Descendants of Thomas BENNETT

Eleventh Generation

(Continued)

224. Benjamin BENNETT (James , James , Richard , Richard , Thomas , John , Thomas "of Clapcot" , John , Thomas , Thomas ).

He had the following children:

+ 393 M i John BENNETT.

235. James MANGUM (William MANGUM , Frances Silvester BENNETT , Richard , Richard , Thomas , John , Thomas "of Clapcot" , John , Thomas , Thomas ) was born on Jun 2 1734 in Albermarle Parrish, Surry County, Virginia. He died on Sep 15 1757 in Orange County, Greenville, North Carolina.

-!See the Mangum Family Bulletin, Issue 15, page 16 for James Lynn Parham's
summary discussion of this James Mangum.

Editor Parham notes that James Mangum died at the age of 23, leaving a wife and
one unnamed son. Descendants of Jacob researching the Mangum line have
concluded without proof that James was the father of our Jacob.

Purchasers of his estate included
William, Arthur, and Samuel Mangham. No land dealings, he notes, have been
found concerning James Mangum (The Arthur, William, and Samuel, noted here,
may have been the sons of William Mangum and Mary Person.)

James Mangum, along with William Mangum, William Mangum Jr, and Samuel Mangum
were all listed as of 8 October 1754 on the Colonial Militia Muster Roll of
Granville Co, NC in Capt. Dan Harris' company.

James is called the "son of William" in the 1755 tax list.

James married Sarah (MANGUM) after 1747.

They had the following children:

+ 394 M i Jacob MANGUM was born about 1759 and died about 1835.

236. John MANGUM (William MANGUM , Frances Silvester BENNETT , Richard , Richard , Thomas , John , Thomas "of Clapcot" , John , Thomas , Thomas ) was born on May 5 1736 in Albermarle Parrish, Surry County, Virginia. He died after 1767.

John married Mary (MANGUM) after 1749.

They had the following children:

395 M i William MANGUM was born on Nov 12 1756 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia.
396 M ii Lucy MANGUM was born on Nov 30 1758 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia.
397 F iii Sarah MANGUM was born on Nov 6 1760 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia.
+ 398 M iv John MANGUM was born on Jan 19 1763 and died on Mar 3 1843.

237. William MANGUM (William MANGUM , Frances Silvester BENNETT , Richard , Richard , Thomas , John , Thomas "of Clapcot" , John , Thomas , Thomas ) was born on May 16 1736 in Albermarle Parrish, Surry County, Virginia. He died about 1818 in Morris Island, Argyle Township, Yarmouth County, Noa Scotia.

William Mangum, Jr was a Loyalist who fought with his son for the British.
See Issues 35 and 36 for the extensive information provided on William by
Thomas Hughes of Chevy Chase, Maryland. William Mangum, Jr, along with William
Mangum, James and Samuel Mangum were listed on the Muster Roll of Granville Co,
Capt Dan Harris' company on 8 October 1754, along with William Mangum, James
and Samuel Mangum.

Mr. Hughes notes that William, the son of William Mangum and Mary Person
lived for a time in every Southern Colony under the British flag, Virginia,
N Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, only to spend his last thirty
years as an erxile in Novia Scotia. He was a pioneer backwoodsman, Indian
fighter, frontier planter (450 Acres), slavehold, provisioner of the British
army, and soldier in the King's Rangerfs fighting under the most celebrzated
British commanders like Ferguson and Cruger. After the British defeat, he was
officially banished from Georgia and joined the exodus of Loyalist in (then
British) St. Augustine, 1782-85. Accompanied by two slaves, he settled in
Nova Scotia in 1785. There he remarried and raised a new family in harsh
circumstances on a small island off the west coast of the colony.

Mr. Hughes notes that William Mangum Jr family was the one and only Mangum
family
in Colonial Georgia before and during the Revolution. The others came after
the Revolution, quite soon after it.

William married (1) Elizabeth LADGO about 1760 in North Carolina?, GA?. Elizabeth was born about 1740 in Virginia. She died in Oct 1784 in Florida and was buried in Florida?.

Eliz. left the land owned by her husband following the Rev.War since
William and son Samuel Mangum fought for the British against the
Americans. I found a number of Persons in the same county that served
the British. He signed a loyalist petition in Oct. 1774. She did not flee
to Nova Scotia as did her husband. Presumably she died in Florida near her
two daughters.

