General Notes: Autobiography:
================Marshall Frederic JOHNSON was born at Cedars of Lebanon Ho spital (now Ceda rs-Sinai), Los Angeles, the only son of magazine busine ss manager Robert C hamberlin JOHNSON. He attended Canyon Grammar Scho ol when the family liv ed in Santa Monica Canyon plus two years at Urban M ilitary Academy in Bren twood (the first year being his parents idea, t he second year his own by c hoice), then to Paul Revere Junior High Scho ol until the family moved to N orthern California in 1958.About this ti me Marshall was taken by his father on a business trip to N ew York Cit y, and they flew cross-country on one of the first jet fligh ts -- the b oy being gifted with a certificate to prove it! When the fami ly spl it up in 1959, both Marshall and his sister Claire went with their m oth er to Hawaii where they lived in the Palolo Valley area of Kaimuki in H on olulu and he attended Palolo Intermediate. The recent divorce and the const ant ill-will between the two parents caus ed considerable tension and, una ble to cope with the pressure, Marshall we nt off to Stillwater Cove Ran ch School for Boys some 50 miles north of Jen ner on the rugged Sonoma Cou nty coast of California for two years (1960/61 ?). When his mother and si ster moved to Alameda, California, where they l ived on Shoreline Driv e, he attended Alameda High School and then graduat ed from Oakland High S chool in June of 1963. Then followed a year at Oakla nd City College (n ow the Telegraph Avenue campus of Merrit College, ironic ally the same bui ldings in which his mother had attended high school) whe re he was the edi tor of the college literary magazine, A.D. During the su mmer of 19 64 he moved to Los Angeles, first staying with his father then m oving in to his own apartment by the beach in the Ocean Park area of San ta Monica. That summer, the first of his independence from his parents, he first be ca me involved in politics and worked with a youth group for the Republic an n ominee for president, Barry M. GOLDWATER.During his two years at San ta Monica City College (1964-66) he was preside nt of the campus Young Rep ublicans (a post he also held later at CSCDH), a nd was active in suppo rt of Ronald REAGAN's gubernatorial primary bid in 1 966 when he was the W est Los Angeles County youth co-ordinator. He had be en pursuing a maj or of business with studies in journalism (in the father 's footsteps ?) at S.M.C.C. but when he did his upper graduate studi es at Californ ia State College, Dominguez Hills from 1966 to 1968 he chang ed to dual ma jors in History and American Studies. At Dominguez Hil ls he served as Bu siness Manager of the college newspaper. Graduating wi th a B.A. from Domi nguez Hills, he worked as a teacher's assistant to D r. Richard L. CLA RK at El Camino College and lived on Pier Avenue at the s eafront at Hermo sa Beach -- where in the evenings he enjoyed the music com ing from The Li ghthouse jazz club next door. While holding a positi on as a graduate tea ching assistant (spring of 1970), he began work on h is M.A. in Ancient Hi story at California State College at Long Beach, whe re he wrote his thes is entitled BALNEAE: The Relationship Between the Smal l, Privately-own ed Public Baths Buildings of the Roman Imperial Period a nd the Early Chri stian Church. Unfortunately, the thesis, which endeavour ed to prove th at the early Christians had acquired bath buildings when t he religion w as still illegal and had used them as baptistries, was blackb alled by o ne member of Marshall's committee, and he gave up the Masters 'S programm e. During this period he lived in an apartment on Belmont Heig hts in Lo ng Beach. In December of 1969 Marshall had taken his first true overseas tr ip (a f ew trips to Mexico, primarily Tijuana and Ensenada in Baja Califor nia, n ot really counting) when he flew to Rome for three weeks.Renti ng a motor scooter (dangerous, underpowered and lots of fun -- b ut n ot in the winter rain), he toured the city of Rome as well as goi ng as f ar south as Lake Nemi and CastleGondolfo (the Pope's summer hom e) and up t he coast to Civicheveccia. He fell in with an interesting cro wd, whi ch he connected with at the Cafe de Paris on the Via Veneto, and w as invit ed to have cocktails at the home of Gore VIDAL,the well-known ant i-establi shment