Find my Past.co.uk British Newspapers Hampshire Telegraph 12 October 1881 THE FATAL ACCIDENT AT THE RAILWAY STATION.—The County Coroner (E. Goble, Enq.) held an inquest on Friday evening at the “ Railway" Hotel, on the body of Henry Wells, aged 73, whose death we reported on Saturday.—Mr. Bowen, solicitor, from the Company’s Offices: at Waterloo Station, represented the London South Western Railway Company—The Jury, after choosing Mr. Alfred Etherington as foreman, viewed the body and the spot where the accident occurred, The body was identified by George Wells, of 37, Church-street, Landport, a smith in the Dockyard, a son of the deceased. The unfortunate man was formerly a wheelwright and smith at Selborne, but he has for some time been living at Greatham, and has been supported by his sons, He came to the Petersfield Heath Fair on the 6th inst., and went to the Station to return by the 6.35 train. There were a great number of people at the Station, and as the train was coming in, Winham, a porter, stood down on the line to prevent them from crossing over from the down to the up platform. Deceased, however, slipped past him unnoticed, and as he was attempting to mount the opposite side the engine caught him and passed over his body, causing instant death. The train was going at a slow pace, and the third wheel of the engine when it stopped was upon the deceased, and had to be backed to get out the body.—The Jury returned a verdict of “ Accidental death,” adding a rider to the effect that although they did not blame the railway officials at Petersfield, they considered the Company ought to provide a subway, and that if there had been one in all probability the accident would not have occurred.—The deceased was buried in the Petersfield Cemetery on Sunday. The Rev. L, C. Edgeworth, Curate of Sheet, was the officiating clergyman, and at the close of the service he delivered a most impressive address, pointing out the dangers to which mankind are subject and the necessity of being always prepared to meet God. The address was listened to by a large concourse of people present. Image © THE BRITISH LIBRARY BOARD. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. Transcribed by Les T |
