Chapter 8
George Barber, Jr.
George Barber Jr, born 1786 in Wilkes County, Georgia, was the youngest
child of George and Margaret (Watkins) Barber. He married Elizabeth
Reynolds 11 May 1806 in Clarke County, Georgia. Elizabeth was the daughter
of Spencer Reynolds.
War of 1812 Service of George Barber Jr.
The State of Texas ) On this the 1st day of July A. D. one
County of Shelby ) thousand eight hundred and fifty one, personally
appeared before me a Justice of the Peace,
within and for the county and state aforesaid George Barber, aged sixty
five years, a resident citizen of the County of Shelby in the State of
Texas, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the
identical George Barber who was a private in the Company Commanded by
Captain William Ford in ____ Regiment of Georgia Troops (infantry)
commanded first by an officer who died in camp (and whose name is not now
recollected) and afterward said regiment was commanded by Col. Newman
under General Floyd in the war with Great Britain declared by the United
States on the 13 June 1812, that he volunteered in Lexington, Oglethorpe
County, Georgia, on or about the first of September A. D. 1813, for the
term of six months and continued in actual service for the term of six
months and was honorably discharged at Lexington, Oglethorpe County in the
State of Georgia on or about the first day of March A. D. 1814, as will
appear by the Muster Rolls of said company. He declares that he received
his pay for the full six months, but does not recollect whether or not
any written discharge was given to him if it was not it was only from
neglect and not from any other cause, and if it was given it has long
since been lost.
He makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the bounty land to
which he may be entitled under the act granting bounty land to certain
officers and soldiers who have been in the Military service of the United
States prior September 28th, A. D. 1850.

hereby certify that I believe the said George Barber to be the identical
man who served as aforesaid and that he is of the age above stated.

witness and for the County and State aforesaid Elizabeth Barber aged 66
years a resident of Nacogdoches County in the State of Texas who being
Sworn according to law declares that she is the widow of George Barber
deceased who was a private in the Company Commanded by Captain Ford in
the Georgia Regiment of Militia men Commanded by General Floyd in the War
of 1812 against the Creek Indians. That her said husband volunteered at
Lexington, Oglethorpe County, Georgia on or about the 7th day of August
A. D. 1813 for the term of six months and was honorably discharged at
Fort Hawkins on the first day of February A. D. 1814-- as will appear by
the Muster rolls of Said Company as the discharge wa forwarded to the
Department with a former declaration he made out by himself in his
lifetime and recieved a land Warrant for 80 acres No. 35 527. She
further states that she was married to the said George Barber in Clarke
County, Georgia on the 11th day of May A. D. 1806 by one Alex Hall a
Justice of the Peace for Clark County, Georgia and that her name before
her said marriage was Elizabeth Reynolds and that she has no children
under the age of 21 years. Surviving that her said husband died at his
residence in Shelby County, Texas on the 2nd day of July A. D. 1854 and that
she is now a widow at the date of executing this her declaration for the
purpose of obtaining the Bounty land to which she may be entitled under the
act approved March 3d, 1855.

Elizabeth was living in 1860 in Nacogdoches County, Texas with her
daughter, Mrs. Benjamin Turner Hudman.

Center. They lived in Atlanta, Georgia their entire lives. William
was born 1805. They apparently both died before 1870.

2. Samuel Reynolds Barber, born 1809-1810, Oglethorpe County, Ga.,
married Adaline Flake Perry ca. 1829. Samuel was first treasurer of
Parker County, Texas, and he also signed a petition for that county's
formation.62 Samuel died 1881, buried Barber Mountain near Mineral
Wells Texas. Adaline was the sister of General William Flake Perry.

