Note for:   Ralf Shelton,   1430 - 16 Jul 1497         Index

Individual Note:
Blomefield says he was son and heir of John Shelton and was only one quarter of a year old when his father died in 1430. A Fine Rolls writ was issued 1 April 1431 directing the escheator for Norfolk to take into the King's hands the lands late of John Shelton, Esq in Norfolk and Suffolk. Sir William Phelip was later given custody of these lands until the full age of Ralph, John's son and heir, together with Ralph's marriage. There
were actually several writs given to Sir William concerning Ralph's inheritance. He was 46 years old at his mother Margeret Alyngton's death. In 1432 the king presented to the church at Snoring Magna in Ralph's name since he was a minor. 19 November 1453 he Sir Miles Stapleton, and William Calthorp received a commission from the King to arrest several local men (Patent Rolls Hen VI vi p 167). In 1455 he presented to the church of Thirsford as its patron. In 1456 he presented to the church at Shelton as its patron. In 1459 Ralph presented to the church in Snoring Magna. June 26 1459 Ralph, Sir Thomas Descales, Thomas Brewse and the Sheriff of Norfolk were issued a warrant to arrest some local persons to bring before the King's chancery on charges of committing riots and congregating in Norfolk (Patent Rolls Hen VI vi p 496). 14 May 1462 he and other prominent Norfolk men were directed by the King to place watchmen and signals called "bekeyns" within the county of Norfolk for defense against the King's enemies (Patent Rolls Edw IV p 205). In 1460 he presented Master Thomas Marke as the rector of Hardwick (Blomefield v5 p222) - NRS also says that this Thomas was a kinsman to the Sheltons. In 1469 Ralph and Sir Thomas Brewse together presented to the church in Gunton. In 1470 he again presented to the church at Shelton as its patron. June 20 1470 Ralf and Richard Southwell among others were directed by the King to assay the lands of Sir George Neville of Latimer and to determine who Neville's heir might be (Patent Rolls Edw IV ii ).
1466-1475 he presented 3 rectors to the church in Hardwick. Ub 1489 he built Shelton church and rebuilt Shelton hall which previously had burned in a fire (Brown p 23). May 1 1484 and December 8 1484 King Richard III
directed Ralph, John Duke of Norfolk, John Duke of Suffolk, Thomas Earl of Surrey, John Lord Fitzwalter, Sir Henry Grey, Sir Edmund Bedingfield, Sir William Boleyn, William Paston, Richard Southwell, John Paston,
Robert Clere and others to array men at arms in Norfolk (Patent Rolls Ric III p 397,490). May 4 1484 Richard III pardoned William Warner of Hardwick for not appearing before justices to answer Ralf Shelton
concerning a debt of 40 s (Patent Rolls Ric III p 468). May 10 1485 he (along with othere) was directed by the King to arrest Thomas Hansard (Patent Rolls Ric III p 543). February 5 1485 Richard III made him a commissioner of the peace in Norfolk along with John Earl of Lincoln, William Calthorp, William Boleyn and Robert Clere (Patent Rolls Ric III p567). In 1487 he was High Sheriff for Norfolk and Suffolk. Sir Ralf was present at the coronation of Elizabeth of York. April 7 1487 he and John Duke of Suffolk, John Earl of Oxford, John Lord Fitzwalter, Sir William Knyvett, Richard Southwell, John Paston and William Boleyn, he was commissioned to array men at arms to guard the coast against the enemies of King Henry VII (Patent Rolls Hen VII i p 179). September 18 1487 he was again directed to protect the sea coast (Patent Rolls Hen VII i p213). In 1487 he had a grant from Henry VII of the custody and marriage of the body and lands of Ralf brother and heir of Robert Berney Esq of Gunton (Patent Rolls Hen VII i p 228 issued 11May 1488). That is the first time in the Patent Rolls that he is mentioned as Sir Ralph (or Ralf). In other rolls directing him to be commissioner of the peace March 12 1486 lists him as Ralph Shelton Esq
and other in August 17 1490 and May 9 1494 list him as Sir Ralph (Patent Rolls Hen VII i p 494). K.M. Brown says he was knighted in 1485 and that he was a Knight of the Garter in 1488 (p23). However, the Book of Dignities that lists all of the Knights of the Garter does not include Sir Ralph as having been a Knight of the Garter in 1488 or in the 10 years before and after that date (p736-737). The same Book of Dignities
does list him as a Knight of the Bath under the name of Ralph Sheldon having been vested in Nov 1487 on the coronation of Elizabeth of York, Queen of Henry VII (p758). NRS says that he was knighted 25 November 1485 and that he was High Sheriff of Norfolk in 1487. February 5 1491 he was given a grant along with Richard Southwell and others the hold the land and custody of Arthur son of Sir George Hopton (Patent Rolls Hen VII i p334). August 28 1490 he and John Duke of Suffolk, John Earl of Oxford, Sir Thomas Lovell, Sir William Boleyn, Richard Southwell and others were commissioned to raise men at arms and placed beacons "in the usual
places" to warn the people of the coming of the King's enemies (Patent Rolls Hen VII i p 349). May 12 1491 he and others were commissioned to muster men and if necessary to lead them again invaders led under "Charles calling himself King of France" (Patent Rolls Hen VII i p 357). He married Margeret daughter of Robert Clere of Ormesby by Elizabeth daugher of Sir Thomas Uvedale. He had John his son and heir, Ralf, Richard, Elizabeth, and Alice. February 1495 he and others were directed to be commissioner of the peace and of oyer and terminer (Patent Rolls Hen VII i p 31). He was later directed (with others) to assay the lordships, lands and manors of Sir Robert Chamberlain rebel and traitor (Patent Rolls Hen VII ii p 53). In the Patent Rolls Henry VII ii p 185 he is referred to as deceased. In 1492 he was executor of his mother-in-law Elizabeth Uvedale Clere's will and received a legacy from her (Blomefield v11 ). He was living in 1492 but was dead by 1500 for then Margeret
Shelton of Shelton, late the wife of Sir Rafe Shelton, Knt willed to be buried in Shelton chancel by her husband in a "tumbe which is ordeyned to that intent" (Archives of Epi Norwich probat 3 Dec 1500). In 1497 he presented to the church at Shelton as its patron . May 14 1496, November 12 1496, February 12 1497, February 10 1497 and May 8 1497 he was directed to be commissioner of the peace (Patent Rolls Hen VII ii p 651).
NRS says thathe died 16 July 1497, his will date 21 March 1497 and proved 13 May 1498. Ralf's Inquisition Post Mortem was issued 27 October 1498 which said he died 16 July last (1497) and that John his son and heir was aged 20 and Ralf's was said to have held numerous manors, lands and tenements in Norfolk and Suffolk.
Whitaker gives the date of Margeret's death as 16 January 1499 and was buried in Bury Abbey in Suffolk but this would be in conflict with both Blomefield and parish registers in Norwich. She says that the son
Richard Shelton was living in 1539 but there is no record of a wife or issue. The second son Ralf married Mary daughter and co-heir of Robert Brome co Norfolk. Their eldest son was Ralph Shelton of Brome Esq who
died in 1592 and was buried at Brome. Thorp Hall of Moring-Thorp had been purchased by the Shelton soon after 1412 and remained in the family until Sir Ralf sold it to the Garneyses (Blomefield v 5 p 290)
In 1480 the manor of Milden co Suffolk passed to Sir Ralf and remained in the family until sold by Ralph Shelton son of Sir John Shelton the younger. (Copinger i p 159)