William and Elizabeth had the following children:

399 M i Samuel MANGUM was born about 1762 in North Carolina?, GA?. He died on Nov 12 1780 in Augusta, GA.

See Mangum Family Bulletins 35 & 36 for information on Samuel and his family,
documenting that Samuel and his father, William, were Tories and loyal to the
King of England. Both fought in the Rev. War against the Americans. Samuel
served with the Kings Rangers, Muster with Capt Joseph Marshall's Co. The
official entry of the death of Samuel reads, "Kings Rangers, Muster. Capt.
Joseph Marshall's Co, King's Rangers, Augusta, Georgia, 24 April 1781. Samuel
Mangum, Private, killed 12 Nov. 1780. (Pac RG81 C Series, Vol 1898) His death
occured somewhere between Ebenezer where they were stationed and Augusta, near
the Mangum home.

The two issues of the Mangum Family Bulletin, noted above, give extensive
information on this Mangum family. The research was done by Thomas L. Huges,
56346 Western Avenue, Chevy Chase, Maryland 20815, phone 301-656-1420..
400 F ii Mary MANGUM was born in 1765 in Charleston?, South Carolina. She died in Glynn County, GA.

See Issues 35 and 36 of the Mangum Family Bulletins for information on Sarah
Mangum. Thomas Hughes in his articles on this family notes that it is
assumed that this family was in Florida by early 1783 and resided in St.
Augustine and St. John's Bluff, a refugee settlement on the St. Johns's River
some miles from St. Augstine. A census of the refugees on Oct 20, 1784 shows
the William Mangums family as follows: "Mangum, Guillermo, American Planter
going to Louisiana, lives on St. John's River, Family of 4, 4 slaves, 5
horses."

Sarah was re-baptized a Catholic in St. Auigustine, Nobv 4, 1786, at age 18.
This was necessary under Spanish Law if she wished to remain in Florida. She
changed her name at that time to Maria Isabel (Mary Elizabeth) and a month
later she married Juan Jorge (John George) Hinsman. The Hinsman had three
children born in St. Augustisne, 1787-1792 Mary Mangum, her sister, m John
Piles between October, 1784 and their return to Georgia
in 1785. John became a wealthy landowner, prominent local official in Flynn
County land State Representative. He died in 1803. Mary died in 1850. They
had five sons and many descendants.

The Spanish Census of 1783 in St. Augustine shows Sarah Piles, widow and
two sons. The older son was a butcher. The younger son, John, was a planter.
John Piles was still in St. Augustine in late December 1784. He obtained a
headright grant of 200 acres on the Turtle Ribver, Glynn Co, GA on July 20,
1785, perhaps an inheritance of his father.
        Mary married PILES.
401 F iii Sarah MANGUM was born about 1768. She died in Florida.

Sarah was baptised a Catholic in St. Augustine, Nov 4, 1786, age 18
(compulsory under Spanish rule). She changed her name at that time to Maria
Isabel (Mary Elizabeth) Mangum, and a month later married Juan Jorge (John
George) Hinsman (Heintsman, Hindsman); he came from a family originally of
German extraction via Pennsylvania and Maryland, one of seven children, about
whom there is considerable information. Maria Isabel Mangum and Juan Jorge
Hinsman had three children born in St. Augustine 1787-1792. Hindsman died and
Maria Isabel married 2nd: Antonio Poncell. They had a son born in 1799 land
probably other children. There may well be descendants of both Hinsman and
Poncell families.
        Sarah married HINSMAN.

William also married (2) (MANGUM) about 1790 in Nova Scotia.

They had the following children:

402 F iv Sarah MANGUM was born in 1791/1795 in Nova Scotia. She died in Nova Scotia?.

Sarah m James Gray in 1811, according to Thomas L. Hughes of Chevy Chase,
MD, in a letter to me dated 24 Feb 1986. No further information.
        Sarah married GRAY.
403 F v Mary MANGUM was born in 1795/1799 in Nova Scotia.

m Jesse Gray, Jr in 1817, Nova Scotia
404 M vi John MANGUM was born about 1800 in Nova Scotia.

still single in 1819, according to Thomas Hughes in letter to me.
+ 405 M vii Solomon MANGUM was born about 1800.

239. Arthur M. MANGUM (William MANGUM , Frances Silvester BENNETT , Richard , Richard , Thomas , John , Thomas "of Clapcot" , John , Thomas , Thomas ) was born on May 22 1741 in Albermarle Parrish, Surry County, Virginia. He died in Mar 1789 in Dials Creek, Orange County, Greenville, North Carolina.