American author. A day before Christmas he took the tra in to Napl es to look up someone he had spent a lot of time with three yea rs before w hen he was in Los Angeles to write an aborted screenplay abo ut the Sepoy R ebellion in 1856 India, Terrence RATTIGAN the English playw rite who liv ed on the island of Ischia in the bay of Naples.Unfortunatel y, he couldn't get through on the phone to RATTIGAN and end ed up spendi ng the most miserable Christmas of his life stuck in the hot el (it was ra ining cats and dogs) with no one who spoke English, nothi ng to read, a nd only incomprehensible Italian comedy shows to watch on tel evision!! W ith no turkey in sight for Christmas Dinner, he had to be sati sfied wi th a rather odd fish for supper. After the completion of his university wor k, he contributed the three anci ent history chapers to a college-level t ext entitled A Handbook of Weste rn Civilization, Vol. One while livi ng in Swan Valley, Idaho. In Decemb er of 1971, following a couple of wee ks vacation in Hawaii with his famil y, Marshall took over an alternati ve bookshop on 7th Street in Long Beac h, the Agoric, when the owner tir ed of it. He expanded it considerably, b ut in the early months of 19 72 he became involved (reluctantly at firs t) in the proposed initiative f or the California election in June of th at year concerning the decriminin alization of the possession of small amou nts of marijuana: Proposition 1 3. Leaving the day-to-day running of the b ookshop to a friend, he mov ed into the campaign staff house in Echo Par k, an older and somewhat pict uresque section of Los Angeles. He beca me a full-time paid staff memb er and headed up the Speakers' Bureau, as we ll as being co-chairman for I nformation and Education (a post he shared wi th Fran McDERMOTT, whom he l ater married). The proposition was accepted on to the ballot, and at the c ounting, Proposition 13 received a 1/3 favourab le vote. Though defeate d, the idea took hold in the state legislature a nd the next year it was e ssentially adopted into California law.Late in the Proposition 13 campai gn Marshall enlisted in the U.S. Navy, wi th his entrance date scheduled f or two weeks after the election. He sold t he bookshop (for a pittan ce as he had run it down to help finance himse lf during the initiative pe riod, but basically broke even) and entered t he Navy.He went to boot ca mp at Orlando, Florida (by choice, as he had already se en San Diego!) a nd then on to the Personnel School where he graduat ed as a personnelma n. His first posting was in the April of 1973 to an av iation squadron, V P-44, which flew P3 Orion anti-submarine planes and w as based in Brunswic k, Maine. Soon after his arrival at Brunswick the squa dron deployed for f ive months (May-November 1973) to the U.S. Naval Air St ation at Bermud a, which was a delightful way to spend the summer. As a pe rsonnelman, Ma rshall's duties were all office-orientated so not at all ard uous. He w as able to talk himself into a one-week flight to England in Ju ly of 197 3, and it was his first trip to England and he did all the usu al touri st things in London. The flight back included a one-night stop-ov er at L ajes on the island of Terciera in the Azores, where the crew got co mplete ly devastated drinking the local anise liquor. After the squadron return ed to Brunswick in the late autumn, Marshall to ok leave for a week in la te November 1973 and visited New York City -- pri marily for the importa nt "Akhenaten & Nefertiti" Egyptological exhibiti on at the Brooklyn Museu m. In February 1974 he got himself posted to a on e-month-long deployme nt to the naval station at Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Ri co, which was a ni ce change from the harsh Maine winter at Brunswick. Mar shall return ed to New York City at Easter of 1974 for another visit, a nd in June he t alked himself into a temporary posting with the Naval Recru iting Servi ce back in Long Beach and drove across the country -- taking t he southe rn route -- and visited the comic art convention in New York Cit y, Philad elphia, Washington D.C., various Civil War battlefields along t he way, Je fferson's home at Monticello, Atlanta, and San Antonio (the Ala mo was ama zingly small). The trip through the south was incredibly hot a nd humid, p articularly in an