The following letter was among papers found in the Van Leer writing box which Marjorie B. Winter inherited. She has tried to transcribe it exactly with spelling and grammar errors included. Marjorie's great-grandparents were John Franklin Van Leer, Jr. and Mary Rutter Bullock. Mary was a daughter of Lewis Bullock and Charlotte Rutter. Lewis was a brother of John Foulk Bullock, and both were sons of Moses Bullock and Esther Foulk. This letter opens a wonderful window into the personal lives of these family members. Marjorie B. Winter has graciously given me her permission to include this letter with my Bullock/Talley genealogy on my web page. Please do not distribute it without first contacting Marjorie at [email protected].

Mexico, September 20, 1845
Dear Mother [Esther Foulk Bullock]
I have had this letter in contemplation for some time. I received one from my wife who informs me you wrote her to know where I am. I am in Mexico at present but I want to leave after the 21st of next month October. I want to go to Texas to arrange a land title. I have there also the head right of Fathers which is 690 acres or a section. I have with his and my own two sections or 1280 acres. It islocated 30 miles above the city of Auston the capital on the river Colorada. My intention is to sell it if possible and give the money to you or make some other arrangement for you when I come home. I am perfectly well and would request you to have me a letter sent by mail but I should not get it as I shall be here but a few days. Your letter would never reach me. There is no communication between this country and Texas but when I get to N.Orleans, I will write you and sendyou some money. God bless you. I hoipe you are well. Your affectionate son John F. Bullock.
