had his DOB as "abt. 1831" once, as well as PA. as birth place. Seesource.

Caroline Brown [Parents] was born on 22 Mar 1837 in Baltimore, Baltimore Co, Maryland. She died on 7 Aug 1914 in Baltimore, Baltimore Co., Maryland. She was buried on 9 Aug 1914 in Annapolis, Anne Arundel Co., Md.. She was sealed to her parents on 4 Sep 1996 in the Seattle Washington temple. She was baptized on 28 May 1996 in Seatt. She was endowed on 22 Jun 1996 in the Seattle Washington temple. She married Elijah James Russell on 4 Aug 1858 in Baltimore, Baltimore Co., Maryland. They were sealed on 5 Jun 1996 in the Seattle Washington temple.

Caroline's marriage date, as well as her father's name, came from booktitled "Index To Marriages In The (Baltimore) Sun 1851-1860". Thearticle was published on page 2 of The Sun on August 14, 1858, statingshe was "daughter of John".

Caroline's year of birth came from 1850 census of Baltimore (city -- 4thward). The exact DOB came from Kathy Prosser to Wm. E. Rohr. Kathy'ssources are unknown.

In 1880 Caroline was a "boarder" and widow, living with her sister, AmyLove, at 60 North Carey St. in Baltimore, Maryland. Caroline's 12 yearold son, Allen T., was living with her there. Don't know where her othertwo sons were. They could have been living together somewhere in thearea.

In the 1900 census of Baltimore city, she was still enumerated with herbrother-in-law, John A. Love, & sister, Amy. They lived on N. CarneySt. in 1900 (maybe 317 N. Carey St.).

She continued to live with her sister's family through the 1910 census. As per the 1910 census, Caroline had 4 children, but only 3 were livingin 1910 (Don't have any record of this 4th. child, so far). Her sisterwas still alive in 1920, but Caroline was not with her; she had died bythat time (census was taken January 7 & 8th, 1920).

Wm. Rohr has on file the 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, and the 1910census records showing Caroline in them (look under Brown, Russell orLove in that order). The 1850 and 1860 census show her mother being bornin Connecticut. All others show both her parents were born in Maryland.

Besides family members, she knew a Louis A. Brewer. He was a drummer inCo. B, the same regiment as Elijah James and he knew Elijah at the time.Caroline also knew Enos Brewer and Joseph D. Parkinson, all of who knewElijah, and they all were from Annapolis, MD.

SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT THE ABOVE INDIVIDUALS: in the 1850 census ofAnnapolis, Md., found Enoch Brewer (9 years old) and Lewis A. Brewer (6years old), who were brothers, with their parents, on page 286, dwelling#338. Found two Joseph Parkinson's on the same film as above (FHC film#0013195); one Joseph was black, 23 years old, listed on page 285,dwelling #325; the other Joseph was a 23 year old carpenter listed onpage 290, dwelling #410. SEE NOTES ABOUT THEM IN 1870 ANNAPOLIS, WITHNOTES ON ELIJAH JAMES RUSSELL. NEED TO FIND THEM IN 1880. MAYBECAROLINE'S TWO OLDEST SONS ARE WITH THEM THEN. ALSO, CHECK THE BROWNHOUSEHOLDS IN THE SAME AREA.

Caroline's death date came from pension files of her husband. She livedat 421 N. Carrolton Ave., Baltimore in 1890. She died of "arteriosclerosis and lung congestion". Her son, Elijah J. Russell, M.D., washer attending physician, along with John W. Chambers. Her sickness began4 years before her death, and she did require daily attendance for thelast three weeks of her life.

She was living with her son, Dr. Elijah J. Russell, at his home at 423 N.Broadway, Baltimore, at the time of her death. The attending undertaker& livery person was Albert E. Fuller Jr . and the burial person (?) forthe cemetery was W. H. Fillmeyer. Her being buried in Annapolis, versesthe expense of the "livery" (transportation of body?) after her death, may indicate that she wanted to be buried with her husband. If aconnection of either Mr. Fuller or Mr. Fillmeyer can be made to anycemetery in Annapolis, Md., that might be where Caroline and Elijah areburied. NEED TO CHECK THIS OUT. She may be buried in a Brown familyplot there.

Per her death certificate, #C77735, which Wm. E. Rohr has a copy of, theundertaker, Albert E . Fuller, used an address of 221 N. Broadway. Thisis also the source of her mother's maiden name, Caroline's DOB, deathdate, and places of each of these.

Per her husband's pension file, she was insured by Metropolitan LifeInsurance Co. Their son, Elijah, paid the premiums of 15 cents a week. The policy paid $81 upon her death, to him.

