OH, THOSE PESKY NOVELS...

From the newspaper "The Review"
of Richibucto, Kent County, New Brunswick

Transcription by Shelley Cerna

"June 18/1891 - - Clara Wortmand, the young girl who had been missing from her home in Salisbury since June 1st, was discovered on Friday last dressed in male attire and working as a farm hand on the farm of Mr. Byron McLeod, two miles from Sussex. The girl's family say that the cause of her strange course is from excessive novel reading."

"SUSIE LEE
DONE FELL IN LOVE"
Susie Lee done fell in love;
She planned to marry Joe.
She was so happy 'bout it all
She told her Pappy so.
Pappy told her, "Susie, gal,
you'll have to find another
I'd just as soon your ma don't know,
but Joe is your half-brother."

So Susie put aside her Joe
and planned to marry Will,
but after telling Pappy this,
he said, "There's trouble still.
You can't marry Will, my gal,
and please don't tell your mother,
but Will and Joe and several more
I know, is your half-brother".

But Mama knew and said, "My child,
just do what makes you happy
marry Will or marry Joe
You ain't no kin to Pappy".

"Heredity"
I saw a duck the other day.
It had the feet of my Aunt Fay.
Then it walked, was heading south.
It waddled like my Uncle Ralph.

And when it turned, I must propose,
Its bill was formed like Aunt Jane's nose.
I thought, "Oh, no! It's just my luck,
Someday I'll look just like a duck!"

I sobbed to Mom about my fears,
And she said, "Honey, dry your tears.
You look like me, so walk with pride.
Those folks are all from Daddy's side!

A Case of Mistaken Identity

Those of you who happened to notice this little cherub in the photo collection...
will know that it's Uncle Irven, Grandpa Fred's oldest son, in 1908...
What you don't know is that Uncle Irven is forever immortalized in the 1910 U.S. census as a girl! Look at an exact copy of the census ...

Perhaps he was still wearing dresses as a four-year old and who could blame the census taker...?

An Historic Connection

Ever hear the family story that Great-Grandpa John knew or had contact with the great Alexander Graham Bell? I always assumed that if it was true, it was because Great-Grandpa John was a telegrapher. You know... early telecommunications, telegraph wires, something in common, etc., etc. Well... one of Great-Grandpa John's sisters was a deaf mute and both before and after he became famous for the invention of the telephone, Alexander Graham Bell taught deaf people to speak (for those of you who remember your high school English classes, it was he who recommended that Annie Sullivan teach Helen Keller).

One of Great-Grandpa John's older sisters (he had 6 of them!), Phyllis McLeod, never married and lived with family all of her 92 years. The 1901 Canadian Census (she was 60 years old at that time) lists her as being "Def and Dumb" (that census taker should have studied harder in his English classes!).

Since Great-Grandpa John and Great-Grandma Abbie lived in Boston, Massachusetts during the same period as Mr. Bell, I have a hunch that this may be where the connection comes in... what do you think?
