James Trenaman

Birth Name James Trenaman 1a

No Trenamans have been found in North Petherwin following the baptism of James in 1734.
Both parents had died by 1744 and two of the brothers William and Thomas settled in Hatherleigh.

James Trenaman, b.1734, must have been in Hatherleigh at some stage with his two older brothers because it is not feasible that he would have been left in North Petherwin following the death of their parents. However, he probably decided that being a mason was not for him and joined the Navy.

His brother-in-law Edward White was a witness at his marriage; his wife Joan (nee Angel) being a sister of the bride. Edward White & Joan Angel were born in Hatherleigh and married there on 25 Jul 1754.
It may be that Edward White was also a relative of Mary White who married Thomas Trenaman on 04 Nov 1753 Hatherleigh.

At the time of his marriage James was recorded as a mariner, late of His Majesty’s Ship, Terrible.
The Treaty of Paris was signed on 10 February 1763 ending the seven year war so perhaps James had just returned home from a tour of duty fighting for his King and country (other marriages on this page of the register were also for mariners from various ships)

H.M.S TERRIBLE was a 74 gun third rate ship of the line, launched at Harwich on 4th September 1762. She was scuttled after being severely damaged by the French in the Battle of Chesapeake in late 1781 in the biggest defeat for the Royal Navy in 400 years.