On the FTM cd #178 (Church Records: MD. & DE. 1600-1800's) found a"Caroline Brown, receive with certificate, April 24, 1834" mentioned inthat part for the M.E. Church Records of Baltimore City, Md.

Melancthon Ferry [Parents] was born in May 1819 in White Hall, Washington Co., New York. He died on 13 Aug 1888 in Naperville, Du Page Co., Illinois. He was buried in 1888 in Spring Lake Cemetery, Aurora, Du Page co., Il.. He was sealed to his parents in the Manti Utah temple. He was baptized on 2 Jul 1958. AREA HISTORY: Naperville was in the heart of the Illinois frontier, thefirst settlers having come there in 1831. In the early 1850's, most ofthe Naperville streets were furnished with planked walks. More thanlikely, Melancthon took part in the first election ever held inNaperville, which was on May 4, 1857. In the first history of Du Pagecounty, published in 1857, Naperville was described as follows: "It(Naperville) has upwards of 2,000 inhabitants, 2 hotels, 12 stores, 6churches, 1 bakery, 1 bank, 2 Post Offices, 1 grist mill, 10manufacturers, 1 saw mill, 2 breweries, 1 tin & stove warehouse, 1printing office, 2 quarries, 2 extensive lumber yards, 2 nurseries, manylibraries (9), and 1 incorporated academy. It was the county seat from1839 until 1880."

BIOGRAPHY: Later, Melancthon bought land to farm for $1.25 an acre fromthe government. This land is located just east of the Ferry road on theC.A. & E. Electric Railroad. Later he bought other land, a few acres ata time. In 1853 or 1854 he bought a part of the present (1927) Ferryfarm, the price ranging from $12.50 to $25 an acre. He built the mainpart of the present (1927) house and moved into it in 1854. It isinteresting to note that Mr. William Simpson was the carpenter who builtthe house & later became his son-in-law. He (Melancthon) split rails &made fence for part of the farm and set out hedge, which surrounded otherparts.

BIOGRAPHY: Melancthon was married to Maryette Woodman about 1845; had 6children, 3 of whom grew to maturity and married: Delia married WilliamSimpson -- had 3 children.
Ira married Sarah Briggs -- had 6 children; 4 ofwhom are now living (1927).
Etta married George Simpson -- had 2 children.

BIOGRAPHY: After the death of Maryette, Melancthon married Nellie EllenSeldon -- had 2 children:
Minnie Grace married Allen Travers Russell
Charles

BIOGRAPHY: His son Ira stayed on the farm and married in 1870. Ira diedin 1887, just 40 years ago (1927), leaving 6 children. His (Ira's)oldest son, George, was married in 1895 and is still living on the oldhome place with his family (1927).

BIOGRAPHY: Three generations have been born and raised on this farm.

The above comments came from hand written notes that were handed out atthe Ferry family re-union on the Ferry farm on June 18, 1927.

More comments from these re-union notes are with the data on his fatherand his brother.

BIOGRAPHY: Another history source (The Warrenville Heritage Cookbook, page 6) stated the following about the Ferry farm: "The farm was operatedby Melancthon, his son James Ira (Elmer's grandfather), George W. Ferry(Elmer's father), Elmer's brother Lorin, and by Elmer (Ferry), up until1971. It was also the childhood home of Lillis (Ferry) Hoover and Viola(Ferry) Avery."

BIOGRAPHY: Melancthon shows up in the 1850 census of the town ofNaperville, dated Aug. 28th. (see FHC film #007,678, page 22), beinglisted as 31 year old N.Y. born "farmer", with $1800 worth of realestate. Living with him are his wife, 23 yr old N.H. born, Maritta C., 4yr old daughter Adelia E., and 2 yr old son James I., both born in IL.At this time, the area of Naperville Township was made up of 459 homes,and/or farms.

BIOGRAPHY: By 1860, the rural area of Naperville was made up of 190homes, or farms, while the incorporated City of Naperville was made up ofan additional 230 residences, per the census. Melancthon shows up atthis time (June 1, 1860, FHC film #803,175, page 1)) in Naperville as a41 year old N.Y. born farmer with $9800 worth of real estate and $1800worth of personal property. Living with him are, his 33 yr old N.H. bornwife, Marriett C., 14 yr old Cordelia A. (daughter), 12 yr old Ira J.(son), 10 yr old Melinda V. (daughter), 8 yr old George S. (son), allborn in IL. Melancthon and Marriett also had a 30 yr old Germany bornIsreal Lint (laborer) and 20 yr old IL. born Margaret Maxwell (schoolteacher). Margaret could have been schooling Melancthon's children.

