He was reported kill ed at the First Battle of Bull Run, but was found a prisoner in the Lib by Prison and was exchanged and set to his regiment at Antietam. He found ed the Withington and Cooley Manufacturing Company, makers of agricultur al implements, in Jackson, Jackson, Mich. He was commissioner of the Michi gan State Militia, and was urged at various times to become a candidate f or all leading civil offices in Michigan, including those of governo r, U. S. senator, and congressman, but declined these honors. A monument e rected to his memory in Jackson attests the high regard and affection fe lt for him by the citizens of Michigan."
