The Normal literary met Friday evening with Prof. W. M. Durham, of Morehead in the chair and rendered a very interesting program as follows:

Value of literary culture - W. M. Durham.

Lecture on Parliamentary Law - John M. Perry.

Value of order in Literary work - Prof. M. D. Jordan.

Value of Oratory - John M. Waugh.

The question of educational qualifications for suffrage was discussed by Misters Waugh Gilkerson in the affirmative, and Durham , Morrison, and Williams, in the negative. Decision was rendered in favor of the affirmative.

Prof. Perry visited his family at Olive Hill Saturday and Sunday.

Prof. Durham was at Soldier Sunday on business.

E. A. Williams is famous in these parts for his theological talents; S.S. Morrison is our greatest orator, and J. M. Waugh leads all in the science and mathematics.

W. S. Jarvis, of Cora, John Kitchen, of Leon, and T. A. James, of Fireclay, who are attending school here were visiting their respective home on Saturday and Sunday.

Amos Watson, of Webbville was visiting relatives here Saturday and Sunday. He will be with us when his school closes.

  It has been quite awhile since I wrote to the Bugle, but I will begin by saying that it is very cold at present.

T. J. Williams has been calling on his best girl here for a few days; He seemed to enjoy himself very much.

Miss Dora Sexton the Belle of Rush has been visiting friends here over Saturday and Sunday.

Misses Myrtle Williams was the hostess of several friends Sunday.

R.D. Clay was seen taking some nice apples to Miss Maud Biggs who is attending the Denton Normal here. This would naturally imply that she is the apple of his eye.

The writer is inform that it literally rained rocks near Mr. E. Boggs of Rosedale, Christmas Eve.

Elijah Walker, of  Rosedale, past though here Saturday in route to Rush, where he called on his sweetheart Sunday.

J. D. Williams was seen going to get his license Monday morning.

A. D. Reeves was married to Ebba Campbell Saturday night may it be a happy union.

Dr. H. W. Sparks of Ashland, was the guest of his family here last week.

Mrs. Honshell Johnson of Catlettsburg and Miss Dolly Kenderick of Vincent, were visiting friends at this place last week.

Mrs. Eva Stewart of Garner, is visiting her parents Mr. and Mrs. William Bellew this week.

Dr. Thomas C. Burton of Rush, is now domiciled in our little town, and from indications is receiving a very liberal patronage.

Lafe Webb who has been on the sick list for quite awhile, is able to out again.

Denton can now boast one of the finest schools in Eastern Kentucky. Prof. Boothe is certainly a very able instructor. Our Normal is already largely attended, with new arrivals every few days. Those matriculating the last week are: Misses Maud Biggs of Pleasant Valley, Lizzie Loomis, of  Enterprise, Chole Criswell, of Fontana, Misses Easterling, Stinson Clarence Childers, Garner, Monroe Glancy, Glancy Fork, Misses Minnise Bellew and Mary Queen.

Webb Bros. have purchased M.T. Cooksey's stock of goods at Denton in the old J.J. Miller stand, and are doing a good business.

The health of our community is very good at present. Elijah Walker, of the Denton Normal, visited home folks at Deer Creek last week.

Rev. George Justice of East Fork filled his appointment at this place last Saturday and Sunday.

George Everman, of Grayson was in our midst last week.

We are now having a very large and interesting Normal with frequent matriculations. The latest being Jos. Fannin, Garner ; Oscar Lafayette and James Stewart, Glancy Fork; Susan Lucas, East Fork; Mabel Literal, Music; Herbert Blankenship, Anglin; Thomas Glancy, Johnson Chapel; Lucy Criswell and Lizzie Sammons, Leon.

Our school with Prof. I. H. Boothe teacher is progressing nicely. There is about 60 pupils in attendance, and new pupils being enrolled daily. The professor is an up- to -date teacher and is well qualified to teach anything that pertains to practical and business education.