BIOGRAPHY: Melancthon Ferry shows up in the 1870 census (dated July11th.) as a 51 yr old N.Y. born farmer, with his second wife, 27 yr oldOhio born Sarah, living in the 7th Ward of Aurora, Kane county, IL. (seeFHC film #545, 735, page 96). There were no children living with themthen. Sarah would only live about two more years. At the same time(1870), four houses away, lived Melancthon's future in-laws, Calvin &Mary Selden (see notes with Nellie Seldon), parents of Melancthon's thirdwife, Nellie. However, Nellie Seldon was living in Little Rock township,Kindall county, IL. in the household of a minster from N.Y., Mr. CharlesHobbard.

BIOGRAPHY: Per the probate records of Du Page county, Melancthon ownedland in sections 3 & 4 of Naperville Township in 1862. In 1874, perthese probate records, he owned land in sections 3 & 5 in NapervilleTownship.

BIOGRAPHY: Per the "1874 Du Page County, IL. Atlas and Land OwnershipMaps" that Wm. E. Rohr acquired via the Internet, it appears thatMelancthon owned about 22-23 acres of farmland, in 1874, in section 6just west of what is now the intersection of the Diehl Rd. and the EolaRd., just off of I-88 and just north of Eola, IL. (this Eola was markedon the 1874 map as "Eola P.O.", which at that time was located on LundSt., across from a cheese factory). This was a few blocks north of hisbrother's farm, Joseph Ferry, which was in section 30. This 22 acres mayhave been another track of acreage he owned, in addition to a farm inAurora, IL., if he did indeed own a farm in Aurora.

Note: At this time (July 2001), we're not sure if the Ferry farm, mentioned in the notes from the Ferry Reunion, was in Du Page county orin Kane county, because of the above and below paragraphs. We think itwas in Du Page county because there is now a "Ferry Road" in the samearea of the above mentioned farm and we're thinking it was named afterSylvanius Ferry.

BIOGRAPHY: Some data came from the 1880 census & soundex. In the 1880census of Aurora, Kane county, IL. (FHC film #1,254,217; Ed #74, sheet 1,line 1), dated June 1, 1880, Melancthon was 61 yrs old N.Y. born andlisted as a "Retired Farmer". It further shows his father's birth placeas Mass., and his mother's as N.Y. Besides Melancthon, his 38 year oldVermont born wife, Ellen (may be Nellie's middle name), daughter MinnieG. (4 yrs old) and son, Charles M. (one yr old), and a 15 yr old femaleservant, Mary Welter, all three being born in Illinois, were living withMelancthon in the 1880 census.

Big Woods Road was renamed Ferry Road, when the C. A. & E. Railroad wasbuilt in the 1900's. (Roads in those days were named generally for thefarms they passed through. Examples: Ferry, Diehl, Williams andWiesbrook, just to name a few.)

Temple ordinances completed again in the Seattle Temple on below dates:
Bap: 21 Feb 1995
End: 15 Sep 1995
SP: 4 Oct 1995
SS: 4 Oct 1995

BIOGRAPHY: Melancthon's other marriages: Sarah Ford on 22 Jun 1862
Nellie Ellen Seldon(maybe about 1875)

AREA HISTORY: No doubt our Ferry ancestors were an important part of thegrowth of the Naperville area. Naperville was formally organized in 1850with a population of 1,628 people. In 1855 there were 2,055inhabitants. The Ferry families were there when the whole area wasgrowing very much. They were living in Naperville when they had a majorflood of the Du Page river in the spring of 1857, which destroyed severalbuildings in town, including three stores. This happened in March whenthe river, swollen by the heavy rains and melting snow, overflowed itsbanks and inundated all the business portion of town. Soon after thestream commenced rising, the mill-dam gave way and let down upon the townan avalanche of water, bearing upon its swift current large sheets ofice, which demolished everything in its way. That following winter(1857), Naperville was incorporated.

FAMILY HISTORY: An excerpt from information given to Wm. E. Rohr in Jan.2002 by Elaine Ferry reads:
"The Ferry family members were always active in community activitiesand have been life long members of Big Woods Congregational Church, alsoholding offices in the church.
In early 1962, the Northern Illinois Gas Co. bought the land south ofthe Ferry Road (meaning the Ferry Farm), which they widened and blacktopped, and erected their offices and laboratories.
In 1971 the remaining portion of the farm, including the home site, was resold (at the Ferry Farm Homestead Auction on June 26, 1971) toContinental Can Co. for their commercial usage, but was never occupieduntil now. Early in 1982 it was resold again, to Illinois Bell, and itis to be used for research by them. To date no building or developmenthas been made. Now 1998 - Land has been resold and is now underdevelopment but who now owns, or is developing, no details available."

It was also noted, as of December 2001, that "The land has been farmed byone of the last farmers in this area, Ronald Frieders, up until the late1980's, when now it is all leveled and being re-developed with warehousesand more commercial use."

