Donald H. McLeod

It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of Donald Hector McLeod on July 15, 2004. Left to mourn are his loving wife of fifty-eight years, Josephine; his son, Donald James and Brenda his wife and their children, Chris and Lindsay; his daughter, Lesley Joanne and Allan Bens her husband and their daughter Katrina. Also surviving are his sisters, Hazel Jourdin and Mildred Derrick of Saskatoon, and his dearly loved younger brother, George of Calgary. Don was born in Saskatoon in 1923, the second son of Ira and Josie McLeod. He graduated from Nutana Collegiate in 1941 and worked as a telegrapher until he joined the Royal Canadian Air Forces in 1942. He attained the rank of Flying Officer, was sent overseas and flew in the Transport Command for eighteen months. After the end of World War II he returned to Canada and married Josephine M. Wegren, who had also served in the RCAF. Don attended the University of Saskatchewan and graduated with a B. Sc. in Electrical Engineering in the spring of 1950. His first engineering position was with Defense Construction. He subsequently accepted a position with Manitoba Hydro and was the engineer in charge of the construction of power generation plants in Selkirk and Brandon, MB. In 1960, he joined the Winnipeg architectural firm of Ward, Macdonald and Partners and managed their Brandon office. He became a partner of this firm and continued to work with them until 1975. He then returned to Saskatoon and undertook extensive consulting engineering with White and Associates. He retired from engineering in 1990. Don always participated fully in the communities in which he lived and was an active member of the Rotary and Kiwanis clubs and the Presbyterian church. He loved woodworking and his garden, and he volunteered at the Veterans' Home. He also enjoyed travel in North America and abroad. Don especially relished having all his family around him. He was a devoted husband and took great pride in his children and his grandchildren. He has given us a legacy of love and will always be remembered with a smile. We would like to thank the Palliative Care Units of the Saskatoon Health Region and of St. Paul's Hospital for their compassion and assistance. Memorial donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit, St. Paul's Hospital, 1702 - 20th Street West, Saskatoon, SK S7M 0Z9. A Service of Remembrance will be held Wednesday, July 21, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, 436 Spadina Crescent East with Reverend Annabelle Wallace officiating. Private interment to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Veterans' Section. Arrangements are entrusted to Larry Matisho of McKague's Funeral Chapel (664-3131).
