Gordon Genealogy Home Page

This genealogy home page is dedicated simply to all the Gordons who came before me - the Gordons of Scotland and Ireland and those Gordon brothers, James and John, who immigrated to Virginia in the mid 1700's. They were sons of James Gordon of Sheepbridge in the Barony of Newry, County Down, Ireland, and his wife Sarah Greenway.

Colonel James Gordon emigrated to the Colony of Virginia from County Down, Ireland, around 1738. He settled in Lancaster County, Virginia, at Merry Point on the Corotoman River, a tributary of the Rappahannock River. He pursued the vocation of a planter on an extensive scale and engaged and prospered in the exportation of tobacco from Virginia to Whitehaven, England. He owned ships of his own that were used in the trade. In return for his tobacco, he brought back many articles of foreign production which he sold in his two stores in Lancaster County, Virginia, demonstrating his ability as a resourceful merchant. James married first Milicent Conway and had issue: Ann, a son, Agatha and Sarah. James married second Mary Harrison and had issue: James, Mary, Hannah, Elinor, John, Elizabeth, a daughter, Sarah, Nathaniel and John.

John Gordon (5th great-grandfather of my husband, Lindy H. Gordon) emigrated to Virginia from County Down, Ireland, before 1756 and settled at Urbanna, a port of entry on the south side of the Rappahannock River in Middlesex County, Virginia. John was a merchant at Urbanna and owned several tracts of land in Middlesex County where he was a planter and engaged in the tobacco trade. John sold his estates in Middlesex County in 1762 and moved to Richmond County on the northern side of the Rappahannock River where he died in 1780. He was also a Justice of the Peace for the County of Richmond. John married Lucy Churchill and had issue: Hannah, James, Churchill (4th great-grandfather of my husband), John, Sarah, William, Mary, Nathaniel, Lucy, Armistead, Samuel and Priscilla.

It is said of the brothers, James and John Gordon, that they were enterprising and successful merchants, and became wealthy and influential. The brothers were closely connected throughout life.