DEATH & BURIAL: Once had his death date as Aug. 18th, 1888 (one sourcewas from "Early History of Melancthon Ferry Family"). The Spring LakeCemetery record shows him being 68 years old when he died in 1888.

Nellie Ellen Seldon was born in Apr 1843 in Vermont. She died on 5 Aug 1913 in (Naperville, DuPage co., Il.). She was buried in 1913 in Spring Lake Cemetery, Aurora, DuPage co., Il.. She was baptized in 1995 in Seatt. She was endowed in 1995 in the Seattle Washington temple. She married Melancthon Ferry on 11 Mar 1874 in , Kane co., Il.. They were sealed on 4 Oct 1995 in the Seattle Washington temple.

Some info on her came from the 1860 census of Aurora, IL.

Wm. E. Rohr found a 52 yr old N.Y. born farmer, Calvin Sheldon (Note thespelling but continue reading on), married to a 52 yr old N.Y. born Mary, with two N.Y. born daughters; 21 yr old Emily and 18 yr old Ellen. Allwere living in the Sandford area of Broome county, N.Y. in 1860 (see FHCfilm #803,724, page 855). There was also a 19 yr old N.Y. born laborer,George Snyder, living with them. Could this be the same family as in the1870 census, and also, is this our Ellen? Remember, census takers made alot of mistakes; sometimes getting their information from a neighbor, instead of the correct source. Also, New York is on the way betweenVermont and Illinois. Also, this Calvin & Mary household was not in N.Y.in 1870. Maybe they migrated to Illinois?

BIOGRAPHY: In the 1870 census of Little Rock Township, Kendall county,IL. (See FHC film #545,738, page 416), Nellie shows up as 28 year oldVermont born Nellie M. Selden (note spelling of last name), living with33 yr. old N.Y. born minister, Charles Hobbard (not sure of thespelling), and his 35 yr old Michigan born wife, Mary J. Could Mary be asister to Nellie? Charles & Mary's three children were also present, atthe time. They are 3 yr old Paul, 2 yr old Mariam F., both born inMichigan, and 7 month old Illinois born female, Rena M. There was nooccupation listed with Nellie in 1870.

On a picture of Nellie, in the possession of Candice Graham (of Canton,IL.), it is labeled as "Nellie M. Ferry". This goes along with the abovecensus. Don't know how the name Ellen came into being. The first I, Wm.E. Rohr, saw "Ellen" used for identifying her was in the 1880 census.

Could it be that the above mentioned Charles Hubbard, and Calvin Selden, were friends through being "ministers", maybe of the same church, only indifferent locations? Maybe, Charles, being 22 years younger than Calvin, studied under Calvin. NEED TO TRACT THEM BOTH IN 1860 TO VERIFY THEABOVE. ALSO NEED TO TRY TO FIND OUT WHICH CHURCHES THEY MINISTERED IN.

Also note that in the 1870 census of 7th Ward of Aurora, Kane county,IL.(see FHC film #545,735, page 96 and 97), there was a Selden family, all born in Vermont, living four houses away from Melancthon and SarahFerry. Remember that Sarah (Ford) Ferry did not live very long after shemarried Melancthon. This Selden family has a 53 yr old head, C. Selden, maybe a "Book Agent" (not sure of his occupation), married to 48 yr oldMary. They are certainly old enough to be Nellie's parents. Also, twodaughters, a 20 yr old Louisa and 16 yr old Julia, were living withthem. NEED TO TRACK THEM IN 1860 AND 1850. They show up again in thebelow 1880 census (notice their birth places):

BIOGRAPHY: Both of Nellie's parents were born in Vermont per the 1880census of Aurora, Kane co., IL. This census also used the name "Ellen"for her. It also showed her age as 38, hence the DOB of 1842.

BIOGRAPHY: She was still living, probable in the area, at the time ofher daughter's (Minnie) marriage to Allen T. Russell Sr., as she (Nellie)was one of the signing witnesses to the marriage on April 19, 1893 inWheaton, Du Page county, IL. She signed the marriage certificate as"Mrs. Nellie Ferry".

BIOGRAPHY: Nellie shows up in the census of Milton Township, WheatonCity, DuPage county, IL., dated June 6, 1900 (see FHC film #1,240,298page 231A; ED #33, sheet #16), as a 57 year old Vermont born (as wereboth her parents) widow, who was born in April 1843. She is listed asbeing the mother of 2 living children, out of three born. It wasn't knowby this researcher, until this record was found, that Nellie had had athird child that didn't survive (NEED TO CHECK FOR A RECORD OF THISCHILD). Nellie owned her home free of mortgage, even though it appearsshe is living with another family, John & Sarah Cady (hard to read thewriting). She occupation in 1900 was hard to read on this record butlooks like a "capitalist"; a person that capitalizes and/or is ajournalist. This would make sense because there is a printer, editor, and a couple stenographers, in the same area, so Nellie probably workedfor this publisher. Her youngest son, Charles, was living five housesaway, at the time.

