"Two years ago my hand was injured in a cotton gin as a result of the injury, I have no use of the hand. It is my left hand. My knee was injured about seven months ago. I was laid up at about a month. It troubles me at times.
Upon examination we find the following objective conditions: Pulse rate: 80, respiration: 21, temperature 99, height 5 feet 8 inches, weight 129 pounds, age 51 years. General appearance healthy. The left hand has been cut in cotton gin. The index and middle fingers and thumb are atrophic. All joints of hand are auchylosed. Hand feels cold and clamy. The hand is of no use. Forearm of left side is atrophiced otherwise no disabilities exist. PS..There is a roughness under the left pathea and he claims at times there is a partial dislocation of same the ligaments seem relaxed. He is in our opinion entitled to a 17/18 rating for disability caused by injury to hand and injury to knee."....November 4, 1891.

NOTE:
I believe his sister Nancy married a JAMES HATCHER. They were neighbors and when the Hatchers moved to Iowas James took Nancy with him as his wife. The 1860 Iowa census lists a Dennis male living with James and Nancy Dennis. This Dennis was Jeremiah. James and Nancy went to Nebraska about 1880- 85. I do have them on the 1885 state census for Dodge County, Nebraska. The HATCHERS, LOWES, DENNIS, FARMER and WHITTENBERGS in this census are related by intermarriage and children.