Robert Biggs, of Cox and John P. Gee, of McGlone were visiting friends and relatives here during Saturday and Sunday. Gee says he likes the country fine.

Willie Barrett was calling on his best girl at Johnson Chapel Sunday. Willie is a strong link in the Denton Normal.

Miss Nannie Carroll one of our most prominent young ladies, who has been visiting friends and relatives at Morehead, Grayson, and other places, has made her return.

Miss Lizzie Sammons and F.A. Easterling, who are attending school at the Denton Normal were guests of Moss E. Burton at Rush Tuesday night.

Miss Mary Queen, one of our most prominent young ladies, who has been, who has been visiting friends and relatives at East Fork has made her return.

Miss Florence Reeves, our late assistant postmaster, has resigned her position and has accepted a position as general agent for the "Gee Whizz" Soap Co. We wish her success in all her undertakings. Miss Florence is one of our most prominent young ladies and there is no one that doubts her success, and in all her efforts she has the best wishes of all who surround her. She stands second to none.

Henry Queen is going to stay at home this summer and farm some at his home place on Straight Creek.

Millard Leslie, on returning from his home in Lawrence County last Saturday, saw a huge wild cat appear before him and being armed as usual with his vest pocket 22 he opened fire an the huge animal, and after he had exhausted all of his ammunition Eleanor Queen came to his rescue and upon close examination they discovered that he had killed a sick kitten which Tom Queen had carried up there and give it up to die.

Attorneys Prater and Waugh were at Denton on Tuesday.

3-30-1918

  Mrs. F. J. Duvall, one of the first settlers of Denton which place bears her maiden name died Monday morning at 12:25 o' clock at the age of 79 years. Her death has caused much genuine sorrow for she was a women of many noble characteristics which endeared her to all who knew her. She has many warm friends in this section of this state. 

The beautiful funeral service was conducted from the Denton church by Rev. Woods of Ashland.

R.R. Stamper has sold his home here and will move to Ashland immediately to their new home on 32nd and Central Ave.

Miss Susie Calhoun who made her home for many years with Mrs. F.J. Duvall will leave soon for Portsmouth, Ohio where she will make her home with her sister Mrs. Grover Queen.

3-5-1942  

A large crowd attended the services held at the Denton School house Sunday. The preacher was a returned missionary who has been in Mexico, Africa, China, The West Indies, and in the Philippines.

Miss Willa Ray Kibbey was in Catlettsburg Saturday on business. While there she visited friends throughout the city. 

Miss Helen Davis was visiting Mr. and Mrs. Volie Davis over the weekend.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bailey and son Jimmie were shopping in Grayson last week.

A birthday dinner was given at the home of Mr. and Mrs. O.C. Sterwart Sunday in honor of Mrs. W.H. Stewart. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Stewart and daughter Jean, Helen Clay and Thelma Clay of Ashland, and Mr. and Mrs. O.C. Stewart and son Grady. Mrs. Stewart  celebrated her 67th birthday on this occasion.

4-16-1942

Georgetta Pennington of Logan, W. Va., was the weekend guest of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Pennington.

Mrs. Harold Nickol of Logan, W. Va., was the weekend guest of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Reeves.

Mr. and Mrs. Nigel Rice and two sons, Billy and Gene were the Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bailey.

J.A. Pennington, Miss Belva Sparks and Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Jeurgensmeyer and son Julian were the Sunday afternoon guest of Mr. and Mrs. L.E. Pennington.

Mrs. Jane Blankenship is ill.

Miss Willa Kibbey and brother, Frank attended church in Ashland Sunday.

A revival meeting is being held at the Methodist Church on Straight Creek with Rev. McCall from Ohio in charge. Large crowds are attending.

Rev. Dave Glancy and Mrs. Glancy of Ashland attended church at the Methodist meeting Sunday and Monday nights.

Mr. and Mrs. O.C. Stewart attended church on Straight Creek Sunday night.

