Information about soldiers from Glossop parish Discharged as

Pensioners - Napoleonic Period & later


Set out below are those soldiers identified as being from Glossop parish who served in the wars against France between 1794 - 1815 or later & were discharged via the Royal Hospital, Chelsea.  Many were already in the army & many stayed in after peace was declared.   One or two enlisted later.   Not all of those who enlisted will be here because some may not have given their home town or village and I may not therefore have extracted them.  

Hugh ARNFIELD of Hayfield

Description: About Twenty Four years; 5` 10"; Dark hair; Hazel Eyes; Dark Complexion; a smith by trade

His Majesty`s the 96th Queen`s Own Regiment of Infantry

1st These are to certify that Private Hugh ARNFIELD born in the Parish of Hayfield in or near the town of Darby in the county of Derby was enlisted for the aforesaid regiment at Hayfield in the county of Derby on the eighth day of May 1813 at the age of Eighteen for unlimited service

2nd That he hath served in the Army for the Space of Five Years and Two hundred and Seventeen Days, after the age of Eighteen

Statement of Service: 96th Regiment 8 May 1813 - 10 Dec 1818 Total 5 years 217 days

3rd That in consequence of the Disbandment of this Regt. he is hereby Discharged

4th That he is not to my knowledge incapacitated by the sentence of a General Court Martial from receiving a Pension.

5th That his General Conduct as a Soldier has been Good

7th I Hugh ARNFIELD do hereby acknowledge that I have received.......... etc. (signed by his mark) Hugh ARNFIELD

I Hugh ARNFIELD do make oath that I am at present a Sergeant in Captain H.D. Courtayne`s Company in the 59th (or 2d Nottinghamshire) Regiment of Foot, that I am of the age of Thirty Three years, and that by virtue of General Orders by the Commander in Chief in India, dated 28 Apr 1828 No 227 I do hereby Volunteer to serve His Majesty, His Heirs, and Successors in the Third or Buffs Regiment of Foot until I shall be legally discharged.

Thomas ROYLE of Hayfield

Description: About Twenty Six years; 5` 6" in height; Brown hair; Grey eyes; Light complexion; a spinner by trade

His Majesty`s 14th Queens Regt. of Lancers

1st That Private Thomas ROYLE born in the Parish of Hayfield in or near the Town of Derby in the County of Derby was enlisted for the aforesaid Regiment at Birmingham in the County of Warwick on the 16th Day of July 1810 at the Age of Sixteen for Unlimited Service

2nd That he hath served in the Army for the space of Ten Years and 94 Days, after the Age of Eighteen, according to the subjoined

Statement of Service: 16 Jul 1810 - 17 Oct 1820; 16 Queens Lancers Waterloo; 10 yrs 94d plus 2y under 18

3rd That in consequence of a Diseased ....... which renders him totally unfit for further service he is hereby discharged

4th That he is not to my knowledge incapacitated by the sentence of a General Court Martial from receiving a Pension.

5th That his General Conduct as a Soldier has been Good

An advance will be made to Private Thos. ROYLE of £1. 3s 10d for himself and also £1. 6s 3d for his Wife & one Child, to enable them to proceed from hence to Chelsea

About 30 years of age; 5` 7" in height; brown hair; grey eyes; brown complexion; a weaver by trade

His Majesty`s Eighth Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Artillery

These are to certify that John TURNER Bombardier in Capt & Adjt Gordon`s Detacht. in the Battalion and Regiment aforesaid, born in the Parish of Hayfield in or near the Town of Stockport in the County of Derby (sic) was inlisted at the Age of Seventeen years, and hath served in the said Regiment for the Space of Thirteen Years and 158 Days according to the following statement, but in consequence of Fits is placed upon the Pension List at Ninepence halfpenny per diem, commencing the 1st April 1817