un-airconditioned bright yellow 1963 Volkswag en beetl e, but from west Texas on the humidity vanished and the rest of t he tr ip to Los Angeles was hot but comfortable. While in southern California, Ma rshall put in for a temporary transf er to the Naval Support Activity at L ong Beach, where he served as Mast Ye oman (a position in the disciplina ry department). That autumn he became r e-acquainted with Fran McDERMOT T, the Michigan girl he had worked wi th on the California Marijuana Initi ative two years before.Fran and Marshall continued to see each other duri ng this time, and in Jan uary 1975 they took a tour of California missio ns and ending in San Franci sco where they stayed with friends made duri ng C.M.I. days. They also dro ve up the coast to Fort Ross and Marshall 's old school at Stillwater Co ve -- which was no longer a school, but a p lace for campers. In early 19 75 returned by air on a quick leave to Brun swick, and made another tr ip to Washington D.C. in March. By April Marsh all was back in southern Ca lifornia where he married Fran and they to ok a short honeymoon in Ensenad a, Baja California. Meanwhile, in Apr il of 1975, Marshall participat ed in "Operation Baby-Lift" which was t he American evacuation of orphans f rom Vietnam, and he served as part-ti me driver for visiting dignitaries in cluding the Chief of the Australi an Naval Staff (MAY 1975).His temporary assignment at Long Beach finish ed in June of 1975, and Marsh all reported for duty aboard the U.S.S. S an Jose, a naval supply ship whi ch was at Hunter's Point Naval Shipya rd in San Francisco undergoing a refi t. In August the ship had its shake down cruise down the California coas t, and on 28th November the ship le ft San Francisco for a six-month fle et support deployment to southeast As ia. The crossing of the Pacific to ok over 20 days, and the ship arriv ed at its temporary home port at Sub ic Bay in the Philippines during Dece mber. Over the Christmas period Marsh all and a friend named Kevin MADS EN took a week's leave and explored the w ilds of northern Luzon island, t ravelling (on some very suspect public tra nsportation) as far afield as B aguio and the famous rice terraces of Bont oc with its primitive Igorot a nd Ifagao villagers. While in Bontoc they were invited to an Igorot funer al in which the deceas ed, an old woman, was seated in a chair in the door way of her hut and t he villagers had a bit party in the clearing in fro nt of the hut. A coup le of days stop-over in Manila followed, and they we nt on to the Pagsanj an River in Laguna province on 1st January 1976 whe re they took a dugout c anoe upriver to Pagsanjan Falls -- along the way s eeing the hurricane-dest royed sets for Francis Ford Coppola's film "Apoca lypse Now" which was bei ng filmed while Marshall was in the Philipines.Be tween 1st and 24th Febuary 1976 the U.S.S. San Jose made a cruise a ll t he way across the Indian Ocean to just out of sight of the Somali c oa st in Africa. On the 2nd of February Marshall participated in the trad iti onal "Crossing the Equator" cermonies, and after the cruise the ship s topp ed for three days in Singapore from the 24th to 27th of February. T he S an Jose then returned to Subic Bay for a month and a half until it sa il ed north to Hong Kong where it spent six days from 14th to 20th Ap ri l. It then proceeded to Kaohsiung on Taiwan (Republic of China) for fo ur d ays, and Marshall and Kevin MADSEN (his usual exploring companion) s pe nt a couple days looking at the sites on the southern part of the islan d.Having decided against re-enlisting in the Navy, despite already attai ni ng the rank of second class petty officer (PN2) and the prospects of ad dit ional world travel, Marshall left the U.S.S. San Jose and the Philipp in es on 16th May 1976, flying out of Clark AFB (destroyed in the 1 98 0s by a volcanic eruption). There were two stop-overs on the long fl ig ht back across the Pacific Ocean, one at Anderson AFB on Guam in the Ma ria nas Islands and the other at Hickham AFB in Hawaii where Marshall's si st er and her family came out to have a quick visit on 18th May -- the f ir st time he had seen them in five years. Transferred to the Naval Sta ti on at Treasure Island, he worked temporarily in the section granting di sch arges and he and Fran lived in an apartment on Valencia