Bob

Bob, I did miss your message.  Sorry.  I am astounded at the number of former
and current Terre Hauteans who are exchanging messages.  I stay in close
touch in Indy and have just opened a law office there after all these years
in Dave McNamar's firm.  You can check us out at
www.indianapolis-lawyers.com, check insurance and you will see my/our banner.
You can go to my web page from there.

I am sending a cc of this to Bob Lebowitz who is a professor of medicine at
Harvard, and Dave who, of course, practices law in Indy.  We have a case
together now in Marion County.

I also have cases in TH with a firm there, and maintain my practice here.
And, I have a daughter, Tory, graduating from IU this May with a degree in
musice.  My son, Guy (No. 4) is a junior at UC Dave.  My folks are retired in
TH, Mom 89 and Dad 90.  They are quite content.  I see them several times a
year.

Hope all is well.  Keep in touch.

By the way, four of us guys played in an Olympic Club golf tourney together a
year ago in the first all Terre Haute foursome to every play that
championship course:  Dave McNamar, Charlie Hall (Tech), Jim Fuller (Davis
Park), and me.  Golf history in the making!

Guy,

No, even stranger than that. My undergrad degree at Harvard was in Chemistry. But, I was probably the worst Chemist Harvard ever turned out so, not seeing a Nobel in my future and having a little stronger inclination on the math side anyway, I  decided to go to MIT's business school. I got the regular Masters but fell in love with OR (Operations Research, a kind of applied math) so I stayed on and got my PhD from MIT in Feb '69. But, then, instead of teaching. I joined BBDO in New York. I was almost ready to become a Prof of Finance at UCLA when some headhunters came along and wined & dined me in NYC. It was the first time in my life that someone actually wanted to hire ME. Work, for me, was what you got hanging out on construction sites, casually lifting small trucks off the ground as a demo, waiting till someone said 'heh, you, kid. Wanna work?'

Anyway, I loved it there. Started out at 46th and Madison in '68, building mathmatical models of various marketing processes. Ended up as Chairman of BBDO Europe, Mid-East and Africa for almost 10 years. The first Terre Hautean I saw in 25 years was Don Kelley  (G-58) who I ran into in Brussels by accident. I retired in '93, spent the next 3 years either back in Connecticut or Russia where I had 2 companies. Couldn't make it happen there & was offered a Chair at Miami of Ohio and came back. Then, instead of living in Oxford, Ohio, I slipped across the border just to become a Hoosier again. I had a bit of a bad medical patch a few years ago so am mostly retired now.

Sorry for so long winded a response, but you asked.

I almost remembered your address. I carried the THTrib to your parents for 3 or 4 years. I had 20th, 21st and Monterey, between Wabash and Poplar. My Mom died 13 years ago and Dad just last year, 3 weeks shy of 90. It's marvelous that yours are still here.

I gather you don't know my friends. I'll stop there!

Hope our paths cross sometime.

Lew, why did you return to Indy.  I am a little puzzled as to your career.  I
assume you practiced medicine, but where, and what kind of office in this
area.  My career included US Army after IU, law school at UC-Hastings,
practice in Indy for short while, then returned to SF where I have practiced,
taught full time for awhile, but primarily had a high end trial and appellate
practice.  I now have an office in SF, and Indy, and an affiliation in LA.
Very challenging.  Retirement is not in my vocab.  I go with the boots,
yellow pad [aka computer], and mouth moving.

On a serious note, I am very dedicated to restoring the good name of lawyers.
Maybe it is an uphill fight, but I am committed to getting that done.

Good to hear from all the TH folks, particularly since I have keep my Indiana
connections and roots.  My daughter is in music at IU and will finish in May,
and my folks (222 Monterey for years) are at Westminister Village in TH.  I
still hang out with lots of TH guys, including Bob L. and Dave McNamar.

HOPE YOU CAN ENLIST LARGE NUMBERS TO DO THE SAME. IT IS VERY SAD, BUT IT IS A FACT THAT MOST PEOPLE HOLD ATTORNEYS IN LOW ESTEEM. THE TRUTH IS THAT I FEEL THAT WAY IN GENERAL, HOWEVER, I WORK WITH NUMBEROUS ATTORNEYS WHO I HOLD IN HIGH REGARD AND THEY SHARE YOUR CONCERNS. PROBABLY THE LARGEST CULPRIT IS THE RELUCTANCE TO SERIOUSLY DISCIPLINE OR REMOVE FROM PRACTICE THOSE BAD APPLES THAT CREATE THE BAD IMPRESSION. IT IS ALSO FURTHER FUELED BY THE NUMBERS OF ABSURB CASES WHICH PLUG UP THE LEGAL SYSTEM.

WOULD BE INTERESTED IN OTHERS IDEAS ON THIS.

Lew,

interesting career. Mine has been as good as it gets professionally.
As they say, "The law is a great profession, but a lousy business." I have
combined a love for the courtroom with a love of teaching and have done both.
I was even Assistant Dean and a professor at UC-Hastings in the early 70's
and founded a College of Advocacy that is now in its 31st year. Of course,
nothing in the cash drawer for that, so I just slug away. I have had my own
firm for 21 years, and love being my own boss, and working for (mostly)
people I like. Anyway you can check me out at a new web page (old web
address because not changed yet) at www.baileykornblum.com My partner of
several years (law, that is) died unexpectedly couple of months ago, which is
why the different address. We will keep in touch.
