A letter to the city of Emmerich


Prof. Francisco G. Emmerich established contact with the city of Emmerich's mayor, who routed the contact to a local newspaper called NRZ - NEUE RHEIN ZEITUNG. From there, Mrs. Corinna Schmidt wrote an article regarding our First National Meeting and faxed him a copy of that.
After the meeting, Prof. Francisco sent to Mrs. Corinna the letter below, and also some pictures of the Meeting, in order for her to prepare another article and publish it.

Dear Mrs. Schmidt
First of all we would like to inform that we received your fax of January 8th, 1999 with great satisfaction. The news that went out in the leading newspaper of the city of Emmerich about the Emmerich Family First National Meeting in Brazil was emphasized and displayed in a poster during the Meeting as it will be commented later.
We think that our meeting was very successful. We had the participation of 400 people, which was a good surprise for us, considering that it was a first meeting. We enjoyed very much the opportunity to know many people and part of the history of our family. We had time to talk; to pray; to hear, play and sing popular music; and to
eat and drink among other things. The following decisions were taken at the end of the meeting:

    1. Creation of an Association of the Emmerich Family in Brazil. (our cousin, Newton Emmerich, as the general co-ordinator of the First Meeting,will be one of the persons chairing the creation of this
      Association);
    2. Designation of a committee of four people (Enos Emmerich Jr., Roland Emmerich Dutra, Wesley Emmerich and Francisco G. Emmerich) to carry out a general study of the Emmerich family genealogy in Brazil,
      which aims to obtain our general family tree.
    3. Chose of the city of Nova Friburgo (in the state of Rio de Janeiro) as the headquarters of our next meeting (2nd), which will be at the end of January of 2000.

The two first pictures that we are enclosing concern the poster entitled "Divulga do nosso encontro na Alemanha na cidade de Emmerich", which means: Divulgation of our encounter in Germany in the city of Emmerich. We showed your fax, the news as appeared in NRZ -"NEUE RHEIN ZEITUNG" and the map of Germany with the Rhine region where the city of Emmerich appears.
The person that appears alone in one of these pictures is Enos Emmerich Jr., which was one of the persons that talked about part of the Emmerich family genealogy in Brazil. In the other picture, I (Francisco G. Emmerich) am appearing with my "cousin" Enos. I am putting the word cousin among quotation marks because only now we will start to make a general study of the Emmerich family genealogy in Brazil (Decision 2, above) , and we hope do discover our real
genealogical links.
Concerning your question if there is some links of the Emmerich in Brazil and the city of Emmerich, I think only with the developing of our work we could give you a more positive answer, but we have already the following information:

The first Emmerich family to emigrate from Germany to Brazil was of Jonas Emmerich (from Hessen). They came in
the ship "Argus" (Den Helder port 24Jun1823), arrived in Brazil (Rio de Janeiro) in 13Jan1824.
The second Emmerich family to emigrate from Germany to Brazil was Heinrich Emmerich (from Hessen - Nidda). They came in the ship "Caroline", arrived in 1824. These families lived in the state of Rio de Janeiro (Nova Friburgo) and the state of Minas Gerais (Alto Jequitiba). More information about the Emmerich family in the world

In the third and fourth photo Newton Emmerich, the general co-ordinator appears respectively alone and together with members of the organizing committee (Dioney, Abel and Maria Alice) during the opening session.
In the fifth photo it can be observed Roland Emmerich Dutra and Wesley Emmerich, which also talked about the family genealogy. We are enclosing more pictures where you can observe the people in several parts of the meeting. I think these photos will be interesting to observe how these Brazilians (German descendants) have evolved in these last 175 years. We would appreciate very much if in the future, maybe in the next meeting, we could have the participation of our German relatives in the meeting. For sure, we will send you in advance the formal invitation with details of date, etc.
We also would like to mention that there is a possibility that one of us will go to visit Germany this year and the city of Emmerich in particular. If this will come true, we will inform you.