Street in t he Miss ion district of San Francisco. Marshall received his Honorable Di schar ge from the U.S. Navy on 18th August 1976 and, as they had been havi ng pro blems, he and Fran separated -- they amicably divorced on 9 M ay 2 1977.In August of 1976 Marshall drove to Idaho to visit with Dr. CLA RK at his h ome, and his mother joined them for a short visit. After return ing to San Francisco in September Marshall embarked on an ill- fated mo ve to live with a friend in a mobile home in rural Florence, Orego n, a re location which ended up involving a drive to Wisconsin -- seeing M t. Rush more, etc. along the way. Giving up the Oregon move as a fiasco, M arsha ll settled at Dr. CLARK's ranch (he had retired) in Swan Valley alo ng t he Snake River in the southeastern Idaho hamlet ofIrwin. There Marsha ll s pent some very idyllyc months hunting, fishing, skiing and worki ng on t he ever-expanding house. It was at this time that he began researc hing t he family histories, and he took a job as assistant manager at the A VCO F inancial Services office in Idaho Falls, a 50-mile daily commute whi ch w as less than fun through the snow in winter. He also served as chai rm an of the Democratic Party of Bonneville County, Idaho, which includ ed Ida ho Falls, from July of 1977.Marshall remained at Irwin until at lea st the spring of 1978. Tiring of t he rural life (and a city boy at heart ), he moved to Denver, Colorado, whe re he took an apartment on Capitol Hi ll and was assistant manager of the A VCO office in Arvada. When he was o ffered more money (and a location clos er to his apartment) by a rival fin ance company, The Associates, he went o ver to their office in downtown De nver.On holiday during the summer of 1978 he went back to the ranch in Sw an Val ley, and he and Dr. CLARK flew to Seattle for the "Treasures of Tut ankhamu n" show at the Seattle Art Museum, a highlight of the decade for M arshal l. In late summer that year he decided to move back to Los Angele s, rent ed a house in a rather rough Hispanic area of Los Angeles, held t he positi ons of assistant manager at AVCO offices in San Gabriel and Arca dia (fr om September of 1978) and in February 1979 Marshall took over t he managers hip of the new AVCO office in La CaF1ada. Neither the new j ob nor his acc ommodations were particularly to his liking, so in Janua ry of 1980 he to ok the position of Corporate Credit Manager and Shop Mana ger for Trost In c. t/a Ryan's Mens Shop and Jewelers in a large shoppi ng mall in Hawthorn e, California. He also took an apartment above a legi timate theater on Sa nta Monica Blvd. in Hollywood, which put where he lik ed to be: right in t he center of things. This was the time of proto-punk b ands in dirty little clubs, not to menti on the "invasion" of New Romant ic English bands to venues like the Whisky- a-Go-Go on Sunset Strip, and M arshall got involved with both at the same t ime! Hobnobbing with such mus icians as Ian McCOLLOCH of Echo & The Bunnyme n(whom he spirited out of o ne club, hunched down in the back seat of Marsha ll's car, to avoid fan-cr ush), Siouxsie (of The Banshees), partying at t he Veil Club -- a heady pe riod, the late 1970s!!Although both his working and living arrangements we re well suited to hi m, Marshall soon found himself looking for new pastur es to conquor. In t he autumn of 1981 he decided to move to London -- like ly in part becau se of all the English music contacts he had made in Los A ngeles, whi ch he did just after Christmas of that year. Finding it diffi cult to g et a job, Marshall finally landed a thankfully temporary positi on selli ng wall-to-wall carpeting in-store for Allied Carpets, the large st floor f urnishings chain in the United Kingdom. Working by day, and co ntinuing h is hectic nightlife in the London clubs featuring live bands ( as he h ad in Los Angeles), he searched for a more rewarding job.In Mar ch of 1982 he signed on in a temporary accounting position with Brem ar Ba nk, a private bank which was trying (against all odds) to sort out t he bo oks of an insurance company it was attempting to sell. Not an interesting j ob, simply number-crunching,but it filled spaces in t he pocketbook. T he team managed to put the company in saleable conditio n, and then disban ded.Marshall was kept with Bremar, but was seconded to Proteus