RAPHOE ROYAL SCHOOL

The RAPHOE SCHOOL ESTATES was originally held in Townawilly, with about 180 children gathering daily at a central point where they were given a meal by the British Association for the relief of famine during the period 21 February 1848 to 19 August 1848. The children met at the old Scriptural Schoolhouse used by John Geatins, when Rev. John Irwin was Master of the Royal School. During this period in 1848, Joseph Rolston was temporarily in charge of the school.
Susequently a new master (John McCrane) was appointed/ McCrane had eighty pupils on roll in 1848. At about this time the local magistrates suggested that the old schoolhouse (which was in Ardeevan) should be adapted for use as the' constabulary barracks, as it made a good point in the marching of prisoners from Balleybofey to Donegal The school was therefore transferred to Garvagh, and the foll- owing were in attendance on May 1,1849:
