Lawrence "Larry" Giddens
On April 7, 2007 , Lawrence “Larry” Giddens, 86, passed away in Fresno . Larry was one of nine children born to Taylor and Marian May “Maimi” Giddens on May 25, 1920 in Cherryville , KS . In the late 1920's, Larry and his family moved to Ceres, where he attended Ceres High School and met his wife Wilma Lester. A few years later they moved to Eagle Rock, where he began his career with Lockheed Aircraft. Shortly thereafter, he went to work for Safeway Markets as a meat cutter. Throughout his career he was well respected and recognized for his dedication and hard work.
Larry was a man of God who cherished his family and friends. His dignity, humanity and compassion for others were above reproach. One of his most memorable attributes will always be his charismatic sense of humor and smile. During his life he enjoyed traveling, fishing, camping, horseback riding, and loved animals. As an active member of the community, Larry was involved in the Church of God ( Pasadena ), the optimist club, and the local meat cutters union 1167. A few of his accomplishments include building his first home, owning a business, and raising his family.
In 1985, Larry and Wilma moved to Clovis , where he is survived by his wife of 67 years Wilma Giddens, daughter and son-in-law Janet and John Lighthill, daughter and son-in-law Diane and Frank Kirkman , grandchildren Kevin Blackburn , Brian and Lynne Lighthill, Dori Blackburn , and great grandchildren Michael and Melanie Lighthill.
There will be a viewing on Wednesday April 11, 2007 at the Clovis Funeral Home from 4-7:00pm . A memorial service will be held on Thursday April 12, 2007 at the First Church of God in Fresno at 1:00 p.m. (In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to the First Church Christian Center in Fresno .)