There will be a baptizing on Straight Creek, Sunday, April 19, at 2 o’clock (War Time).

Mr. and Mrs. Charley Horton from Big Cat were visiting friends here Sunday.

4-30-1942  

Revival meeting will begin at Denton, School, May 3 with Rev. Cecil Barber from Ashland preaching.

Charles Pennington who works in West Virginia spent the weekend with his wife and parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lin Pennington.

Lee Miller, Robert Bentley and son, Jimmy, were visitors in Grayson Saturday.

Mr. and  Mrs. Calhoun Jordan are announcing the birth of a son. The youngster has been named Woodrow.

Mr. and  Mrs. Russell Queen and son, were visiting  his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Queen during the past weekend.

Mrs. Butler Tussey who has been very ill, is improved.

Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Pennington of Logan, were visiting Mr. and Mrs. Leo Trent, and Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Pennington, during the past weekend.

Rogers homecoming was held at Central Park in Ashland, Sunday, August 30.

Gradie Stewart, another Morehead student, was visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. O.C. Stewart over the weekend.

Clyde Waugh attended church on Straight Creek Saturday night. Mr and Mrs. Robert Bailey and son Jimmy and Miss Willa Ray Kibbey were visiting in Grayson Sunday afternoon.

Mr. and Mrs. Harmie Rogers and daughters were visiting his brother Harmer Rogers Sunday.

Mrs. Cassie Waugh was visiting Mrs. Mary Bailey Monday.

Mrs. Mary Houck and daughter Gracie were shopping in Grayson Monday.

A revival meeting which has been in progress at the Straight Creek Methodist church for the past two weeks closed Sunday night. Rev. and Mrs. Harry Bird of Huntington W. Va., were the preachers.

Rev. Dave Glancy of Ashland will preach at the Methodist church Sunday, Nov. 15 at 11 O'Clock

Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Waugh attended church at Straight Creek Saturday night.

Mr. and Mrs. Everett Waugh and children from Brooking W. Va., were visiting his parents W.M. Waugh, over the weekend.

Mr. and Mrs. Bert Stamper and children from West Virginia were visiting his father P.J. Stamper, and sister Mrs. Nora Reeves over the weekend.

Mr. and Mrs. Russell Queen and son Stewart were visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Queen over the weekend.

Mr. and Mrs. Bill Sargent of Holland, W. Va., were visiting his parents Mr. and Mrs. Jack Sargent, over the weekend.

Mrs. C. C. Stewart is is quite ill at this writing.

Mrs. Belvia Sparks, who has been very ill is much improved. Her many friends will be glad to hear this good news.

Mrs. W. E. Reeves who has been ill, is able to be out again. Her many friends will be happy to hear of her improvement.

The many friends of Mr. Junior Waggoner will be sorry to hear that he was hit by a car on Saturday. He was taken to the Stovall Hospital by Harmie Rogers.

Robert Bailey shopped at Grayson Saturday.

6-15-1950

Rev. Ekhene Lucas held church at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bailey, Sunday. There will be services next Sunday at 1:30. Everybody is invited.

Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Evans and son of Ohio, were visiting her parents Mr. and Mrs. Taney Waugh.

A large crowd attended the fish fry at Coalton on Saturday night. Mrs. Gussie Waugh and daughter Bessie were shopping in Grayson on Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Jenkins from Ohio were visiting  their grandparents Mr. and Mrs. W.M. Waugh over the weekend.

Mr. and Mrs. George Crum and daughter were visiting Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bailey and attended church at Hitchins on Sunday.

Mr. Ed Waddell from Jeriel, Ky was visiting Mary Bailey Saturday night and friends on Straight Creek.

A family reunion was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H.L. Rogers and a large crowd attended, all reported a good time.

Mr. Ed Stewart and children of Ligon, Ky were visiting his sister and brother Mr. and Mrs. O.C. and Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Stewart.