married Sarah Ann Amanda Smith 1859. (see chapter 10)
C. Solomon P. Barber, born 9 November 1837, Chambers County, Alabama,
died 5 August 1856, buried Dean Cemetery, Weatherford, Texas.
D. Samuel C. Barber, born 31 October 1839, Chambers County, Alabama,
died 20 February 1857, buried in same grave with his brother
Solomon.64
E. Olevia Adeline Barber, born 4 March 1842, Chambers County,
Alabama, married Hiram Hampton McLean 24 Jan 1860, Palo Pinto
County, Texas, died 13 October 1880, Weatherford, Parker County,
Texas. H. H. McLean was born 29 March 1835, Fayette County,
Georgia, died 8 January 1869 in Weatherford, Parker County,
Texas. He was a lawyer, created his own cavalry regiment in
the Civil War,(34th Texas Cavalry) and eventually rose to the
rank of Lt. and Captain. He was medically discharged in 1863 due
to TB. New information from Richard McLean 65 Olevia and Hiram
are buried at Dean Cemetery, Weatherford, Parker County, TX.

TX, died 8 March 1944. Georgia's body was removed by Cook
Funeral Home of Austin, Texas to San Benito Twp., Cameron
Co. TX. She married Samuel Spears 23 Dec 1880, Throckmorton
Co. TX.. He was born 22 July 1856, Spearsville, Union
Parish, LA, died 25 Nov 1928 in San Benito Twp, Cameron Co.
Tx, buried 30 Nov 1928 in Mount Meta Cemetery. Was Georgia's
middle name Emily? Samuel was the son of William L. Spears
and Lucinda M. Cobb. Grandfather was Alexander Spears.
Samuel Spears was a county surveyer at 24 years of age, was
later a district and county clerk, and later still a judge.

may have been married to a Kathryn earlier, according

Dear Miss Johns:
Your letter of February 18 was forwarded to us from the office of the
City Clerk.
The "Johns Mansion" was on the west side of Congress Avenue at the
corner of 7th and Lavaca streets. The property, lots 4, 5, and 6,
Block 81, was purchased from Thomas W. Ward in 1873. major Clement
Reed (or Read or Reade) Johns built his fourteen room house in 1874.
Major Johns died in 1886. His widow, Amanda F. Durham Johns lived in
the family home until it was sold in 1899 to Albert Sidney Burleson.
We would be glad to show you pictures of the interesting old house,
if you can come by the library some time when you are in Austin.
A short biographical sketch of Major Clement Reed Johns appears in
the Handbook of Texas, published by the Texas State Historical
Association in 1952. This title and other bibliographical references
listed there are available to you in the San Antonio Public Library.

Question of Legality of Electing Judge Arises at Brownsville
Brownsville, Tex., Jan 2 - The special term of the District Court
which was ordered by District Judge W. B. Hopkins at the last regular
session of the court convened here today. Twenty-six members of the
Brownsville bar were present and Samuel Spears of San Benito was
elected as the special judge to preside at the term. Some question as
to the legality of electing a special term of the court arose and
after much discussion a committee of five was appointed to report
Wednesday morning on the matter when it was agreed that if the
proceeding was found not to be legal that the proper steps will be
taken and court would adjourn.

County, TX. He was a lawyer and a judge. His sister Lutie

his home with the Barber Watkins Reynolds family for several years.
He married Nancy Jane Frans, October 1870. Flake Barber died
10 January 1929, Floyd County, Texas.66

family near Rocky Ford, Colorado in 1874, where he was a school
teacher for the younger Reynolds children. When most of the
Reynolds family moved back to Texas in November 1875, Hiram Barber
and Glenn Reynolds went prospecting for gold in Colorado.67

3. Elizabeth Barber, born about 1812, married Burwell H. Hambrick.
Burwell owned the first cotton gin in Van Zandt County. The site is
on the tract of land known as the old "Cherokee Battleground," on
which the last battle of with the Cherokee Indian was fought and
where Chief Bowles was killed. Burwell later moved to Tyler, Texas
where he, George Humphry and Jim Douglas opened a cotton thread mill
with 1,200 spindles located two blocks north of the town square. In
1868 the thread mill was totally destroyed by fire. No insurance was
carried and Burwell never recovered from the loss and died leaving a
small estate. Burwell is buried in or near Tyler, and his wife,
Elizabeth, is buried on the Hambrick Estate. Their children:

"CANYON - Jack Warren, 72, died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, in Amarillo.
Services will be at 2 pm Friday in Trinity Fellowship, North Auditorium,
with Phil Mercado, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens
Cemetery by Brooks Funeral Directors.
Mr Warren was born Oct 4 1928 in Post to Belva C Hudman and Henry H
Warren. He was employed at the Verterans Hospital in Amarillo for 15
years and retired from West Texas State University in Canyon after 22
years of service.
He married Leeora Sutton on April 7, 1951, in Carlsbad, NM. He was
preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, a sister and a son,
Douglas.
Survivors include his wife, Leeora Warren of the home; four daughters,
Beth Mathews and her husband, Ron, of Amarillo, Joyce Smith and her
husband, Gary, Beverly King and her husband, Kent, and Linda Mowry, all
of Canyon; three grandsons, Bret Mowry and his wife, Beth, Jay Mowery and
Donnie Smith; three granddaughters, Heather vonOsinski and her husband,
Marc, Jennifer Trook and her husband, Rob, and Amy Vinyard and her
husband, Landon; three great-great grandchidren, Jada and Jensen
vonOsinski and Brie Mowry.

"Clarence O Smith Rites Wednesday
Clarence O Smith, Big Spring resdient for 43 years, died early Monday
moring in a Dallas hospital. He ws 71.
Funeral will be held at 2 pm Wednesday in the Nalley-Pickel Rosewood
Chapel, the Rev Marshall Stewart, pastor of the Church of the Nazarene in
Anson, officiating. Burial will be in City Cemetery.
Mr Smith was born Feb 7 1896 in Alto. Following service in World War I,
he returend to marry Miss Enid Cole on May 17, 1918 in Idabel, Okla. They
moved to Big Spring in 1924 from Broken Bow, OKla. He was a retired
carpenter.
Survivors are his wife; one son, Vernon Smith, Dallas; one daughter, Mrs
Catherine WIlliams, Dallas; four sisters, Mrs Claude Pierce and Mrs Lynn
Richardson, Madill, Okla., Mrs Evie Hutchinson, Broken Bow, Okla, Mrs
Frank Henderson, Colton, Calif; one brother, Ben Smith, Big Spring, four

"Service for John Paul Turner, 89, of Brownfield will be 2:00 pm,
Wednesday, December 26, 2007, at the First United Methodist Church with
Rev. Charles Addington officiating. Burial will follow in Terry County
Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Brownfield Funeral Home.
Paul passed away Thursday, December 20, 2007 at his home in Brownfield.
He was born May 16, 1918 in Broken Bow OK to Joseph and Emma Turner. He
and his family moved to Big Spring in 1930. He attended Big Spring
schools. He married Bobbye Thompson June 6, 1939 in Big Spring, Texas.
They moved to Brownfield in 1954. Paul ran Foster Gin from 1962 until it
closed in 1993. He farmed for over 53 years, retiring in 2000. He was a
Mason, Shriner and a member of First United Methodist Church. Paul is
preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Martha Burgner, and brother,
Jim Turner and a grandson, Paul Glenn Grimes. family and friends will be
pallbearers.
Paul is survived by his wife Bobbye of brownfield; three daughters, Bobbye
Jo Floyd and husband Ronnie, Paula Grimes of Abilene and Cheryl Purtell of
Lubbock; three sisters, Clote Reynolds of Houston, Edwina Stewart and
Geneva Kiser and her husband Bob of Abilene; a brother, Delmer Turner of
Big Spring; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
There will be viewing on Monday, December 24th at the funeral home from
10 am - 2 pm. He will be in state Wednesday, December 26th from 8 am -
Noon."
