WILLIAM DALRYMPLE KEATING

was born November 11, 1804 at Port Dalrymple, Tasmania (T.203)
(the first white child born in Northern Tasmania)
to James William KEATING and Ann (nee MIDDLEBROOKE)

William married Elizabeth Aldgate / Halgate (c.1808, d.1827-28) on March 16, 1824 at Launceston (T.764)
He died on August 11, 1884 aged 85 at Melton, Victoria (V.779)
Elizabeth Aldgate KEATING died sometime before 1829.
They had two sons: James KEATING born 27.3.1825 at Launceston (T.1949)
and William KEATING born 1.11.1826 at Launceston (T.2500)

William Dalrymple KEATING then married Hannah HODGETTS (1812-1891)
in JAN 9th, 1829 Launceston Tasmania (T.1310, IGI Batch Number:1860420)
Hannah HODGETTS was born on Apr 14 1808 in Norfolk Island, Australia
and was christened on Jun 18 1809 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
She died on Jun 23 1891 in Longford, Tasmania, Australia and was buried in Longford, Tasmania, Australia

In 1823 Captain Rolland was sent to explore the far west of Norfolk Plains (now Longford) and a district west (now Deloraine) to find suitable agricultural land. This expedition led to the opening up of the area and the naming of Mount Roland in honour of their leader and the renaming of the Western River to the Meander.
In 1825 Lieutenant Governor Arthur appointed Land Commissioners to assess the use of the land for future Crown Land leases and land grants.

To encourage development the laws were changed in the 1850s allowing land to be purchased for as little as one pound per acre. Settlement then grew rapidly despite the problems with bushrangers and transport, the latter being overcome when the State's first rail link between Launceston and Deloraine
was opened in 1872.		 In 1816 William D. Keating is on the Land/Stock Grants list
for Launceston and Dalrymple.
From 1824 to 1827 William D. Keating
is on the Court Orders List.
1834 he is on the Quit Rents Due list at Launceston.
1835 William D. Keating was on the Jury List,
and again in 1839, 1840 and 1842.

William and his wife Hannah came to Victoria
with at least ten of their children.
The ARGUS Newspaper (Sept. 1854, Melbourne) lists
a Mr and Mrs Keating and family sailed from Launceston
to Melbourne on board the LADY BIRD,
arriving on September 20th, 1854.
The master was T. Robertson.
This fits within the timeline as their son
Tasmania Dalrymple KEATING was born at Westbury in 1852
and their son Edward Simmonds KEATING
was born in Melbourne in 1855.

1. Thomas KEATING, born on 16.5.1830 at Launceston (T.3586) - parents probably William Dalrymple and Hannah Keating.
Some records seem to indicate that Thomas may have been born in 1828, and christened on 16/5/1829.
He died in 1894 aged 64 at Deloraine.Tas (T.116)
Thomas married Susanna Miller (1831-1908) in 1849 at Westbury,Tas (T.732)
Their children: Isabella Susanna (1850-1930), William Dalrymple (1852), Thomas (1854-1922),
un-named female (1857), Emma Jane (1857), James John (1859-1861), Fanny Matilda (1861), Leslie (Paddy),
Donald, Audrey, Henry Samuel (1863-1908), Frederick George (1866-1945) and Jemima Maria (1868-1953)
2. John KEATING born to William Dalrymple and Hannah Keating in Tasmania (baptised 7.8.1831)
and died 4.12.1889 aged 58 at Woodend (V.19390)
John married Anne Boxhall in 1858 at Longford (T.623). She died sometime before 1866
He then married Fanny WOOD in 1866 (V.2778)

3. Maryann KEATING, born 13.3.1833, baptised 18.3.1833, to William Dalrymple and Hannah Keating
She married 21 APR 1854 at Launceston to Edward SIMMONDS (1827)
Their children:
John (Clement) Simmonds was born 1855 at Sandhurst, Bendigo (V.2510)
We believe he married Mary Jane Dennis in 1873 at Sandhurst (V.2296)
and had a son John Clement Simmonds in 1875 at Sandhurst (V.25558)
William Dalrymple Simmonds was born 1858 at Long Gully, Bendigo (V.19320)
We believe he married Margaret McCallum Robertson in 1885 at Sandhurst (V.4098)
Edward Simmonds was born 1862 at Sandhurst, Bendigo (V.10805)
Emily Jane Stewart Simmonds was born 1870 at Sandhurst, Bendigo (V.4855) and died in 1893 at Bendigo (V.672)
She had a daughter Elsie Kathleen in 1893 (V.1111)
Evelyne Henrietta Simmonds was born 1871 at Spargo (V.5261)
She married Harry Ingram Stirling in 1901 (V.6419)
4. Susannah KEATING, baptised 11.12.1835 to Wm Dalrymple and Hannah Keating,
Christening: 11 JAN 1836 at Longford (T.7356)
She married Charles Miller 02 MAY 1854 Launceston, Tasmania
Susannah Miller died in 1855 aged 20 in Melbourne (V.4206)
Their daughter Susanna was born in 1855 in Melbourne (V.6222) and died 6 weeks later (V.4303)
5. Sarah KEATING, baptised 18.8.1836 to Wm Dalrymple and Hannah Keating at Longford (T.7391)
6. Elizabeth KEATING, baptised May 4th, 1838 to Wm Dalrymple and Hannah Keating at Longford (T.9098)
We are almost sure she married Thomas Ballard in 1856 (V.3873 Please check this reference).

She married John Evans and had a son Stanley Dalrymple EVANS.
Maria EVANS (nee Keating) died in 1909 aged 68 at Woodend
9. Eliza KEATING, Birth: 08 SEP 1841 Cressy, Tasmania to Wm Dalrymple and Hannah Keating (T719)
Baptised 8.9.1841 and died in 1906 aged 68 in E.MELB (V.10131)
