Canning Surname in Ireland
According to the historical account the name Canning is said to be both a surname
of many Ulster Plantation immigrants and a
variant Anglicization of the Irish name
O'Canannain. The Canning Ulster
Plantation immigrants were known to be centered in
County Londonderry, while the O'Canannains were
centered in County Donegal. The distribution
shown in the map matches up well with being a
combination of these two distributions.
It's interesting to note that there is a
separate group of Cannings in the area of County
Wexford - just as is seen in the Cannon distribution
map.