Rev. Clyde Jordan and Rev. Ephraim Lucas held services the past week at the Straight Creek Church. Several from Denton attended the services Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. Linzie Pennington were visiting their daughter, Mrs. Leo Trent and Mr. Trent, Sunday.

Butler Tussey, Denton, collected his family on their childhood farm on Sunday, July 15, for a family reunion. More than sixty family members and friends attended.

8-2-1951

There will be church at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bailey on August 12 at 1 o’clock. The Moore family from Stinson will be there to sing. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The Straight Creek Sunday School went to Central Park at Ashland for a picnic last week.

Mr. and Mrs. Estill Waugh and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bailey attended church at Hitchins Sunday night.

The Waugh and Bellew families had their family reunion at Central Park, Ashland, last Sunday.

Dr. and Mrs. Grady Stewart and children were visiting his parents, Sunday, and Dr. James Stewart who has been in Korea for the past ten months is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Stewart at Denton.

Mrs. Nellie Williams is ill this week.

Miss Bessie Waugh is visiting relatives in West Virginia this week.

A large crowd attended church Sunday afternoon at Straight Creek.

There will be church at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bailey on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. The Moore singers will be there and every one is invited to attend.

The many friends of Mr. Howard Waugh of West Virginia will be sorry to hear that he was seriously injured in an automobile accident. Mr. Waugh is a former resident of Carter County.

Mr. and Mrs. Clifton Rogers are announcing the birth of a baby girl.

Mr. and Mrs. Estill Waugh and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bailey attended church at Hitchins, Saturday night.

9-6-1951

A large crowd attended the Crum and Calhoun homecoming last Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bailey and Bailes Stewart attended the Stewart homecoming on August 26, at the Central Park in Ashland.

Mr. and Mrs. Edd Harding of Baltimore, Md., have been visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.M. Pennington at Willard and on Sunday visited Mrs. Nellie Williams and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bailey.

August 23, 1951

A large crowd attended the tent meeting at Grayson Sunday night. Those attending from here were: Mr. and Mrs. Earl Sargent, Mr. and Mrs. Estill Waugh and daughter, Bessie, and Mrs. Mary Bailey.

Mr. and Mrs. Willis Tomian and children from West Virginia were visiting her sister, Mrs. Estill Waugh and family over the weekend.

Miss Bessie Waugh, who has been visiting her aunt for the last month, in West Virginia, returned home last Saturday.

Miss Ruby Stewart, Mrs. Nora Reeves, Mrs. Gussie Waugh and Mrs. Mary Bailey attended church at Willard last week.

Denton Man with Korean Lynx Raiders: Participates in Raids on Enemy Positions Under Cover of Night

Daring night raids behind enemy lines are part of the day’s work to all-volunteer "Blue Lynx Raiders" platoon of the 14th Infantry Regiment.

Pfc. Marion Lucas of Denton, Ky., a member of the commandolike unit, recently returned from a sortie behind enemy lines to recount the Raiders’ latest exploit.

Ordered to bring in Chinese prisoners, the platoon set out early in the morning, moving through two enemy-held villages and setting up an ambush in a third.

Two Chinese soldiers who walked into the trap were captured, but a third escaped and spread the alarm.

Surrounded soon afterward, the platoon sent a messenger who slipped through enemy lines to lead a rescue party back to his unit.

The Raiders brought in their prisoners.

Charles Elmer Williams, of North Carolina, was visiting his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. A.N. Pennington at Willard this week. He also visited his grandmother Williams, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bailey, his aunt and uncle, at Denton.

Crawler Flaugher was visiting on Lost Creek Sunday.

Several from Denton attended services at the Holiness Church at Hitchins, Sunday night.

Mrs. W.M. Waugh has returned home after visiting with her children in Ohio.

Charley Waugh of Ashland was visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.M. Waugh, over the weekend.

