Family Memorial of Isaac and Mary Petts

Family Memorial of Isaac and Mary Petts

As Secretary of the Baptist Church in Crich, I have observed on many occasions the memorial that exists in our church to Hannah and her mother Mary. It is very clear from our old Minute books that the family were Baptists, including Isaac, as there are numerous mentions of the PETTS name in those old church records.

Isaac Petts was a Monumental Stone Mason of some undoubted skill. He was also the Mason responsible for the monument called Crich Cross. A local historian, Geoffery Dawes, writes "The south-north routes - usually following raised ground - were intersected east-west at Crich Cross, the old focus of communications in the village. In 1857 the cross, listed as a market-cross, was then stated to be ancient. It was described by a local poetess, Ann Perry, of that time, as an old blackened wooden cross. That Cross was taken down and replaced, in 1871, by the present-day stone cross which was designed and masoned by a local man, Isaac Petts - to whom there is a memorial in Crich Churchyard."

ALSO OF MARY PETTS ....?

..........................................

I need to return to check the transcription for both Daniel and his wife, who I think was called Mary. The word after Daniel's name puzzled me, but having looked at the photograph again, I believe it says 'Engraver', which could be a word partly describing his occupation. I am sure that he was a Stonemason. There were three 'Daniel' Petts on the 1841 Census for Crich Parish. One a farmer, then aged 70, presumably his son, also called Daniel, aged 20, a Stonemason, and the Daniel Petts for whom the above memorial is his last earthly resting place. This Daniel, given on the 1841 Census as a Stonemason, due to the 1841 Census 'rounding' his age was given on the census as 35, I believe he was approximately 38 years old in 1841. There is also a Marriage recorded at Crich on 1st December 1822 for a Daniel Petts (Stonemason) of Chadwick Nick (near Fritchley), who married a Mary Storer of Crich. Hence I believe that the above memorial is theirs. I hope to complete the transcription as soon as possible.