Books, a pu blis her of books about music bands, as the company's Financial Control le r. At this point Marshall had become involved with a band called Joy Di vis ion/New Order, and proceeded (with the reluctant but good-natured co-o pera tion of the band) to write the first book about them -- which was pub lish ed in 1984 by Proteus, and was still selling nicely in 1996! Movi ng o ut of his tiny flat in Caledonian Road, Marshall first purchased a ba seme nt flat in Maida Vale, sold that when the housing market hit a high p oin t, and relocated to St.John's Wood -- just around the corner from t he famo us Abbey Road Studios.About this time Marshall became increasing ly involved with what remain ed of the Mod "revival", a style and music cu lt harkening back to Lond on of the 1960s which had had a re-birth in t he late 1970s. Scooters (Vesp as and Lambrettas only, thank you), fine tai lored clothes, and classic rhy thm'n blues were and are the Mods (short f or"Modernists") primary icon s, and at least six rallies are held at seasi de resorts each year. Organi zation of these rallies (including dances a nd best scooter competitions) w as by The Phoenix Society, which Marsha ll helped found.Under the auspices of The Phoenix Society, Marshall co-ord inated and organ ized the 1985 recording of "All or Nothing", a 12-inch re cord for the bene fit of both the BANDAID appeal to help those starvi ng in the Ethiopian dro ught and the ARMS multiple sclerosis charity s et up by Ronnie LANE (Sma ll Faces/Faces; six Top 10 songs, 1966-68 /thr ee Top Ten, 1971-3). Its pa rticipants were a veritable "who's who" of t he English Mod scene past a nd present. The studio was lent without char ge by Pete TOWNSEND (The Wh o; twelve Top 10 songs, 1965-81),the song w as arranged by Jez BIRD (The La mbrettas; one Top 10 song, 1980), Paul BUL TITUDE (Secret Affair; two T op 20 songs, 1979-80), and Marshall and was p roduced by Kenny LYNCH (two T op 10 songs, 1962-63). The soloists, one ea ch for each verse (and new vers es were written because the original so ng was quite short), were Steve MAR RIOTT (Small Faces/Humble Pie; six T op 10 songs, 1966-68 / one Top Ten, 19 69), P.P. ARNOLD (one Top 20 son g, 1967), Chris FARLOWE (one Number 1 a nd six Top 50 songs, 1966-67), Br yn GREGORY (The Co-Stars), Martin BURT ON (The Gents) and Eleanor RIGBY. T he youth chorus was provided by three m embers of the youngest (aged 13 a nd 14) band on the Mod scene at the tim e, XL (one of its members,Tony LAW RENCE, later became involved in the animal-rights movement and tri ed to b urn down a butcher's shop). The single, released in both 12" a nd 7" vers ions under the band name Spectrum, was issued through the courte sy of Sti ff Records, the major independent label in England at that tim e. Althou gh it did not enter the U.K. Top 100, the video made for the sing le (whi ch was filmed during the recording sessions and edited by Marsha ll wi th a lot of help from Virgin Records video department) was aired on p rime -time national television. Also in aid of BANDAID and ARMS was The Mod Live -Aid Alldayer which Marsha ll organized at the Walthamstow Civic Ha ll on 15 DEC 1985. Featuring the s eventeen top Mod bands of the day and c ompered by Rick BUCKLER of The J am and Ed BALL of The Times, the event be gan at eleven in the morning a nd went until 10:30 that evening, culminati ng with a massive jam sessi on of the Spectrum version of "All or Nothing ". Fourteen of the bands shar ed three sides of a double album in gatefo ld sleeve entitled Dedicated whi le the fourth side was devoted to the Spe ctrum Jam. As with the Spectrum s ingle, the Dedicated album was releas ed on the Phoenix label of The Phoen ix Society. Likeing to be busy, Mars hall edited and published The Phoen ix List, a weekly newsletter for the M od community which produced well ov er 300 editions between 1985 and 1990. Inspired by the relative success of the Phoenix label single and doub le al bum releases, and the fact that Proteus Books had gone bankrupt in 1 986 ( on the heels of its parent company, Bremar Bank!), Marshall decid ed to sta rt his own record label. There was a gap in the music mark et at that ti me as the young Mod/indie bands were not being support ed by any of the cur rent record labels in the U.K., and their songs we re not being recorded. T he