NEED TO LOCATE HER IN THE 1910 CENSUS.

DEATH: See notes with her daughter's marriage.

DEATH: Per the record of the Spring Lake Cemetery in Aurora, IL., shewas 74 years old when she died in 1913.

DEATH: Per the record on the Internet of the "Illinois Statewide DeathIndex, 1916-1950", Nellie's death is recorded as on May 8th, 1919 inChicago, Cook Co., record #6014405.
NEED TO SEND FOR THIS RECORD.

They had the following children:

  F i Minnie Grace Ferry
  M ii Charles M. Ferry

Charles Clifton Russell [Parents] was born on 8 Jul 1896 in Wheaton, DuPage co., Il.. He died on 4 Feb 1950 in Harrisburg,, Pa.. He was buried on 8 Feb 1950 in East Harrisburg Cemetery, Penbrook, Pa.. He was baptized on 24 Jan 2002 in Arizo. He married Olive P. on 8 Jul 1921 in Il..

BIOGRAPHY: He graduated from the University of Illinois in Urbana, IL.on June 23, 1919 with a degree in agriculture, per info from Elizabeth G.Russell and the "program" from the university, which Elizabeth has.Charles also served on the Class Day Committee at his graduation.

BIOGRAPHY: He was "renting" and was employed on a "general farm" as a"farmer", per the 1920 census of Naperville Twp., Du Page co., IL.

BIOGRAPHY: Believe his wife's name was Olive E. Ellis. Her address was517 S. 24th. St., Harrisburg, Penn. They must have gotten marriedsometime after 1920 because he was single & living with his mother in the1920 census.

BIOGRAPHY: Charles was living at 1912 Herr St., Harrisburg, PA. at thetaking of the 1930 census there, dated April 14th. (see ED #22-34, sheet#9A, page 262). He was a "Department Head" at a "packing house" then.He owned their home, which was valued at $7500. Per this 1930 census,Charles was 25 years old when he married 22 year old Olive. Based ontheir age in 1930, Charles (33 yrs old) and Olive (31 years old) weremarried after July 8, 1921 but before Sept. 8, 1921. Also living withCharles and Olive in 1930 was their daughter, 6 year old Illinois bornCatherine, their son, Pennsylvania born Charles C., who was going on 5years old, as well as Minnie G. Russell, Charles' mother. Charles, Oliveand Catherine must have moved to Harrisburg, from Illinois (probable fromDuPage county), between about 1924 and 1925.

BIOGRAPHY: He was in Chicago for a few days, with his brother Allen, inApril 1934, when their mother was having a breast removed for cancer.

BIOGRAPHY: Per the Funeral Service Program for him, Charles was probablya member of the Trinity Methodist Church in the area of Harrisburg, PA.,as a Rev. Earl N. Rowe from that church was the officiating pastor atCharles' funeral.

Wm. E. Rohr has a picture of Charles in his files.

Olive P. was born on 8 Dec 1898 in Il.. She died in Sep 1969. She married Charles Clifton Russell on 8 Jul 1921 in Il..

Wm. E. Rohr has a copy of an old photo of an "Olive Pow - - - (Powers?Maybe wife of Charles C. Ferry. Age 13 yrs 7 mos. as of July 1912)".This Olive, in this picture, would be of the right age to be Charles'wife.

NEED TO CHECK THE 1900, 1910, & 1920 CENSUS FOR THIS OLIVE, ESPECIALLY INILLINOIS & PA.

See biography notes on Charles Clifton Russell for 1930 censusinformation. This census also indicated that both of Olive's parentswere born in Illinois.

They had the following children:

  F i Catherine Russell
  M ii Charles C. Russell

Thomas Russell was born in 1821/1836. He died on 8 Sep 1838. He married Ruth Jones.

World Family Tree CD #10 listed Elizabeth as first child, Sarah assecond, and Elijah as third and last child.

Wm. E. Rohr found the following information on FTM CD #178 (titled"Church Records: MD. & De. 1600-1800's").

In the biography of Allen T. Russell Sr., grandson to Thomas, it states"The grandfather of our subject served in the War of 1812, and members ofthe family were numbered among the heroes of the Revolution." NEED TOFOLLOW UP ON THIS.

Ruth Jones was born on 26 Dec 1804. She died in 1887. She married Thomas Russell.

