A family tree can wither if nobody tends it's roots --Unknown
I wish I would have ask more questions when my great-grandmother was still alive. I wish I would have known then what I know now. I wish I would have taken the time to sit at the feet of my elders and listen to their stories. I wish I would have asked more questions when my grandparents were younger and could still remember the answers.
I did not do these things then. I am now asking all the questions that I can to those still left here. I now take time to listen to my grandma and mom talk of their childhood with wide eyed fascination, eager for every drop of information, mesmerized by their stories, yearning to learn more about my roots, hungry for my history. Genealogy has become more to me than a hobby, I desire to know who I am and where I came from. How did my family get to America? What tribulations did they face? What joys did they share? Who died for my freedom? Who is the man in the picture in Grandma's keepsake box? These are things I once never thought of, I was too busy living my life, a life I would have never had if not for my ancestors life stories.
These questions are thoughts that now flood my mind daily. Yes this is more than a hobby indeed, this is a quest, an obsession, a calling of past voices to find my roots, to understand my life. The answers I find during this journey will be passed on to my children and to their children. Maybe just maybe one hundred years from now my descendants won't have to ask
