John was engaged in mercantile pursuits in Lynchburg, Virginia, for many years. [1]

On 15 Dec 1804 when John Matthews was 23, he married Agnes W. SCOTT[1],[2], daughter of Major Samuel SCOTT.[1],[2]

They had the following children:
i. Ann Belinda[1],[2]. Born on 10 Nov 1805.[1],[2] Ann Belinda died ? .

In Oct 1835 when Ann Belinda was 29, she married Hugh WHITE[1],[2].[1]
ii. Louisa[1],[2]. Born on 28 Sep 1808.[1] Louisa died ? .

Louisa married Elias OGDEN[1],[2].

Elias Ogden was of South Carolina. Among his descendants was the Honorable Harry Warren Ogden of Benton, Louisiana, who was a member of the Louisiana Constitutional Convention of 1879; member of the Louisiana House of Representatives 1880-1888; Speaker of the House, 1884-1888; and member of the 53rd, 54th and 55th Congress of the United States. iii. Maria Jane[1]. Born on 11 Jan 1811.[1] Maria Jane died ? .
iv. James Beverly[1] (Died as Infant). Born on 11 Jul 1815.[1] James Beverly died on 10 Dec 1815.[1]
v. Agnes Maria[1]. Born on 17 Apr 1816.[1] Agnes Maria died in 1851; she was 34.[1]

Agnes died unmarried. [1]
vi. Caroline Scott[1]. Born on 16 Jul 1817.[1] Caroline Scott died ? .
vii. Samuel[1],[2]. Born on 9 Dec 1820.[1],[2] Samuel died ? .

Samuel Gordon went west and was married. Issue unknown. [1], [2]
viii. John Calvin[1]. Born on 8 Apr 182?[1] John Calvin died ? in Seattle.[1]

John died unmarried. [1]
