ANTIQUE BOTTLE CLUB - MELBOURNEPO Box 467, Brentford Square Melbourne 3131 |
1800s to early 1900s, including a comprehensive listing of beverage manufacturers & distributors. Whilst we believe this information is as accurate as possible, please understand it is an enormous task and may never be complete. Further time and effort could well have been used to search every Victorian newspaper to make this website even more informative but the logistics and cost prohibit this action. Undoubtedly this extensive search would have found countless more pubs and publicans, beverage makers, chemists, dairies and other companies and factories of the past, that may have operated for a short period of time but were not recorded in the directories. Unfortunately Victoria's Country Directories and other literature prior to 1902 are hard to come by and in many instances may not have ever existed. The information contained on this website has been gleaned from many sources. In particular we used the excellent reference book VICTORIAN THIRST by Ken Arnold of Bendigo (Victoria, Australia) with his permission. He and his friends did an excellent job of compiling information on Victorian manufacturers & distributors of aerated waters, cordials, hop and ginger beers, bitters and sarsaparilla consumed here in Victoria. Many of their sources - The Victorian Government Gazettes, published listings of registered trademarks, notes, feature stories and advertisments were extensively scanned for information, notices, markings etc. and may have contained errors or maybe were simply out of date at the time of printing. Hence some of the dates and information in VICTORIAN THIRST and on these webpages may vary from what actually happened, but we do suggest this information can still be used as a guide. Please be assured that it is not our intention to purposely cause friction. We simply to record information relevant to our hobby. We have chosen not to include the thousands of photographs of bottles and markings relating to each company featured in VICTORIAN THIRST. The task would be enormous, and never ending as new discoveries come to hand. Our volunteer webpage designers might pack up and go home. If you must see what logos and containers used by any company here in Victoria, then we heartily recommend you buy the book.
