Origins of the Garveys in Co Roscommon
Jon Garvey
As will be seen from the map taken from the census ordered in 1749 by Edward Synge, the Church of Ireland Bishop of Elphin, there were only 6 households of Garveys established in Co. Roscommon at that time. Parts of Sligo and Galway were also covered in this survey, but I have not had access to these.
Interestingly, the parishes represented are all on the line of the road which is now the N63 from Galway to Roscommon, and the N61 from Roscommon to Boyle.
These facts would seem to suggest that most, if not all, Roscommon Garveys came there from Co. Galway, rather than Co. Mayo. Compare this distribution with the map of the Garveys in the Griffith Valuation, which shows a further radiation from these centres.