Wm. E. Rohr, in his researching for Ruth, may have found her in the 1840census of the 4th. Ward of Baltimore. This particular Ruth Russell, asper this census, had males of one under 5, two between 15 and 20, twobetween 20 and 30, and one between 30 and 40, living with her in 1840.It was also reported that there were females of one between 10 and 15,one between 15 and 20 years of age, as well as one between 30 and 40,which was more than likely Ruth, herself. Were all these other males andfemales, sons and daughters of her and Thomas? Who was the one male"between 30 and 40 years old". Could this have been her husband and thedeath year we have on Thomas be in error?

So far, as of January 2003, Wm. E. Rohr has not been able to find RuthRussell in any census, be it 1850, 1860, or 1870. It is wondered if shemay have gotten remarried by 1850.

Could not find her in the 1880 Maryland census on CD, nor her twodaughters either whether under the name of Russell or their married names.

They had the following children:

  F i Elizabeth Russell
  F ii Sarah Russell
  M iii Elijah James Russell

John Brown [Parents] was born on 29 Mar 1800 in Maryland. He died on 30 Dec 1866 in Maryland. He was baptized in 1994 in Seatt. He was endowed in 1994 in the Seattle Washington temple. He married Phoebe Chapman on 12 May 1830 in Baltimore, Baltimore co., Md.. They were sealed in the SUBMIT temple.

The original year of birth came from 1850 census of the 4th. Ward ofBaltimore City (this census had his birth place as "CT."). Hisoccupation at the time was a "waterman". All names & dates for hisfamily came from this census also. (Note: there was another "Sea Capt"John Brown in the 1850 census of Baltimore).

As per the 1860 census of the 3rd. Ward of Baltimore City, he was a"Mariner" born in Maryland (believe this birth place to be correctbecause census of his children show their father being born in MD.).This record also shows a 14 yr. old "Francis"; this may be Travisinstead. (It's hard to decipher the hand writing on the census record.)

He is listed in the 1860 Baltimore City directory as "Capt. John Brown",a mariner, living at 2 S. Central Ave. This address is on the left sideof Central going south from 157 E. Baltimore.

He had died between the 1860 & 1870 census, because he was not listed aspart of the household in the 1870 census of Annapolis, MD. with Phoebe.

There is mention of a John Brown "moved to town, 1819" in the records ofthe Fells Point branch of the East Baltimore Station M.E. Church. Thiscould be our John Brown, as there is indications that he was a member inthe M.E. Church in Baltimore (see marriage record of Caroline).

His exact DOB and death date came from Kathy Prosser's records that shesent to Wm. E. Rohr. Her sources are unknown at this time.

Burial date and place is unknown at this time.

Wm. E. Rohr's researching for him left off on page 144 of cd #208 underJohn Brown.

Wm. E. Rohr has searched the below FHC records with no results:
film #859,276 Tombstone Inscriptions, Southern Anne Arundel County, Md.

There is more info on tree #3543 on World Family Tree cd #10 aboutpossible siblings to John Brown.

Phoebe Chapman [Parents] was born on 12 Jul 1808 in Connecticut. She died on 17 Aug 1890 in Md.. She was baptized in 1994 in Seatt. She was endowed in 1994 in the Seattle Washington temple. She married John Brown on 12 May 1830 in Baltimore, Baltimore co., Md.. They were sealed in the SUBMIT temple.

In the 1850 census for Baltimore, MD. it shows Maryland as her birthplace.

Birth place on the 1870 census for Annapolis, MD. shows she was born inConn.

Wm. E. Rohr believed she died between the taking of the 1870 and 1880census because she is nowhere to be found in the area of her children, in1880 (she didn't die until 1890). Note that her exact DOB and death datewere given to Wm. E. Rohr from Kathy Prosser. Kathy's sources for thesedates are unknown, at this time. NEED TO CHECK THE 1890 MORTALITYSCHEDULE FOR HER.

As of June 5th, 1900, Joseph and Mary, Phoebe's son & daughter-in-law,were still living in the 6th. Dist. of Annapolis, Md. at 149 PrinceGeorge St. (see Ed #13, sheet #9). Joseph was still in the "oysterbusiness". Note that this census also indicates that his father was bornin MD. and Joseph's mother was born in Conn.

The death certificate for her daughter, Caroline, states that she (Phebe)was born in MD. Wm. E. Rohr has a copy of this Death Certificate,#077735.

Also found a Phoebe Brown mentioned in the records of the M.E. Church,East Baltimore Station, Fells Point, as "deaths and removals, 1830-1839;she being "not known, 1839". This could be our Phoebe, as her daughter,Caroline was married by a minster of this church. If this record is forour Phoebe, it would mean that she had "moved" to another location, andtherefore, maybe another branch of the church.

