Old Mission Mausoleum page of David G. Stuart's family history

The following rules and information were located June 2004 at the current Trustees office, Bank of America in Wichita, Kansas. The information is interesting in that it shows the lengths that Mr. Saxton and The Board of Control went to, to assure that this structure would be taken care of for the next several hundred years. TO THE CRYPT OWNERS OF OLD MISSION MAUSOLEUM:

It has become necessary to make some modifications in the operation of the Mausoleum and to restate the rules and restrictions for its use, which were laid down when the Mausoleum was built. These are for the benefit of all crypt owners and for the safety and convenience of all persons who use and go to the Mausoleum. Their purpose is to maintain and preserve Old Mission in the best possible way.

When Old Mission was established these rules were laid down, they are still in effect and we call them to your attention:

"The use of space in the Mausoleum is confined to human burial only and is regulated and defined by certain trust agreements and amendments thereto."

"In adopting the provisions, it is recognized that the interest of all owners of space is identical in seeing that the beauty of the building is maintained and that no person be al-lowed to do anything that will interfere with the rights or sensibilities of others. These rules are solely in the interest of the space owners, and the management therefore asks for your kind cooperation."

"Attention is directed to the fact that the beauty of the interior marble can be greatly impaired by carelessness and ignorance of certain elements that will permanently stain marble. A cigar or cigarette laid on the marble, and flowers, when placed against the marble may leave permanent stains. The use of tobacco in any form within the building, is therefore prohibited. Proper respect alone would require this. Flowers should be so placed that they will not touch the marble. Those who desire to place cut flowers before individual vaults can obtain from the management, vases of proper and uniform design for the purpose. When flowers or containers are placed in private rooms, a suitable mat should be provided to protect the floor from staining. The management reserves the right to remove, at any time, any flowers, decorations, vases or other articles which in their judgment impairs or detracts from the general harmony and beauty of the building and to adopt floral containers of a suitable uniformity."

"Wreaths of oak or magnolia leaves and many kinds of artificial flowers easily stain marble and should not be brought into the building. The management is of the opinion that the care of the building and its appearance would be bettered by placing only one floral decoration at a time before a crypt in the corridors. Floral containers or other articles should not be stood on the corridor floors in front of the vaults, crypts and private rooms. The floors of the corridors should be kept clear."

"It is not the desire of the management to place any restriction on the use of floral offerings at the time of funeral or entombment."

"Employees are directed to keep clean, at all times, all ledges, window sills, walls and floors."

"Employees are forbidden to use private rooms for the storage of utensils or other articles."

"No changes, alterations or additions will be permitted within the building unless first approved by the management, and any such changes, alterations or additions must conform to the material and design of the building, the same to be done by the management at a reasonable cost to the owner."

"All bodies must be properly embalmed before entombment. The management reserves the right to withhold the use of any vault until such preparation is made. Entombment will not be permitted unless written order is received from the owner or proper representative in event of owner being deceased. Proper certificate of death and burial permit must accompany all bodies before entombment. Vaults will be opened only by employees of the management and sealed by them after entombment. Only one body will be permitted entombed in one vault except in case where a mother and child are in one casket. No entombment will be permitted until full payment has been made and deed issued to purchaser."

"When entombment is made a reasonable charge will be made for opening, closing and sealing each vault. This charge covers the necessary attendance at the time, the making and preservation of all records in connection therewith and the use of the chapel in the building. Use of the chapel will be limited to one hour and notice of the time when service will be desired should be given as far in advance as possible."

"No resale or transfer of any vault or private room will be valid until it has first been approved by the management, and any deed or other instruments conveying such title shall be prepared by the trustee and a record of the same kept by the trustee for which the trustee is authorized to charge the sum of Five Dollars ($5.00)"

"The removal of a body from any vault to allow the sale or transfer of such vault or room will not be permitted without the consent of the management."

"Space owners should have their deeds recorded with the County Register of Deeds."

"The Mausoleum will be accessible only to space owners and their families. Children under ten years of age will not be admitted, unless accompanied by proper persons to take care of them. No dogs or other animals will be admitted."

"The management reserves the right to make any changes or additions to these rules, that, in its judgment, may become necessary."

The Board of Control, which represents and acts for all crypt owners, has established these additional rules:

l. All committal services are to be held in the chapel and not at other places in the Mausoleum.

2. All funeral flowers and wreaths brought to Old Mission shall be placed and left in the chapel area.

3. Employees and maintenance personnel will not tend or water plants or flowers placed by crypts or in the Mausoleum and will not render such services for any individual crypt owners.

4. All flowers and plants, when wilted, will be removed and disposed of by Mausoleum employees and maintenance personnel.

5. The Mausoleum will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, and from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sundays.

It is not necessary that the individual keys to the Mausoleum doors be returned by crypt owners who have such keys, but the door locks will be changed so that the Mausoleum will be open only at these specified hours. It is our desire and belief that these rules and arrangements will be in the best interest of all crypt owners and of the Old Mission Mausoleum. They will become effective September 1967.
