Note* | My great-grandfather was truly an intinerant agricultural labourer (or 'ag-lab' as we usually call them). A different residence in Berwickshire every census he was recorded in, also I'm told by a relation of mine that he also lived in the picturesque Berwickshire village of Redpath. One residence I must mention, that from the census of 1871, the farm of Sandyknowe near Smailholm Tower. Sandyknowe had previously been the home of the grandfather of Sir Walter Scott, and the great man himself stayed there when he was a child. Sandyknowe and Smailholm Tower were also the subject of a drawing by the artist Turner. James and his wife Helen Muir are buried in the cemetery just outside of Lauder.10 |