initial release on the Unicorn label ca me on 16 JUN 1986 as PHZ-1, t he first release of the Unicorn label, a cov er version by Ed BALL (of T he Times) of David BOWIE's 1964 classic song a bout Mods, "The London Boys ". Strongly influenced by the atmosphere gene rated by BOWIE's then curre nt film "Absolute Beginners",the single ran t he gamut of Sixties musical styles from jazz and ska to so ul with a backg round of sound effects gathered one rainy evening in a wa lk through Londo n's Soho district.By the end of 1995 Unicorn had released six 7-inch singl es, four 7-inch EP s, four 12-inch singles, 58 albums and mini-albums, t wo double albums, six teen CDs, two cassettes and an hour-long profession al video of Laurel AITK EN live. The styles represented on the Unicorn lab el included classic Sixties Jamai can ska, up-tempo blues & soul, power po p, and guitar pop. Although Unico rn released its first CD in early 198 9, it did not begin to shift its prod uction to all-CD until 1991 wh en it started to issue its most popular cata logue albums in the CD forma t. The associated reggae label, L.A. Records ( named for Jamaican singer L aurel AITKEN), released one 12-inch, nine albu ms and mini-albums, and thr ee compact disks.Over Christmas 1990, Marshall had taken a 10-day cheap-an d-easy package ho liday to Istanbul (Constantinople), one of the great cit ies of antiquit y, and had become fascinated with its amazing blend of anc ient and moder n, Christianity and Islam. Again it seemed like a good ti me to make a mov e, as the music business had leveled off with little n ew and interesti ng to him. Unicorn had a very good back catalogue, a nd it seemed prude nt to concentrate on what already existed and begin t he shift over to comp act disks. Thus, after a couple of months of plannin g, in March 1991 moved to Istanbu l. During that summer he took a cour se which led to him receiving his Cer tificate in Teaching English as a Fo reign Language (EFL) in August, a nd he taught at AR-EL LISESI (high schoo l) in Istanbul. In his "spare time" Marshall set up Unicorn Publishing wi th the assistan ce of his then-girlfriend BetFCl Sevgi GD6KGD6Z and her br other Alper. Th ey published seven issues of Hello Istanbul, a free bi-mo nthly tabloid eve nts guide for tourists written in English, French and Ge rman beginni ng in January 1992 -- an effort which managed to lose over 70 00 pounds ($1 0,000) due to the Turkish business community's inabili ty to understand t he advantages of advertising to the tourists.Ever on t he move, it seems, on 1 NOV 1992 Marshall headed for Bangkok, Tha iland, w ith the idea of teaching English there as well. Although he fou nd the Tha is a very personable people and the country beautiful, the air p olluti on and humidity in Bangkok were intolerable.Despite getting a position wi th Berlitz International, and teaching privat ely as well, he was not at a ll happy in Bangkok. To further complicate h is life, on 28 JUN 1993 Mars hall was diagnosed as HIV-positive, which wou ld have a considerable affe ct on his life. While this did not affect his d ecision, he moved ba ck to Istanbul on 31 JUL 1993, where he taught Engli sh to private studen ts and served as the representative of Liverpool-bas ed World Leather maga zine in Turkey, Greece, the Balkans, the Near East a nd the Turkic Republi cs -- both as a journalist and in advertising sale s. Ill-health and a dra matic loss of weight (plus the less-than-wonderf ul medical services avail able in Istanbul) forced the next move on him, a nd on 22 APR 1995 Marsha ll returned to London, his gadding about days fair ly well finished.Marsha ll took a flat in the Turkish-Greek area of London known as Green La nes ( Harringay), and on 29 DEC 1995 he married BetFCl "Betty" GD6KGD6Z. S in ce his return to London, Marshall concentrated his energies on the compl e tion of his family history as well as Unicorn Records (which he h ad r un by fax while in Turkey and Thailand), and his health improved cons idera bly. In May of 1996, in order to present this book to his famil y, he to ok a holiday in the United States where he was reunited with h is sister a nd niece, both of which he had not seen for some fifteen year s, and the th ree of them took a 5-day holiday driving up into CT a nd NY to visit the N ew England towns of their ancestors.