Source: MFB, Issue 28, p 9
Arthur sold 320 acres of land in Orange Co, NC, on Dyals Creek on 2 May 1763 to
James Horton. In 1779 a plot of 550 acres of land on Dyals creek was surveyed
for Arthur Mangum. In 1784 a grant of 186 acres of land was made to Arthur
Mangum from the state of NC. In 1789 a grant of 253 acres of land was made to
Arthur Mangum. Arthur sold land to his son, William Person Mangum, but seems
to have died before executing the deed.

Arthur Mangum's children, three sons: William, Wiley, and Arthur; four
daughters: Sally, Clarey, Chaney, and Holly, along with his wife Lucy are all
named in his will, filed in Orange Co, NC, Wills, Will Book 6, p 100.

There is considerable confusion over the death date for Arthur Mangum, Sr. who
m Lucy Person. His will was dated 24 Nov 1789, and no probate has been found.
Arthur bought land 11 Nov 1790. The 1800 Census of Orange Co does not list
Arthur, but does have Lucy Mangum as head of household. The petition filed by
the children and widow of Arthur asking that his estate be distributed notes
that Arthur died in March 1788 and in 1789. The petition asked that his
estate be distributed at the November Term, 1795. In the August Term, 1790,
John Carrington had been appointed as the Administrator of Arthur's estate.

The children of Arthur Mangum, Sr and Lucy Person filed a petition in Orange
Co, NC, for the November Term, 1795, asking that Arthur Sr's estate be
distributed. Named in the petition were Lucy Mangum, widow and 7 children:
William, Sarah, Hawley, Claramond, Chaney, Arthur, and Wilie.
The reported facts conflict in that Durrell is added as a child under 21 in a
second petition.)

Arthur came to the area known as the Flat River area, and portions of the land
owned by Athur remained in the family until about 1902. A good portion of
Arthur's estate was willed to Chaney Mangum.

In his will, recorded in Will Book B, page 100 of Orange Co, NC, Arthur left
400 acres to his wife, Lucy for the remainder of her life and one Negroe named
Peg and child, one negroe fellow named Justic, one Negro named Judy and her
increase. To his son William Mangum he left 200 acres of land adjoining Sikon
Bobett's line and John Mize line. To Sally Bobbitt five head of Hoggs; to
daughtger Holley one hundred Acres of land adjoining John Mizes; and James
Bobbetts line. To Clarey one hundred acres of land adjoining Holley's land,
and to daugvhgter Chaney one hundred and fifty acres of land adjoining
Clannesses land and James Bobbits line and one negroe boy named Jack, also two
cows and calves and ten pounds specie, also one sow and Piggs. To son Artghur
Mangum he lkeft two cows and calves and two sowes, to William Mangum tgen
pounds. He appointed John Carrington and William Mangum, Jr. executors of his
estate.

Henry, Jr witnessed a deed to his father which had a date of 1760, when he was
only 11 years old. (See also Issue 36, MFB which notes that Henry, Jr. was a
soldier in the Rev. War, a 2nd Lt. from Virgia.)

See Issue 36, MFB, p 7, for information on Henry Mangum, Jr. This articles
notes that it has long been assumed that Littleberry Mangum was a son of Henry
Mangum, Jr. Editor Parham notes in this article that recent information
confirms that Littleberry was the son of Britain Mangum, a brother to Henry,
Jr. Apparently Henry Jr. took in all or some of Britain's children when he
died in 1782 in Virginia, thus leading to the wrong conclusion about
Littleberry.

Henry Mangum, Jr apparently moved to Brunswick County and obtained land in that
county as early as 1778. He had moved to Brunswick County before this since he
obtained land in that county too. He was married to Sarah, last name unknown,
whose name appears on several of the Brunswick Co deeds. By 1788 he was in
Greensville Co. He may have lived in that part of the county which was cut
off from Brunswick. Sarah, his wife, signed several deeds in Greenville Co.
All of these were with an "X." They had at least three children: Charity who m
Miles Turner in 1794, Isham who m Patsy Allen in 1800, and Henry Mangum, Jr
(III) who married Nancy Harrison in 1801. A deed record in 1800 mentions a
Sterling Mangum with Henry and Isham Mangum.

Henry married Sarah WREN in Virginia. Sarah was born about 1750 in Virginia.

They had the following children:

440 F i Charity MANGUM was born in 1773 in Brunswick County, Virginia.
        Charity married TURNER.