Wm. E. Rohr has had the MD. State Archives search for a death record forPhoebe, in Baltimore City, from 1875 (first year they kept records) to1880. David, the researcher we talked to at the archives (phone #410-260-6429), says they will have any records that any other courts inMd. had. $20 pays for an hour's worth of research and copies of record.(Feb. 1, 2001) The results to the above search turned up nothing, per aletter they returned, dated March 7, 2001. They searched the BaltimoreCity Health Dept. (Death Record Index for years 1875 through 1879).

Burial date and place is unknown at this time.

On the World family Tree Cd #10, it has also listed another daughter ofJohn & Phoebe, an Evelyn Brown (estimated DOB, death date and marriagedate), who was married to a James Hazlett and they had a daughter, BelleSage Hazlett.

They had the following children:

  F i Amy Elizabeth Brown
  F ii Caroline Brown
M iii John Edward Brown II
  M iv Joseph H. Brown
M v Thomas J. Brown was born in 1843 in Maryland. He was sealed to his parents in the SUBMIT temple. He was endowed in the SUBMIT temple.

On the cd titled North America Vital Records Index there is a Susan S.Rupp married to a Thomas Brown on 8 April 1886 in Carroll co., Md. Needto check the 1900 census to see if the age of Thomas matches our Thomasborn about 1843.
  M vi Travers T. Brown
  F vii Josephine J. Brown
F viii Sarah Brown was born in 1849 in Maryland. She was sealed to her parents in the SUBMIT temple. She was baptized on 9 Nov 1999 in Arizo. She was endowed on 14 Jul 2000 in the Mesa Arizona temple.

Check the 1880 Annapolis, Anna Arundel co., MD. census for her to bemarried to a Louis A. Brewer.

No, she isn't. Louis A. Brewer was a 35 yr old MD. born"crabber-laborer" married to a 30 yr old MD. born Laura in the 1880census of Annapolis (see FHC film #1254494, page 208A). They have fourchildren at the time.
M ix James Brown was born in 1850 in Maryland.

Found a 30 yr. old (painter) James on page 158 of film #T9-497 (Nat.Archives) (ED-10, pg-9, line-30) with Mary (wife), Willie (son, 4 yrs.old), and Amie (daughter, 2 yrs. old). Everybody was born in Maryland, including the parents of the above mentioned James.

Found a 32 yr. old James E. Brown ("letter carrier"), 38 yr. old wife -Mary, 10 yr. old daughter - Ella, and 4 yr. old son - James, in the 1880census of 4th Prict., 19th Ward of Baltimore, MD. All were born in MD.,including their parents. They were family #175, living at 235 PierceSt. See FHC film #1254504, ED 191, sheet 21 (top of page).

John Thomas Russell [Parents] was born on 7 Jun 1859 in Baltimore, Baltimore Co., Maryland. He died on 14 Jan 1949 in Illinois. He was baptized on 24 Jan 2002 in Arizo. He married Carolyne Ellen Hoeppner on 13 Sep 1890 in Illinois.

NEED TO SEARCH THE 1880 ILLINOIS CENSUS FOR JOHN, AS HE CANNOT BE FOUNDIN MARYLAND IN 1880. Cannot find him in Illinois either.

He is not anywhere in Anne Arundel county, including Annapolis, in the1880 census (FHC film #1,254,494).

Searched the following FHC films for him in the 1880 census of Baltimore.
1,254,498 2nd - 5th. Wards
1,254,500 8th - 10th. Wards
1,254,503 part of 16th - 18th Ward
1,254,504 18th -19th Ward
1,254,505 19th Ward to Ed 207, Sht 1 of 1st. Prct. of 20th ward

Wm. E. Rohr has only found the below possibility for our John Russell inthe 1880 census, so far (note that all data does not match previous data, but this census data could have been recorded, by the census taker, inerror):

Living in Waverly, Baltimore co., MD. (see FHC film #1254496, page 271D)was
John Russell - 21 yr old Md. born "painter", both his parents born in MD.
Sallie Russell - 26 yr old MD. born wife to John, both parents born in MD.
Carie Russell - 24 yr old MD. born sister to John, both parents born inMD. (We believe this Carie was not related to our John because of herage. If her age was recorded correctly in this census, she would havebeen born at least two years before Elijah & Caroline were married.)

Remember that in the 1910 census of Baltimore, concerning John'smother, it was recorded that Caroline had had 4 children children. Thefourth child has never been located (for sure). Could this Carie be thatchild? If so, where was she in the 1860 or 1870 census? Was she"visiting" other family, or friends, when both the 1860 and 1870 censuswas taken? Also: John had an Uncle (John Love) that became a "painter"prior to 1890 (see notes with John and Amy Love), and as John Russellbecame a painter before the 1900 census, does that make this John in 1880even more likely ours? Did John Russell get his training to be a"painter" from his Uncle John? Where is John's middle brother, 14 yearold Elijah J., when the 1880 census was taken?

