DOECKE

August

DEATHS AT STOCKPORT. STOCKPORT, December 9.— Two well known men of the district have died suddenly. On Saturday morning Mr. James Fyfe, aged 71 years, was helping to load a wagon of hay at his brother’s homestead. He was driving, and the hay slipped, and pushed him among the horses. The old man fell to the ground, and the wagon passed over him. He was killed instantly. Mr. Fyfe was a bachelor and a genial man. —As Mr. August Doecke, a bachelor, of Bethel, was driving to church with his sister and a lady friend last night, he suddenly let the reins go and lurched forward, when about a couple of chains from the church. Men ran to his assistance, but on arrival found that life was extinct. He was of an unassuming manner, genial, and kindhearted, and a willing and generous giver to patriotic funds and any needy institution.

ACCIDENTALLY DROWNED. - Kapunda, March 13. Mr. T. G. Herman Vogt, a prominent re- sident of Bethel, near Kapunda, was found drowned in a tank at the Lutheran Church property on Friday morning. From enquiries made by the police it was found that the death was accidental. Mr. Vogt had been asked at a meeting of the church, of which he was a member, how much water was in the tank, and he evidently was reading the gauge. The wall of the tank is 2 ft. above ground, and the wall about the same width, and he being a short man, had to lean far over, and seemingly over-balanced, falling into 8 ft. of water. His son and nephew noticed the sheet of iron off the tank, and recovered the body. Mr. Vogt was 61 years of age, and besides being a prominent member of the church, and also for many years a member of the Kapunda District Council.

FARMER DROWNED. - KAPUNDA, March 15.-Mr. Hermann Vogt, aged 60 years, a farmer, of Bethel, was accidentally drowned in an under- ground tank, containing 8 ft. of water, yesterday morning. He was missed soon after he got out of bed, but little notice was taken of the fact until one of his sons observed that the lid was off the tank and his father's hat in the water. It is surmised that he was looking into the tank to ascertain bow much water was there (he had previously stated his intention of doing so) and overbalanced. He was unable to swim. An inquest was conducted by the Coroner (Mr. H. J. Skull), and a verdict of accidental drowning was re turned. Deceased had farmed in this district for many years, and was highly esteemed.

He came from Silesia, Germany, in 1854, with his parents, who, having lived at Tanunda for a while, set tled at the picturesque little township, which lies in the range west of Kapunda.