The many friends of Rev. Ora Slone, pastor of Denton Baptist Church, will be sorry to know he is ill and wish him a speedy recovery.

The many friends of Rev. John Thomas will be very sorry to learn of his death.

Mrs. Nellie Williams is not well at this time. Dr. Bishop of Grayson called to see her Saturday.

Mrs. Ruby Stewart is ill at this writing.

Eugene Rice, a nephew of Mrs. Mary Bailey, Denton correspondent for the Journal-Enquirer, is now in the Navy stationed at the United States Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Illinois.

Little Grady (Pete) Flaugher was the Sunday night guest of Mrs. Mary Bailey. He was nine years old Sunday, Jan. 24.

Rev. Harry Wells from Grayson held services at Strait Creek Sunday night.

Little Grady (Pete) Flaugher was supposed to go to Huntington WSAZ studios to audition for a television appearance on the "Parade of Stars" last Thursday, but he was sick at home with chicken pox. So the date has been postponed to Feb. 18 at 1 p.m.

Mrs. Stella Stewart, Mrs. Alice Miller and Mrs. Ruby Stewart attended Sunday school at Strait Creek Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. Homer Ratcliff and Bill Ratcliff were shopping at Grayson last Friday.

Mr. and Mrs. Croler Flaugher and Mrs. Bob Berry and daughter, Jean, were visiting Mary Bailey Sunday.

Rev. Earl Stewart of Grahn will hold services at Strait Creek Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. All are welcome to attend.

Denton Youth to Appear on TV Program

Carter County will have one of its talented youngsters appearing on the Parade of Stars TV program at Huntington Sunday, Feb. 21 at 1 p.m.

The Denton youth, Grady (Pete) Flaugher, will sing on the program one of his famous renditions he is widely known for in his section of the county.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Croler Flaugher of Denton.

All Carter Countians are urged to listen to him and then vote by sending in a card to the Stars Parade of Stars, % Star Furniture Company, Huntington, W. Va. If we all get behind him he is sure to win and bring honor to our county.

Grady (Pete) Flaugher auditioned for the "Parade of Stars" last Thursday, Feb. 18 and made fine. Mrs. Mary Bailey, correspondent for the Journal-Enquirer, accompanied him to Huntington. Since the program is booked for several weeks in advance, Pete will appear on the talent program one Sunday in March. The date will be announced later.

Mr. and Mrs. Bill Jones of Middletown, Ohio, visited his mother, Mrs. Bert Flaugher, and Mrs. Jones’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Howell at Glenwood over the weekend.

The many friends of Mr. Henry Evans will be so sorry to hear of his death.

Mr. and Mrs. W.M. Bailey and granddaughter of Ashland visited Mrs. Mary Bailey Sunday.

The many friends of Miss Sue Mullins will be sorry to hear that she is ill at her home.

Mr. and Mrs. Estill Waugh are announcing the marriage of their daughter, Bessie, to Pvt. Woodrow Cains, son of Mr. And Mrs. Oscile Cains of Denton. They were married March 10.

Mr. and Mrs. Tony Waugh are announcing the wedding of their daughter, Evelyn Waugh, to Mr. Davis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Burt Davis of Williams Creek. They were married March 13th.

Mrs. Emma Rogers and Mrs. Mary Waugh Gave Mr. And Mrs. Davis a household shower Saturday afternoon. They received many beautiful things. A large crowd attended and all reported a fine time.

Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Evans and children and Garlin Waugh of Ohio visited their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tony Waugh, over the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Herman Morrison and two daughters, Miss Betty McGuire of Hitchins and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Jones of Ohio, and Mr. and Mrs. Carler Flaugher and children visited Mary Bailey Saturday.

Little Grady (Pete) Flaugher, who has been sick, is able to be back in school.

Mr. and Mrs. Bob Barry and children visited his father, Mr. Dennis Berry, Sunday.

