Donald Winsor6 Shankle
Lt Col US Army, Ret (Clara5Winsor, Sophia4Taylor,
Julianna3Pike,
Francis2,
Capt1) (Donald Winsor Shankle, only child of the
above parents, was raised in Watertown, Mass. He was a tall, thin, inquisitive
boy with a love for all things mechanical. As a young boy, he was tall and
awkward, weighing only 88 pounds at age
twelve and not yet physically coordinated. At age 15, he had matured to adult
size, weighed 185 pounds and was a well-coordinated enthusiast for sports,
especially baseball, which he played with
his friends at every non-working opportunity. As a teenager, he tinkered
with bicycles, automobiles, building his own rowboat at age 13. He was
intelligent, but a mediocre student, in
those days, because he ony delved into those things which interested him
and slid through those that didn't. With World War II, raging at the time, a
lot of things were dismissed with little importance, a factor which he later
lived to regret, but which also made him perservere that much more in order to
excel. Because of boredom, he left high school, in his senior year, and entered
the Massachusetts Maritime Academy to follow in the footsteps of his ancestors,
but in about eight months, he realized that those long boring days at sea were
not for him, and he resigned. With the Draft staring him in the face, he
decided to enlist in the service, as many of his friends had already done. He
was sent to Infantry basic training at Fort Bragg, NC, where he learned to
handle all types of weapons, from pistols to heavy machine guns and bazookas.
He was sent to the 1st Cavalry Division in the occupation of Japan. During the
time
he
was there, he played football with the 8th Cavalry Regiment and also became a
good baseball player, however, he suffered some football injuries to his knees,
which precluded any further baseball ambitions. When he was discharged from the
Army in early 1948, he went to northern Maine, to work as a bulldozer operator
in the construction of Loring AFB, but due to torrential
rains
that spring, the project was postponed and he worked in Maine, Vermont and New
Hampshire on construction jobs, mostly as a form carpenter. He spent that
winter working in a woodworking shop in Watertown, MA, and the following summer
as a truck driver and crew chief on setting up forms for house foundations. In
the Fall of 1949, he entered Tufts University, at Medford, MA as an engineering
student, and it was here that he had to work so hard to overcome the
shortcomings of sliding through high school. In January 1951 he was called back
into the
service,
and became a jet engine mechanic in the Air Force. With no idea of when the
Korean war would end, and no hope of getting a commission in the Air Force,
with only three semesters of college, he transferred to the Army to be eligible
for Officer's Candidate School. He then spent the next four months, while
waiting for orders to OCS, as a bayonet instructor and assisted with other
aspects of basic training at Fort Dix, NJ. He was then off to OCS, which he
described as a little bit of "hell here on earth." "It will
definitely make you or break you." On August 30, 1952, he was commissioned
a second Lieutenant. Two days later, on Monday, September 1, 1952, he was
married to Mary Patricia Hanavan at Westborough, MA. About a week after their
marriage, they were off to Redstone Arsenal at Huntsville, Alabama on their,
first of many assignments. After ten months of intensive training at the
Ordnance Guided Missile School, he was assigned to White Sands Missile Range,
NM. While there, his first child, Steven James was born on August 4, 1954 at
the USAF Hospital at El Paso, Texas. A few weeks later he was off to Korea. In
the spring of 1956, he was assigned to a missile battalion in the Boston Air
Defense. While stationed there, two more children were born, Jeffrey John on
January 4, 1958, and
Kathleen
Marie on May 21, 1959. In November of 1959, the family arrived in Germany for a
three year tour of duty with antiaircraft gun and missile units, and a year of
General Staff duty. While there, two more children were born at the US Army
Hospital at Heidelberg, Matthew Winsor on August 2, 1960, and Mary Melissa on
February 5, 1962. After a separation of some six months, while he attended The
Command & General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, the family
reunited at Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas, where he first saw his new daughter,
Lisa Ann,
born
on April 19, 1963 at Worcester, MA, during his absence. Their fourth and fifth
sons were born at the US Army William Beaumont Hospital in El Paso, Joseph Alan
on September 10, 1964, and Zachary Robert on April 25, 1966. The family
remained in El Paso during his tour in Vietnam in 1967. He was reassigned to
the Air Defense Board at Fort Bliss, upon his return, and remained there
until January 31, 1970, when he retired
from the US Army with some
twentyfour
years of military service, having risen from Private to Lt Colonel during the
period 1951-1970. On June 1, 1970, the family moved to their newly-built home
at 1520 Lucky Street, Oceanside, California. He was employed by the State of
California as a Employment Services Officer, and that capacity, supervised
several sections of the Oceanside office. He took early retirement from the
state in
the
latter part of 1978, whereupon he helped his oldest son, Steve, in his general
automotive repair business. As a result of a gasoline crisis, the business
failed, and he was fully retired. He spent most of his days repairing and
upgrading the family sailboat. While recovering from a bout of infectious
hepatitis, he learned of the existence of a senior softball league for persons
over 55. He signed up in the early summer of 1986, and has been playing three
mornings
of
softball each week. As of this writing, he is still playing on a regular
basis); b. 24 Nov 1928 Parker Hospital, Boston, Suffolk, MA, USA (Born at 2:00 AM); m. Mary Patricia Hanavan, daughter of John Francis
