(Mike`s comment: `Not exactly a hive of activity, apart from checking how big the wheels were on the carts and charging according to rules the only highlight is when the pig turned up with the donkey on the 18th ! Obviously some roads were busier than others, not High Hill Toll Bar road, still it was winter and maybe things got moving in summer. Many toll collectors I believe had other jobs but this shows just how boring collecting such tolls could be. At the end of the month wages of 8/- were paid to this toll collector.`)

(Mike again: With all that traffic on the roads it stands to reason that just like today they would need repairing.A repair bill "for work at slip at Low Leighton and repairing Furness Bridge" gives us a few names of those involved in the task Feb 1840)
Feb 1st 1840 Samuel DALE 16 and a quarter days at 2/6
Joseph PURSGLOVE 12 days at 2/6
John HADFIELD 12 days at 2/6
Samuel BENNETT 8 days at 2/-
Geo TURNER 8 days at 2/-
Matthew HOWARD 6 days at 2/6
1 horse and 2 carts and man 2 days at 5/6
11 days 2 horses 2 carts and 1 man at 8/-
D RANGELEY surveying 14 days at 5/-
The bill was settled 24 Feb 1840 Dennis RANGELEY signing it. It was presented on the 23rd of Feb 1840!
Hope some of you recognise the names of the workmen.
