This website is an attempt to document the ancestors and descendants of John Denney who served in Captain George Keeling's lower company of foot from New Kent County, Virginia, in 1702. Through his grandson Zachariah, and his son or grandson Samuel Denney (of Amherst County, Virginia, and Surry County, North Carolina, John Denney is the ancestor of most of the Denney's that today live in Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, California, Oregon, and Washington.
Other researchers have well documented the descendants of Samuel Denney. I will concentrate my work on the lines of my ancestor Zachariah Denney. Zachariah was born about 1732 in Hanover County, Virginia, and moved across the Virginia Frontier with his his family during the 1730s and 40s, first to the James River near what is today the Goochland and Albemarle County lines, and then to a plantation on both sides of the Staunton River in what are today Pittsylvania and Campbell Counties, Virginia. After he reached adulthood, Zachariah moved to Halifax County, Virginia, near the North Carolina Line and then across the line into North Carolina, living on a farm that straddles the current day Person and Granville County lines. Around 1800, Zachariah and his grandsons, Claiborne Denney, John Denney, and Benjamin Denney moved to the area of Beaverdam Creek just north of present day Raleigh, North Carolina, and he died there between 1805 and 1810. During the early 1800's the three younger Denney brothers moved to Smith County, Tennessee, and today their descendants number over 10,000 and include a former vice president of the United States another United States Senator and a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame.
