Note* | My grandfather was born in 111 Aitkenhead Road in the Mount Florida district of south Glasgow. Not far from Hampden Park, rather appropriately as football would play a large part in his life. Sometime in the 1900s the McCutcheon family would move to Coatbridge in Lanarkshire - the 'Brig earned the name the "Iron Burgh" due to its heavy metal industry. He was named after his aunt, Margaret Dunsmore's husband, Robert Stewart. His parents would call him Roabbie in their Ayrshire/Renfrewshire accents, but later in life his friends would call him Bob. To his children he was 'Pop'. My grandparents met and married in the 1920s. A mixed marriage which no doubt brought disapproval in some quarters in the then religiously divided Coatbridge. They produced twelve children - six boys and six girls - eleven of whom survived to adulthood. Providing for such a large family couldn't have been easy, especially in a time before the Welfare State was established. My grandfather had a variety of occupations, a decorator (in which profession he was followed by his three eldest sons, and one grandson), also a chimney sweep for a while. His last job was as a steel storeman for the Coatbridge firm of Neilson and Cleland. I remember visiting him once in his store. He had part of his foot missing, cut off as a result of an accident with a sheet of metal. During the Second World War he was a member of the local Home Guard. He had a number of interests, perhaps the dominating two were politics and football. My grandfather was a member of the Labour Party, and also for a while a Communist until he fell out with the Stalinists. When in the Labour Party he once stood for election for Monklands council, in what I am told was a strong Tory ward. He lost, and some in the family believe this was partly due to him being married to a local Catholic lassie. Football was without doubt his favourite sport. He could never be accused of being a glory hunter as he maintained a life-long support for the local club, Albion Rovers. And was friendly with the Rovers directors and managers over the years, and due to this he had connections in high places in the game, and of course this provided tickets for big games and internationals, some of which were directed to this grandson. And he was a regular supplier of football programmes, valuable ones too, which I still have in my collection. One recollection from the sixties: he informed my aunts, Anne and Jean, that he would be staying with one of his pals for a few days. Fine. A few days later the received a postcard from him - from Cologne ! He and his mates had travelled over to Germany to watch (Glasgow) Rangers play in a European tie, without mentioning it to my aunts. My grandfather wasn't an easy man to live with, he was a disciplinarian, and one aunt of mine reckons he was devoid of a sense of humour. I disagree, his humour was as dry as the Sahara, but it did exist. He was a lucky man, in that he had my grandmother for his wife, and of course their children, who were and are a credit to them both.2 |
