RETIRED NAVAL OFFICER PASSING.
The death occurred it his home, " Rosedale”, 43 Pilgrim Way, Otford on Monday, of Mr. John Frederick Fairminer in his 74th year.
Mr. Fairminer. who who born at Cheam, Surrey, was a retired naval officer and had resided in Otford since 1921, in which year he left the service.
Having spent the greater part of his life in the Navy. Mr. Fairminer was at the time a his retirement Chief Officer at Galloways Coastguard Station near Lydd, previous to which he held a similar position at Swanage Coastguard Station.
He joined the service in the days of the old sailing battleships, and practically the whole of his career had been spent in sailing vessels, with the exception at short period when he commanded a steam tender at Greenock. He left the Navy in 1903 and went into the Coastguard Service, being recalled to active duty at the outbreak of the last war.
He was then appointed Examination Officer on the “Julie" outside Queenstown Harbour and it was while he was filling this important post that he was called to assist in the rescue of passengers from the “ill-fated “Lusitania.” Mr. Fairminer's war service also included the dangerous duty of dismantling mines that had been washed ashore. He spent the latter part of his service in revenue cutters including “Active." “The Rose." and " Neptune." holding the rank of captain in the latter vessel.
Since his retirement Mr. Fairminer had not enjoyed good health. and it was mainly on this account that he did not take any active part in public affairs. He devoted himself almost entirely to his garden, or which he will very fond.
Esteemed by all who knew him, Mr. Fairminer passing will occasion deep regret not only in Otford but over a much wider field. He in survived by a widow and an only son, Lt.-Com. Reginald Thomas Fairminer. R.N, who is at present home on sick leave.
