Individual Note: Blomefield notes that he was above 25 years old at his father's death in 1286 and in that same year had free warren allowed to them in erie. He settled lands in Illegh to maintain "divers lights in that church". In Harleian MSS Knights of Edward I, he is listed as serving 6 July 1277 (with his brother John) and went to Wales for the King 18 July 1277. He was summoned again 2 August 1282 to serve the King. He was ordered to defend the coast near Dunwich with horses and arms 3 August 1265. He served against the Scots 25 May 1268 and was summoned from Norfolk and Suffolk 24 June 130. He held 3 Knights fees for Burnt Illegh and 3 for Shelton, Osmundeston and Bedingham (p 247) In the Close Rolls dates 30 August 1295 issued by Edward I from Westminster, Robert Shelton, Robert Ufford and others were ordered to attend in person the keeping of the seacoast need Dunwich with horses and arms against foreign enemies should they come. 18 July 1277 in a writ issued from
Chester, he received a special protection for going to Wales on the King's service (Patent Rolls) In 1302 he had fees in Mundham, Shelton, Bedingham and Scole. In 1305 he and Isabel his wife held them with Burnt Illegh for life. In that year John Shelton his son and heir was of full age. Other sons Thomas and Henry were noted. Sir Robert died in 1305-1306.
Whitaker notes that in 1302 Sir Robert held Shelton, Barningham, Mundhaven, Scole and Brent Illegh. She names his wife as Isabella and says he had sons Alan, Ralph, Richard, John, Nicholas, Thomas, Hugh and Robert among other issue. Alan and Hugh are certainly in error. Blomefield V1 p131 says that Robert inherited Scole, Shelton and Bedingham from his father in 1286 The Inquistion Post Mortem for Sir Robert was issued 25 August 34 Edward I (1306) and lists his son John as his heir and of full age above 26 years or more. He held Brent Illeye in Suffolk and in Norfolk, Shelton (held with Isabel his wife), Bedingham and Osmundeston. His sons Henry and Thomas are mentioned. 25 August 1306 a writ was issued from the Fine Rolls for the escheator beyond Trent to take into the King's hands the lands late of Robert de Shelton, deceased, tenant in chief. They were later given to his son and heir John 12 November 1306 after he did homage for them.