Wm. Rohr has on file a 1900 census of a John H. Russell, 4 children fromanother marriage {before this one}, his present wife in 1900, and 2 morechildren by that marriage. All living at Prince George Street inAnnapolis, MD. This is the same area as many of the Browns that wererelated by Elijah James Russell's marriage to Caroline Brown. Don't knowif this record is of a relative of Elijah James Russell.

Wm. E. Rohr also has a census record on file for Chicago area in 1900(NEED TO GET A PHOTO COPY OF THIS CENSUS). This matches John's age withthe 1870 census of Annapolis, Md., showing him as a child with hisparents. This 1900 census also shows his father's birth place asPennsylvania, the same as the 1870. Also note that his occupation was apainter, the same as Caroline's brother-in-law {John A. Love who marriedAmy Brown).

As per a letter William Rohr got from his Aunt Francis (Russell), thisfamily in the Chicago area is the correct one. Also got year of John'sdeath and several other dates and marriages from this same letter.

As per this letter, he was a "jokester" and a "baseball nut".

In the 1920 census of Maywood Village, Proviso Twp., Cook co., IL. (FHCfilm #1,820,362; ED #195, sheet #13, line #51), which is the same area aswhere they lived in 1900, John was listed as a "paper hanger" working for"wages' for a "decorating co." This census shows his father being bornin PA. also. This census list his wife as 63 yr. old Carolyne, born inGermany, as well as her parents. They had 3 daughters living with themthen. Twenty-eight yr old Carolyn was a "stenographer" working in an"office". Their 26 yr old daughter, Ethel, was in the same employment.Ruth was a 24 yr old "school teacher".

Wm. E. Rohr also has a copy of the 1930 census(dated April 14, 1930), ofthe same area of Maywood, IL. (ED #15-16, Sheet #13A, line 46 {page183}), with John and his wife and a daughter in it. They were living at240 S. 20th. Ave., Maywood Village, in their home, which they owned andwhich was valued at $12,000. John was still employed, for wages, as a"paper hanger", of "private homes". Note that, again on this censusrecord, it is recorded that John's father (Elijah James) was born in NewJersey, whereas all other records have him being born in PA. Also seenotes under John's wife and daughter.

His father's pension file states that "there is no public record, ofeither the city of Baltimore, or of the churches, in which they (meaningElijah Sr.'s children) were christened."

Per a letter, dated December 18, 1940, sent to Fannie & Allen T. RussellJr. of Nauvoo, IL. by Ethel Eveleth, Karl's wife, she states "Karl, youknow hails from N.H. - - -", which could mean that he was born in N.H.Karl & Ethel's address then was 1407 S. 13th. Ave.; Maywood, IL.

Ethel Russell [Parents] was born on 13 Jul 1893 in Illinois. She died in Jul 1976 in Illinois. She married Karl S. Eveleth on 29 Aug 1925.

Per a letter she wrote on July 19, 1934 from her home at 1407 S. 13thSt., Maywood, IL. (near Chicago), to Fannie Russell, who was in Bushnellthen, Ethel's husband may have been Karl. She also states that hermother was sick, at the time, and that Ruth Russell Gerbig from Baltimore(maybe her sister??) and Ruth's husband had paid them a visit, but thenRuth became sick. She noted that Ruth was an "unknown cousin". There isalso mention in the letter by Ethel, another Ruth "running atemperature". Not sure if this Ruth is her sister, or if it's the sameone mentioned later, as visiting and then getting sick (may be one in thesame).

Per the 1900 census, she was born in August of 1893 (which we had downonce). She was a twin to her sister, Edith, per the World Family Tree CD#10.

Per another note that she sent to Allen & Fannie, on a Christmas card(undated), she wrote:
"Dear Folks;
As usual I didn't answer Fannie's letter as I intended to do. I wasreally very busy with Fair visitors, so maybe that's an excuse. Threesets of Karls relatives came from the east, and altho only part of themstayed with us, it really meant extra work and time.
You certainly had hard luck with your baby, but I hope he's all welland strong by now.
We were so sorry that you couldn't come to the fair, but cheer up.You will have another chance and I hope you can plan to stay severaldays. There's no law against you bringing some of the children andreally making a visit, you know.
Two of father's cousins - Roland and Catherine Brown from Annapolis, stopped at the folks. They are lovely people.
Business here seems to be picking up and everyone continues to be well.
Would of course love to hear how things are going with you. As ever,Ethel"

The above mentioned Roland & Catherine Brown were brother & sister, children of Travers & Catherine Brown. Travers was a brother to CarolineBrown. Travers owned a store in Annapolis, MD. (see notes on him) andalso was Chief of Police in Annapolis once.

Ethel and Allen T. Russell Jr. were first cousins.