A household shower will be given in honor of Cpl. and Mrs. Woodrow Cain, April 10, 1 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Estill Waugh. The many friends of Mr. Ted Queen will be very sorry to hear that he is still ill, and will wish him a speedy recovery.

Mr. and Mrs. Bill James were visiting his mother, Mrs. Burt Flaugher, and Mrs. James’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Howell, at Glenwood over the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Steve Clay and sons, Marion and Howard, and Levery Gollihue were visiting Mary Bailey Sunday night.

Mr. and Mrs. O. C. Stewart were visiting Mrs. Myrtle Lucas, who is very ill; on Sunday. Mrs. Lucas’ many friends wish her a speedy recovery.

Miss Omerea Flaugher and little Grady (Pete) Flaugher visited Mary Bailey over the weed end.

Mrs. Mary Bailey entertained, Saturday, with a birthday party, in honor of her sister, Mrs. Nellie Williams, on her 88th birthday. Those enjoying the occasion were Mr. and Mrs. George Crum, Mrs. Roy James, Mrs. Effie Burke, Mrs. Charley Stewart, Miss Bessie Waugh, Mrs. Ruby Stewart, and Mr. Eugene Rice.

Those sending gifts were Mrs. Nora Reeves, Mrs. Ethel Thornsbury, Mr. and Mrs. George Rice, of Jeriel; Mr. and Mrs. Luther Hicks, Ashland; Mrs. Laura Thomas, Miss Willa Ray Kibbey, Mrs. M.V. Hicks, Mrs. Gertrude C. Kibbey, Mr. and Mrs. Chester B. Williams, of Florida; Mr. and Mrs. Ira Williams, Jr., of Baltimore, Md.

Mrs. Williams received many nice gifts. The large birthday cake, which was decorated with 88 candles, and ice cream and iced tea, was served to all present.

Rev. Clyde Jordan held services at Straight Creek Sunday night.

There will be church services at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bailey on Sunday afternoon, at 1:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Several from here attended the Free Will Baptist Church at Hitchins, last Sunday.

Dr. and Mrs. Grady Stewart and children and Mrs. Stella Stewart were visiting Mrs. Mary Bailey, Sunday afternoon.

Mrs. Ruby Trent who has been very ill, is some improved at this time.

Mrs. Mary Waugh was visiting in Denton, last week.

Mr. and Mrs. Jonah Waggoner and children, Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Waugh , and Mrs. Mary Bailey attended the funeral of Rev. Harvey Kelley at Willard.

Glancy Fork  Mrs. Bob Hogg and sons from Detriot, Mich. have been visiting Mrs. Virgie Adkins.

Clyde Romans was visiting in Catlettsburg, Friday, with Mr. and Mrs. Allen Stigall and son Paul.

Misses Jean and Evelyn Romans have returned home after a two week visit with their sister, Mrs. Ed Emerson and Rev. Emerson at West Van Lear.

Ed Holbrook of Grayson was the Sunday guest of Clyde Romans and family.

Lovell Romans was visiting in Lawrence County, Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. Jim McWhartor were visiting in Grayson, Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Tussey and sons were the Sunday guests of Mrs. Rose Tussey

Mr. and Mrs. Pete Tackett and family were business visitors in Grayson, Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. Bob Sammons and family and Mr. and Mrs. Arvil Kelley were the Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Romans.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Jeurgensmyer and son of Logan W. Va., are spending their vacation here at their farm.

Miss Belva Sparks of Logan, W. Va., was the Saturday guest of Mrs. Clyde Romans at Brooksdale farms.

Arthur Tornsburgh of Detroit, Mich., is spending a few weeks with his mother, Mrs. Alma Thornburgh, at Denton.

Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Young of Grayson were visiting their daughter , Mrs. Clyde Romans and family Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. Clement Glancy and daughter of Rush were the Wednesday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Romans.

Mrs. Bob Hogg and Mrs. Clyde Romans were shopping in Grayson, Friday.
