Cemeteries in the Town of Stanford

The Town of Standford is very rural. It's beautiful rolling farmland and woodlots was the home of the late James Cagney and is the current horse paths for the Millbrook Hunt Club. The two lane State highway (Rt 82) is the major road in the Town and runs SW to NE thru the heart of the town. There are 3 existing hamlets; Standfordville, Bengall and Stissing, all along Rt 82. The Taconic Parkway approximates the western edge of this town. The Towns of Milan and Pine Plains are to the north, NorthEast and Amenia are to the east, Washington to the south and Clinton is to the west.

Stanfordville Stanfordville 1823 1823 441 Behind the United Church of Christ. On east side of Rt 82, just south of the hamlet of Stanfordville. 914-868-2286. Well cared for. In 1914, "Well cared for."

Friends Stanfordville 1831 1833 173 Only a few graves remain in open lot in "downtown Stanfordville". Lot is mowed and maintained.
In 1914, "Poorly cared for. The Stanfordville meeting of the Society of Friends was organized about 1800. In 1828, the meeting divided into Hicksite and Orthodox. The Hicksite meeting went out of existence in1871. The Orthodox is still maintained.

St Mary's Catholic Bangall On Hunn's Lake road. Modern / Active cemetery behind the Church of the Immaculate Conception on a hill that faces North West. No obvious old stones. 914-452-1863

Baptist Church
1759-1814 Bangall 1791 1793 83 The N-S road was probaby the existing Rt 82 from Stanfordville to Bangall on Hunns Lake Road. From Bangall North, you probably took Mills Road and Cold Spring Road toward Milan.   Current Rt 82 probably ran right thru both of these cemeteries when it bypassed Bangall. See photos below
Baptist location 1: On Cold Spring Rd (CR53) at Rt 82. Between Cold Spring and Wappingers Creek.   Many stones still visible when visited in Winter 2000. Small trees and brush cleared away. It's a low spot, and I'm surprised it was built so close to the Wappingers Creek.
In 1914, " The site of the first and second buildings of the Baptist Church of Bangall, on the west and eat sides of the main Road out of Bangall to the north. Rough, overgrown and unsightly. The older ground is bare, The latter one full of bushes, etc. The Bangall Baptist Church was founded in 1759 and the Congregation has occupied three buildings, all of them on The main road leading north from the village of Bangall. The first building was used until 1814, the second 1814-1867, And the third since 1869. There were burials around the First and the second. The second stood near Bangall on the East side of the road, the first farther north on the west Side.

1814-1867 Bangall 1790 1794 240 On west side of Rt 82 where intersected with Millis St.   Dozens (?) of graves are visible on the sloped hill close to Rt 82... But I can't imagine 240 people buried on this non-flat area.   I imagine Rt 82 took much of the cemetery.

Bear Market Bear Market 1790 1793 55 Not yet personally visited, but listed on my recent country Atlas. Take Parners Road exit from Taconic Parkway, going east, turn right (south) onto Willow Brook Rd, change onto Hicks Rd when Willow Brook right turns south. Turn left onto Market Lane. Probably 1.5 miles total from Taconic.
Note: pre-1800 graves are Sutherland family again.
In 1914, "Community ground. At Bear market in the western part of the town. Fair Condition. Enclosed by a fence, in occasional use."

Carpenter 1808 1811 Listed on the geneology/History sites as being in Pine Plains. I think that the location actually lies in Stanfordville. The family ground on the far east side of the Town. It is on east side of Carpenter Hill Road, 0.2 miles north of intersection with CR88. Very close to the Town of North East, and the Bockee - Square cemetery. In very nice shape. Front tablet visible in the photo below before the stone wall is in memory for Benjamin Carpenter, 1749-1837 and Mary Pugsley Carpenter, 1756-1821.   See photos below

Stanfordville Friends Ground
Inactive cemetery, in the hamlet of Stamfordville, on Rt 82. Several dozen tombstones exist toward back of lot between the deli (by van) and the first house on Creamery Road. There is a flag pole and a small wooden sign for the Friend Ground in front of the two evergreens by the road (by car).

Baptist Church & a Second Cemetery in Bangall
There are two Inactive cemeteries just north of the hamlet of Bengall on Rt 82. The younger one is on the west side of Rt82 at the intersection of Rt 87. The older one is 0.5 miles north on Cold Spring Road 20 yards off of Rt 82 along the Wappingers Creek Our visit was in the winter. Several dozen stones were visible at both sites.

Carpenter Cemetery
Family ground on the far east side of the Town. It is on east side of Carpenter Hill Road, 0.2 miles north of intersection with CR88. Very close to the Town of North East, and the Bockee - Square cemetery. In very nice shape. Front tablet visible in the photo before the stone wall is in memory for Benjamin Carpenter, 1749-1837 and Mary Pugsley Carpenter, 1756-1821.
