Okehampton Mourns – Funeral of Mr J Medland

The funeral took place at Okehampton on Monday [Monday 9 Sept 1940] of Mr J Medland, who died at his home in East-street, Okehampton at the age of 65 years.
He was a native of Lifton, but had resided in Okehampton the greater part of his life, thirty-five of which he had spent in the service of Messrs. John Cornish, Ironmongers.

His illness had been of long duration, but it had been patiently borne. “Jim" had a very cheery disposition, and was highly esteemed.
During the Great War he served in the Royal Air Force.
The service at the parish church [All Saints Parish Church] was conduct by the Vicar (Rev. F E. Compton).

.....The principal mourners were Mrs. J. Medland [nee Trenaman] (widow), Miss A. Medland, Mrs. R. Wilton  (daughters). Mr. R. Wilton (son-in-law). Mr. and Mrs. W. Medland. (brother and sister-in-law), Mrs. J. Sherwood (sister),
Mr. and Mrs. J. Balkwill, Mr. and Mrs. J. Treneman, Mr. T. Branton, Mr and Mrs J Harris, Mr  H Treneman, Mrs J Cornish, Mrs W Treneman, Mrs T Treneman (brothers-in-laws and sisters-in-law), Messrs. W. H. T. and A Branton (nephews), Mrs G. Chapple, Mrs. W. Standlake, Blanche, Misses K and M. Cornish (nieces),

.....The coffin, of unpolished oak, was borne by Messrs. F. Barnlcoat, E. Partridge, A. Marles,  H. Watkins, H. Richards and W. Isaac.

.....Amongst those who attended were Mr  E. C. Cornish (head of the firm of Messrs. John Cornish, ironmongers), Messrs. W. Rendle, W. Clinick, S Mingo and C. Bo1t (fellow employees).

.....The Rechabite Friendly Society of which deceased was a member, was represented by Messrs, W. Furse, L Lobb, F. Mogridge, A. Jeffery and H. Beer.
