Instructions for creating your own list of place names
with links to your Reunion Web Family Cards


System Requirements:

A Macintosh Computer (As if a Reunion user could use use any other computer ?)
Reunion Version 7
A Spreadsheet Program
A Word Processor
As Frank Leister says in the Reunion Manual "Having a family wouldn't hurt either"



In Reunion

Select  Find -> Anything
Set operator to "AND"
Select      Birth Date    Is After      enter 1890
AND       Death Date    is         leave blank
Press  "Find"
 When list of people appears
Select  Mark Everybody in Family File
Select Unmark everybody in list
press   Close
                          (since place list does not have a privacy filter, we just unmarked everyone that should be private)

Select  List  ->  Places
Select desired events  (I check them all)
Select  Marked People
Press  List

When list of places appears, Select  Reverse Place Name Sort
In column 3, select  Birth-Death  (or anything else you would like to see listed with the people's names)
In column 4, select  Family ID   (this is absolutely necessary as Reunion uses the Family ID as part of the file name of Web Cards)
In column 5, select   None
Press  Report
Check  Include tabs between fields
for destination, select Plain Text File
Press   Save
Choose a folder and file name Places.txt
Press   Save



In your Spreadsheet
 
 
 
In Microsoft Excel

Select  File -> open
Select  Places.txt
Press  Open
Choose  original data type = delimited
select  start import at row 3
press  Next
For delimiters, check  Tab
Press Next
Go to each column in turn and select Column data format as Text
Press  Finish
 

In Appleworks Spreadsheet

Select  File -->  Open
Select  Document type  = Spreadsheet
Select  File Type  =  All available
Select file  Places.txt

highlight Rows 1 and 2
select Calculate -> Delete Cells
(this deletes the unwanted information in the first two rows)


The file is now loaded.
The place names and the person's surnames should be in column A
The person's Christian names should be in Column B
The Birth - Death date (or whatever you chose) should be in Column  C
The Family ID #  should be in Column D

Use the formulae in blue for Microsoft Excel.  Use the formulae in Green for Appleworks spreadsheet.
Copy the formulae from here and paste into the appropriate cell in your spreadsheet.
When pasting into the spreadsheet, select the proper cell then put the cursor in the formula bar before pasting, 
After pasting the formula, press return

Into Cell   E -1  enter:
          =INT(D1/500)+1
          =INT(D1/500)+1

Into cell    F -1  enter:
        =RIGHT(CONCATENATE("00",E1),2)
        =RIGHT(CONCAT("00",E1),2)

Into cell    G -1  enter:
          =RIGHT(CONCATENATE("00",D1-((E1-1)*500)),3)
        =RIGHT(CONCAT("00",D1-((E1-1)*500)),3)

Into cell   H-1  enter:
          =IF(A1="","",IF(D1="",CONCATENATE("<br><b><font size=+1>",A1,"</font></b><br>"),""))
         =IF(A1="","",IF(D1="",CONCAT("<br><b><font size=+1>",A1,"</font></b><br>"),""))

Into cell   I -1    enter:
          =IF(D1="","",D1)
         =IF(D1="","",D1)

Into cell   J -1   enter:
          =IF(D1="","",CONCATENATE("<a href=~WC",F1,"/WC",F1,"_",G1,".HTM~>",A1,",  ",B1,"</A> ",C1,"<br>"))
        =IF(D1="","",CONCAT("<a href=~WC",F1,"/WC",F1,"_",G1,".HTM~>",A1,",  ",B1,"</A> ",C1,"<br>"))

Into cell   K  1  enter:
          =CONCATENATE(H1,J1)
         =CONCAT(H1,J1)

In Microsoft Excel

select cells E-1 through K-1
copy the above cells down to the bottom of your list of places.
hilight all the cells in column K
select  Edit -> Copy
select  Insert -> Worksheet
select  Edit ->  Paste Special
in the pop up window
select  Paste - Values
Select  Operation - None
Press OK

Select  File ->  Save as
in the pop up window
choose  Save file as type -> Microsoft Excel Workbook
choose folder and name file "Places.EXE"
Press  Save

In Appleworks Spreadsheet

highlight cells E-1 through  K- xxx 
        (where xxx is the # of last row at the bottom of your list of places)
Select  Calculate -> Fill Down

hilight all the cells in Column  K
Select  Edit -> Copy

If you worked so far in Excel, then continue in Microsoft Word. 
If you started out in Appleworks Spreadsheet, then continue in Appleworks Word Processor.
In Microsoft Word

Select  File -> Open
Choose "Places.EXE"
Press  Open
In pop up window:
Select  Open document in window  -> Sheet 1
Select  Name or cell range  -> Entire worksheet
Press OK

Select  Edit -> Replace 
In  Find What, enter  ~ (that's the tilde found at top left of the keyboard)
In Replace With, enter  "  ( that's the double quote marks)
Press Replace All
 

In Appleworks Word Processor

Select  Edit -> Paste
Select  Edit -> Find/Change -> Find/Change
In  Find, enter  ~  (that's the tilde found at top left of keyboard)
In  Change  enter  (that's the double quote marks)
Press  Change All
In pop up window  press OK
 

With either word processor

Copy the following and paste at the beginning of the file.

Then copy the following and paste at the bottom of your file.

In Microsoft Word

Select  File -> Save As
For  Save Current Document As,  enter  PLACES.HTM
For Save File as Type,  select  Text Only
Press   Save

In Appleworks Wordprocessor

Select  File -> Save As
For  Save As, select  Text
Enter PLACES.HTM
Press   Save

The File is now complete and is ready to upload to your web site. It must be placed in the root directory

(the same directory as your Table of Contents)                     

If I haven't made any mistakes here, and you follow the instructions to the letter your page will work.

(I followed the instructions and it did work for me)

You will also need to put a link on your Table of Contents page, linking to PLACES.HTM
