Liudolf (also called Ludolf), the Child (ca. 1000 - 11 April 1031 ) was a son of Count Palatine Ezzo of Lorraine (c.954-1034) and Matilda (deceased November 4, 1025), daughter of Emperor Otto II ( Ottonians ) (973-983).

 

By his descent Liudolf an important figure in German politics. Through his father he was one of the richest nobles of Lorraine and his mother was the closest male relative of Emperor Otto III . After the death of Otto in 1002 Liudolf was one of the leading candidates for the throne but his place was politically adept Henry II chosen. Liudolf was two years old, and had thus his nickname "the Child". After the death of Henry in 1024 Liudolf tried again to be king but he was trumped by the Salians Conrad II .

 

Liudolf was married to Matilda, daughter of Otto I of Zutphen . Liudolf was Count of Bonn and Zutphen , lord of Alzey and Waldberg, guardian of his father founded Brauweiler Abbey (home of the Abbey Ezzonen) and military leader of the Archbishop of Cologne. He was buried in the abbey of Brauweiler.
