Sarah Barber and George Reynolds
Sarah Barber, daughter of George and Margaret (Watkins) Barber, was
born ca. 1780 in Wilkes County, Georgia. She married George Elijah
Reynolds, son of Spencer Reynolds, ca. 1799 in Oglethorpe County,
Georgia. It is not known when Sarah and her husband died. Their known

SAN ANGELO TX -- Paul W Johnson Sr passed away Friday, Dec 7,
2007 in a local hospital at the age of 92.
Funeral service will be a 10 a.m. Monday, Dec 12, in Johnson's Funeral
Home Chapel with the Rev. John Joiner officiating. Burial will follow in
Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Johnson was born Nov 30, 1915, in Hamlin to Eva and E W Johnson.
After graduating from Sul Ross, he taught school for two years in
Sylvester and Trent before going to work for the Santa Fe Railroad. He
worked for the railroad for 34 years, retiring in 1976 at the age of 61.
He was a member of Park Heights Baptist Church, later becoming the
Heights, since 1950. He also belonged to Masonic Lodge 1260 and was a
32nd Degree Scottish Mason. He was married to Melbe McHaney in 1940.
They had four children and were happily married until her death in 1964.
He then married the second love of his life, Syree Fox, and they were
married until her death in 2006.
Our dad had a full and blessed life. He enjoyed gardening, watching ball
games, his bulldogs, RVing ad traveling. He was a very strong Christian.
Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by stepson Ronnie Fox and his brother
Lewis Johnson.
He is survived by his sons Wally and wife Kay Johnson of Rankin and David
Mack and wife Lynn Johnson of San Angelo; daughters Sandra and husband
John Holmes of Brownwood, and Jan and husband Henri Adams of San Angelo;
stepdaughter Kay and husband Bill Good; daughter-in-law Doris Fox; nine
grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a brother Leonard and wife

Two books, Interwoven, A Pioneer Chronicle by Sallie
Reynolds Matthews, published in 1936, and Rennolds-Reynolds
Family Roster by Stephen F. Tillman, published in 1959, state
that the parents of Barber Watkins Reynolds were Benjamin Franklin
Reynolds -- Sarah Barber.
The will of George Barber, Sr., and his wife Margaret (Watkins)
Barber, on pages 8-11 of this genealogy, prove that the parents of Barber
Watkins Reynolds were George Reynolds and Sarah Barber, not Benjamin
Franklin Reynolds.
Sallie Reynolds Matthews was the daughter of Barber Watkins Reynolds.
She states in Interwoven that her father and Sam R. Barber of
Weatherford, Texas were double first cousins. Samuel Reynolds Barber was
the son of George Barber Jr. and his wife Elizabeth Reynolds. George
Barber and Sarah Barber were brother and sister, and George Reynolds and
Elizabeth Reynolds were brother and sister. "Watt" Reynolds and Sam R.
Barber were double first cousins, but Watt's father was George Reynolds,
and not Benjamin Franklin Reynolds. In 1975, before my book was
published, I called Watkins Reynolds Matthews and asked him if he had
a Bible record stating that his ancestors were Benjamin Franklin
Reynolds and Sallie Barber. He did not. I had no idea at the time that
he was a prominent rancher.
Barber Watkins Reynolds was the first commissioner of Buchanan County,
Texas (now Stephens County)
The Reynolds-Matthews family founded the first Presbyterian Church in
Albany, Texas, also a Presbyterian Orphanage.
George Thomas Reynolds and William David Reynolds were among the
founders of the first National Bank of Albany, Texas, and George was the
founder of First National Bank in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He also was a
Confederate Civil War veteran.
Glenn Reynolds was the first sheriff of Throckmorton County, Texas, later
was sheriff of Gila County, Arizona. He was killed by his prisoners
while he was transporting them to another place. One of his prisoners
was the Apache Kid.
Samuel Pierce Newcomb was the first clerk of Buchanan County, Texas,
was also a school teacher and surveyor.
John Alexander Matthews, commissioner of Shackelford County, Texas,
became Judge in Throckmorton County in 1894.

Rev. John Brown in 1880, divorced in 1895. John M. Larn was a
sheriff, a cattle rustler and a horse thief. He was killed 24
June 1878 in the Albany, Texas jail by a vigilante committe,
believed to be led by some of the Reynolds brothers.61 One rumor
also named John A. Matthews, the husband of Sallie Reynolds
Matthews and a brother-in-law of Larn, which Matthews denied.
Another rumor named Mart Hoover, another brother-in-law of Larn.
His last name was spelled Laren on the 1860 census of Alabama.
John Brown was a Presbyterian minister in Albany and later Fall
River, Massachusetts. Mary was not happy in Massachusetts or
with John Brown, and they were divorced by 1895. Rev Brown
published a book in 1896 called "Twenty-Five Years a Parson in
the Wild West" a thinly disguised autobiography. One chapter is
entitled "The Unlucky Ranch" dealing with the John Larn
property.
Mary Jane has been quoted as remarking of her two husbands: "I married a
cow thief the first time, and a preacher the second, and I do believe the
cow thief was the best man."
"Fearing that Selman might collect a party large enough to rescue Larn,
Glenn Reynolds, with Bill Howsley and his posse, started to Albany, making
the trip in less than three hours. Here they joined the vigilante chief,
the sheriff, his deputies, and other members of the possse that had
brought in Larn. Around midnight, nine men left the rendezvous, quietly
approaching the jail from behind, unseen by Mary, who kept watch from the
second-floor window of the rooming house. The men crept up to the picket
house in which twelve men were chained through their manacles from wall to
wall, with iron shackles on their ankles, lyingon blanket pallets, side by
side. Hurricane Bill, strangely enough, lay next to John Larn. Alert to
the familier tramp of approaching vigilantes and afraid it was he who
would be shot, he turned his face to the wall, as did the man on Larn's
other side. The nine vigilantes chosen to enter the jail (one had cast a
dissenting vote but nonetheless went in) had placed bandanas over the
lower part of their faces and wore long, yellow range slickers so as not
be be recognized by the other prisoners or by the four guards, who they
disarmed and sent away. They strode through the door, and John Larn stood
up to face them. The masked leader, very tall and straight, said, "In
recognition of your better qualities, we are not going to hang yu." Larn
called them cowards and lifted his chin in defiance. A fusillade rang out
and Larn fell to the floor.

"The identities of the men who appeared at the jail are not known,
though it is reasonable to assume that most of them, at least, had been
with the posses who seized Larn and went after Selman. Bill Howsley, a
Reynolds hand, admitted to Phin Reynolds that he was there and hinted as
to the identity of the leader. "Bill Howsley told me that there were nine
men in the bunch that killed Larn and that he was with them. He said they
wore slickers and bandanas around their forheard.He said the leader was a
tall man, and I said 'I Guess that he was Tom Merrill, who worked for the
Horse Shoes on the Double Fountain Fork.' He said, 'No, it was not him,' and
left the impression it was one of my brothers."
