Information on Holy Rood Cemetery
Holy Rood Cemetery is situated on the east side of Wisconsin Avenue between W Place and the Whitehaven Pkwy, just above Georgetown, in Washington, DC. Holy Rood is a predominantly Irish Catholic cemetery associated with the parish of Holy Trinity Church in Georgetown. The Church purchased the first part of Holy Rood in 1832, and this part was originally referred to as the new or "upper" graveyard, distinguishing it from the older cemeteries on the church proper, some ten blocks below, down 35th Street. Additional parcels of land were added in 1853. Most of the burials took place from the mid 19th century into the early years of the 20th. As Holy Rood filled up, Mt. Olivet cemetery began to take precedence.

Holy Rood is no longer an operational cemetery. It is in very sad repair, although there has been an improvement in grounds keeping in the past few years. Numerous gravestones are destroyed or overturned. The gravestones identify just a fraction of the people buried at Holy Rood. The official records which identify all persons buried there can be found at Georgetown University's Lauinger Library at 37th and N Streets in Georgetown.
